The YORK Series P 18 SEER | 30000 BTU Wall-Mounted Heat Pump belongs to a very different category from the small 9,000- or 12,000-BTU wall-mounted heat pumps frequently installed in a bedroom, office, or small condo. With the DHP30NWB21S indoors and DHP30CSB21S outdoors combination, we are looking at a unit designed to handle a significantly larger thermal load: a large open living room, an open-plan floor, a moderately sized commercial space, a common area, or a residential space where a smaller wall-mounted unit would quickly fall short in airflow.
YORK precisely identifies this combination as a Series P wall-mounted heat pump, in the 30K class, powered by 208/230 V.
At AirGreen, we are particularly interested in this type of unit because a high-capacity wall-mounted system must be selected more carefully than through a simple floor-area calculation. In Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore and South Shore, differences in insulation, windows, solar exposure, ceiling height, and room layout can completely change how a heat pump of this size performs.
The “30,000 BTU” rating deserves a technical explanation
The commercial name indicates 30,000 BTU, but YORK documentation from this generation provides an important clarification.
For the DHP30CSB21S model, the brochure states:
- nominal cooling capacity: 28,000 BTU/h;
- cooling modulation range: 9,485 to 30,025 BTU/h;
- nominal heating capacity: 28,400 BTU/h;
- heating modulation range: 9,997 to 32,994 BTU/h;
- efficiency: 18 SEER, 9 HSPF, and 10.35 EER;
- power supply: 208/230 V, single-phase, 60 Hz;
- MCA: 20 A;
- maximum overcurrent protection: 30 A.
There is nothing unusual about this difference between the commercial “30,000 BTU” class and a nominal capacity of 28,000 BTU/h. The figure in the product name represents the capacity category, while the performance table shows what the unit delivers under standardized test conditions and how far its variable-speed compressor can modulate.
For a homeowner, this means it is better not to compare two heat pumps solely based on the number in their name. The minimum, nominal, and maximum capacity give us a much more useful picture of their actual behavior.
An inverter compressor that modulates rather than operating only in on-off mode
The P Series uses inverter compressor technology. This principle is important for comfort: the heat pump can reduce or increase its output according to the building’s load instead of operating at full capacity all the time.
This modulation is particularly relevant for a unit of this size. A high-capacity heat pump that could not reduce its output sufficiently might cycle on and off repeatedly during milder days.
Here, the published range starts at approximately 9,485 BTU/h in cooling, allowing the system to significantly reduce its output when demand decreases. In heating mode, modulation drops to approximately 9,997 BTU/h.
For us, this information is almost as important as the maximum capacity when we evaluate an HVAC installation.
SEER 18: Be careful not to confuse SEER with SEER2
This generation of the YORK P Series was documented according to the older SEER, EER, and HSPF measurements. The YORK brochure lists 18 SEER, 10.35 EER, and 9 HSPF for this combination.
Therefore, “18 SEER” should not automatically be converted to “18 SEER2.” They are two different standards.
This distinction is important when a homeowner compares this YORK unit with a newer heat pump that directly displays SEER2, EER2, and HSPF2 values. A professional comparison must consider the standard used, not just the number.
Airflow: up to 706 CFM to move air through a large space
A 30,000 BTU heat pump must also be able to distribute its heating or cooling efficiently.
The DHP30NWB21S indoor unit offers four airflow levels listed at:
706 / 618 / 530 / 412 CFM.
Its sound pressure level varies accordingly between 51 / 45 / 41 / 37 dB(A). The published dimensions of the indoor unit are 53 × 13 × 10 in.
The 53-inch width is worth considering from the estimate visit onward. This unit is significantly longer than a low-capacity wall-mounted heat pump.
We must therefore check not only the available wall surface, but also:
the distance from the ceiling, windows, doors, cabinets, airflow path, and the location that allows the piping and drain to be routed.
Poor positioning can considerably reduce comfort quality, even when the unit's capacity is theoretically sufficient.
Automatic vertical and horizontal louvers
The AirGreen specification identifies control of the vertical and horizontal louvers as automatic.
With a unit delivering up to 706 CFM, airflow direction becomes particularly important. In a large open living room, for example, we generally prefer a position that allows the airflow to travel through the room without being immediately blocked by a beam, a tall piece of furniture, or a cross wall.
In cooling mode, proper airflow distribution promotes more even distribution of cool air. In heating mode, it helps direct the air to limit heat buildup near the ceiling.
YORK documentation also confirms that compatible controllers allow management of the louver position.
A larger outdoor unit than a standard wall-mounted heat pump
The DHP30CSB21S outdoor unit measures approximately 39 × 31 × 17 in and has a published sound pressure level of 62 dB(A).
For a project in Montreal or Longueuil, this can directly affect the selected location when the property has a narrow side passage or neighboring homes are close together.
On the South Shore or North Shore, we often encounter more placement options on the property, but the position remains important for airflow, winter drainage, and future access for HVAC maintenance.
An outdoor unit should not be installed simply where the refrigerant line run is shortest. We also assess its clearance, accessibility, potential snow accumulation, and noise impact on living areas.
Heating down to -20°C according to the range published by YORK
The brochure indicates a heating operating range of -20 °C to 24 °C for the DHP30CSB21S. The published cooling range is -18 °C to 46 °C.
This is particularly important information for Quebec.
However, a minimum operating temperature of -20 °C does not mean that the heat pump produces its full rated capacity at -20 °C. The available capacity of a heat pump varies with outdoor temperature.
The brochure provided does not publish, for this specific model, a detailed table showing its capacity at -8 °C, -15 °C, and -20 °C. We therefore avoid inventing these values.
For a project where the heat pump must handle a significant portion of the heating load during the coldest periods of the Montreal winter, this distinction must be part of the sizing process.
Installing a YORK P Series 30K in Greater Montreal: the details that really make a difference
1/4 in – 5/8 in refrigeration piping
The 30K model uses a liquid line of 1/4 po and a gas line of 5/8 po.
The documentation also specifies:
maximum total length: 98.5 ft (30 m)
maximum elevation difference: 33 ft (10 m)
drain: 5/8 in.
These values become very useful in duplexes, multi-story homes, and commercial premises where the outdoor unit is not located directly behind the wall-mounted head.
At AirGreen, we prefer to plan the route before work begins. This avoids an improvised path that would multiply bends, unnecessarily expose the piping, or create difficulties for condensate drainage.
Why the drain should never be treated as a secondary detail
When a heat pump operates in cooling or dehumidification mode, the indoor unit produces condensation water.
The drain must therefore maintain an adequate slope when operating by gravity. When the building configuration does not allow this, a pumping solution may become necessary.
A 30,000 BTU unit can handle a significant volume of air. We therefore pay particular attention to drainage to prevent backflow, leaks on the wall, or water accumulation in the unit.
The YORK brochure also specifies a drain connection diameter of 5/8 po for this wall-mounted series.
Electrical circuit: 20 A MCA and maximum 30 A protection
The electrical installation should not be determined solely based on the 30,000 BTU rating.
For the DHP30 model, YORK publishes:
MCA: 20 A
MOCP: 30 A
Voltage: 208/230 V, 1 phase, 60 Hz.
The wiring gauge, protection, and power-supply compliance must be validated according to the applicable electrical requirements and the actual installation characteristics.
For us, this verification is part of normal job preparation, particularly in older properties in Montreal, Laval, and Longueuil, where the electrical panel and existing circuits may impose certain constraints.
Wi-Fi available as an option
The YORK P Series from this generation does not necessarily have Wi-Fi built directly into the unit.
The brochure identifies the CS532AH adapter as required for the P Series Wi-Fi function.
Remote control can then be carried out using the EWPE Smart App, announced by YORK for the P, X, and Z series. The documentation again specifies that the P and X series require the CS532AH adapter.
The DRCPX wireless remote, on the other hand, is included as standard with the P and X units.
This distinction avoids an unpleasant surprise: an included wireless remote does not mean built-in Wi-Fi.
R-410A: an important factor to know for future maintenance
The DHP30CSB21S uses R-410A.
This is therefore an earlier generation than the newer units that use refrigerants such as R-32 or R-454B.
For the homeowner, this does not prevent normal use of the system. It mainly means that it is useful to know the exact model and refrigerant during a future service call, HVAC maintenance visit, or refrigeration-system diagnosis.

ENERGY STAR, cold climate, and subsidies: do not assume eligibility
The specification sheet currently provided by AirGreen identifies this product as:

Therefore, we avoid presenting this YORK P Series as automatically eligible for a subsidy. Program criteria change, and eligibility must be verified based on the model, AHRI combination, and requirements in effect at the time of the project.
The AHRI identifier listed on the AirGreen specification sheet is 8578553.
For a customer whose main priority is maximizing current financial assistance, we can also compare this unit with newer models before finalizing the selection.
A warranty that depends in part on registration
The AirGreen specification sheet indicates a warranty of 10 years on the compressor, 10 years on parts, and 0 years on labour, with the possibility of an additional warranty.
The YORK brochure for this generation provides useful context: the published standard coverage was 7 years on the compressor and 5 years on parts, while residential registration made it possible to extend this to 10 years on the compressor and 10 years on parts. Ten years of labour coverage was also presented as an additional option.
That is why registering equipment after installation is not a formality to be overlooked.
For which projects is this 30K particularly relevant?
We primarily consider this capacity when the space has a real load justifying a large wall-mounted unit: large open area, higher ceiling, extensive fenestration, commercial space, entire floor, or space where several smaller zones are broadly connected.
Conversely, a heat pump of this size is not automatically the best solution for a house simply because its total area seems large.
A wall-mounted indoor unit primarily heats and cools the space that its airflow can actually reach. Closed bedrooms at the end of a hallway will not necessarily receive the same comfort as the living room where the unit is located.
This is one of the selection errors we want to avoid: compensating for poor air distribution with excessive capacity.
In some buildings, a 30K wall-mounted heat pump makes perfect sense. In others, two smaller zones, a multi-zone system, or a central system may provide much more even distribution.
What we check before recommending the DHP30CSB21S
During an assessment, we therefore do not limit ourselves to the number of BTUs. We examine the geometry of the space, air circulation, insulation, fenestration, floors, the indoor unit’s position, the length of the refrigerant line, the drain slope, the outdoor unit’s location, and the electrical characteristics.
This method is particularly important with the YORK P Series 30,000 BTU, because a properly sized unit can provide excellent comfort, whereas an oversized or poorly positioned unit will deliver a much less convincing experience, even if the equipment itself operates perfectly.
YORK documentation also points out that its mini-split systems were designed for residential and light commercial applications where requirements vary according to load and occupancy.
2020 Documentation and Verification of the Model Actually Delivered
The technical brochure used for this P Series is a Johnson Controls/YORK publication dated November 2020.
For this reason, when selling or replacing equipment, we always verify that the model numbers of the equipment actually available match the applicable technical documentation.
This verification is particularly important for the dimensions, refrigerant, electrical specifications, Wi-Fi accessories, and warranty.
