For an open-concept area in Montreal, a floor in Laval, or a living space on the South Shore, we look for more than a unit capable of producing cool air. We assess airflow between rooms, noise near occupants, heating needs, and the outdoor unit’s location. These factors determine the suitability of a 12,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump far more reliably than an approximate match between floor area and capacity.
At AirGreen, we evaluate the YORK Z Series based on its exact combination: the outdoor unit DHZ12CSB21S and the indoor unit DHZ12NWB21S. This single-zone system combines a variable-speed compressor, Wi-Fi control, and motorized louvers to adapt operation to the needs of the served zone. However, one clarification is necessary from the outset: the efficiency of this combination is not identical to the maximum figure presented in the range’s name.
Z Series 28 SEER: the 12,000 BTU combination is rated at 23 SEER
The name “Z Series 28 SEER” refers to a range whose configurations can reach 28 SEER. For the DHZ12NWB21S / DHZ12CSB21S system, YORK instead indicates an efficiency rating of 23 SEER. The 9,000 BTU system in this same series is presented as 28 SEER in the manufacturer’s sales catalog. We therefore distinguish the range’s trade name from the specifications of the selected unit.
The technical data sheet for this 12,000 BTU combination also specifies 12.7 EER and 10.5 HSPF. These values are published according to the former ratings; we do not present them as SEER2, EER2, or HSPF2 values, which correspond to a different evaluation method.
To illustrate the value of seasonal efficiency, consider a theoretical comparison between two systems rated under the same SEER protocol. With identical seasonal cooling requirements, going from 16 to 23 SEER corresponds, according to these ratings, to approximately 30% less electricity for air conditioning: the calculation is 1 − 16 ÷ 23. We use this example to explain the ratings, not to promise a 30% reduction in a residence’s total utility bill. Heating, usage habits, and building characteristics require a separate analysis.

These references are also useful during HVAC maintenance, when looking for parts, or when checking the warranty. We recommend keeping the model and serial numbers of both units with the installation invoice.
Adjustable airflow to find the right balance between distribution and quiet operation
Our product sheet indicates indoor sound pressure ranging from 23 to 42 dB(A), depending on operating conditions and fan speed. We therefore do not present 23 dB(A) as the unit’s constant noise level. This minimum corresponds to quiet operation, while a higher airflow rate is accompanied by a more noticeable sound level.
For a home-office workstation near the unit, we will look for a setting that avoids directing the airflow toward the occupant. For a longer open area, we will instead assess the air reach and louver orientation. The vertical and horizontal automatic controls allow this distribution to be adjusted without changing the unit’s location.
The included Wi-Fi connectivity adds a control option, but we always distinguish between the presence of the module and its setup. During the handover, we verify the app compatible with the supplied module and the conditions for connecting to the home network.
Heating down to −30 °C: an operating limit, not a constant capacity
The −30 °C designation refers to the minimum outdoor operating temperature for heating announced by YORK. It does not mean that the unit automatically maintains its rated capacity of 13,000 BTU/h at that temperature. The summary sheet does not provide detailed capacities and performance coefficients at −8 °C, −15 °C, or −30 °C.
To size the heating system, we must bring together two pieces of information: the building’s heating needs in cold weather and the heat the unit can actually provide under those conditions. A stated minimum temperature does not replace this comparison.
We also assess the role of the existing heating system. In a home equipped with electric baseboards, our analysis must specify which rooms are served by the heat pump and which remain dependent on their local heating. We avoid recommending the removal of supplemental heating based solely on the “−30°C” rating.
A single wall-mounted unit does not create multiple independent zones
We pay particular attention to the interior layout before recommending a 12,000 BTU YORK wall-mounted heat pump.
Consider a planning scenario: a living room and dining room are largely connected, while two bedrooms open onto a corridor. We can consider a wall-mounted unit for the open space, but we would not promise identical temperatures in the bedrooms when their doors are closed. The issue to address would then be air distribution, not necessarily a lack of BTUs.
Our assessment includes insulation, windows, solar exposure, ceilings, and other heat sources. We already apply this approach in our documented residential projects in Montreal, where capacity and airflow are assessed together.
A YORK installation designed for the building, budget, and maintenance
Check the dimensions in the correct order
To prepare the location, we use the order width × depth × height. YORK diagrams indicate the following approximate dimensions:

The order of the dimensions deserves particular attention: the indoor unit is approximately 8 inches deep, not 13 inches. The cabinet dimensions do not include all the clearances required for installation.
We therefore check the available space above and on the sides, the panel opening required for maintenance, and the routing of the lines. We avoid selecting a location simply because the unit appears to fit between two décor elements. Final clearances must comply with the model’s installation instructions.
Plan the piping before definitively choosing the location
This combination uses a 1/4 in. liquid line and a 1/2 in. gas line. YORK publishes a maximum total piping length of 20 metres and a maximum height difference of 10 metres. These limits are used to verify route feasibility; they do not describe the lengths included in a quotation.
We examine the complete route rather than just the straight-line distance. An upper-floor installation may require an exterior drop, changes in direction, and routing around a balcony. For a replacement, we inspect the existing lines before proposing to reuse them.
We also plan the condensate drainage. The manual specifies routing that prevents the drain hose from rising. When the configuration does not allow for proper gravity drainage, we must consider another solution rather than concealing a problematic route behind a finish.
Understanding the electrical requirements: 13 A and 20 A do not mean the same thing
The nominal voltage published by YORK is 208/230 V, single-phase, 60 Hz. The other two important values are the minimum circuit ampacity of 13 A, or MCA, and the maximum overcurrent protection of 20 A, or MOP/MOCP.
We use the former for circuit sizing and the latter to comply with the protection limit specified by the manufacturer. They do not represent a measurement of the heat pump's continuous power consumption.
We have the wiring, power circuit, and protective devices verified according to the nameplate and the requirements applicable to the job site. The presence of an available circuit in the panel alone is not enough to confirm that it is suitable for this unit. The YORK manual expressly requires compliance with local electrical requirements.
An AirGreen project in Westmount illustrating the importance of proper support
In an AirGreen project documented in Westmount, we installed a Hitachi airHome 400 on a wooden balcony. The project required a guardrail-independent metal support, a compact routing path for the lines, and particular attention to vegetation, occupant access, and service access. It involved a different unit, but the building constraints were decisive.
From this type of project, we draw a practical design rule: the outdoor unit must be assessed in relation to its immediate surroundings. A chair, planter, or railing can change the space actually available after the work is complete.
For a YORK Z Series project, we revisit this analysis using the model's specific dimensions and requirements. We look for a location that also allows for future maintenance, rather than an installation designed solely to be compact on the day of delivery.
Commissioning is not limited to confirming that air is coming out
The Z Series manual specifically calls for leak checks, evacuation, and testing after installation. We incorporate these checks into the commissioning preparation, along with verifying drainage and connections.
We then provide occupants with guidance tailored to their needs: mode selection, fan-speed adjustment, louver direction, and filter access. Our goal is for them to understand daily operation, not merely receive the remote control.
We also recommend keeping a clear photograph of the nameplates. This precaution simplifies system identification when requesting service.
A quoted price that specifies the work and warranties
The price of this YORK wall-mounted heat pump is available upon request. We prepare the estimate based on the two units, the refrigerant line route, electrical work, outdoor support, drainage, and access conditions. A replacement with a straightforward route should not be compared without distinction to a high-level installation requiring new pathways.

LogisVert: do not include unconfirmed financial assistance in the budget
Our product sheet identifies this system as not ENERGY STAR® certified and not ENERGY STAR® certified for cold climates. We therefore do not present a subsidy as guaranteed for this model.
Hydro-Québec requires ENERGY STAR® certification for heat pumps installed on or after November 26, 2025 to be eligible for financial assistance under LogisVert. An attractive SEER rating or an AHRI number does not replace this requirement.
Before calculating a post-rebate cost, we verify the combination and installation date in the official tool, particularly using AHRI 8578589. When financial assistance is a priority, we compare the project cost with that of a solution whose eligibility has been confirmed.
Maintaining the system and providing the right information when there is a problem
We recommend ensuring easy access to the filters and following the maintenance instructions for the unit. The manual specifically reminds users not to operate the unit without its filters and to leave work on electrical components to qualified personnel.
To prepare a service call, we ask for useful information: the selected mode, the set temperature, the room concerned, and a photograph of the displayed code, if there is one. A description such as “air is circulating, but the room is not cooling” helps guide the assessment better than simply mentioning a breakdown.
We also recommend keeping the outdoor area clear and accessible. In our Westmount project, the proximity of vegetation and furniture clearly illustrated why using the balcony had to remain compatible with the equipment's needs after installation.
