An 18,000 BTU heat pump to choose based on the room, the desired heating, and installation conditions
For a living area in Montreal, a ground floor in Laval, or a residential space in Longueuil, we evaluate a wall-mounted heat pump based on three elements: the building's heating requirements, air circulation, and installation possibilities. At AirGreen, we incorporate these elements into our recommendation rather than automatically associating a capacity with a square footage. Our evaluation takes into account insulation, windows, room volume, and layout.
The 18,000 BTU YORK Z Series also deserves a close look at its specifications: the series name does not necessarily correspond to the efficiency of every capacity.
“28 SEER” Z Series: 21 SEER efficiency for this combination
The YORK Z Series is presented with efficiency of up to 28 SEER. However, for the combination consisting of the DHZ18NWB21S indoor unit and the DHZ18CSB21S outdoor unit, the manufacturer's technical sheet indicates 21 SEER, 12.5 EER, and 10.5 HSPF. We use these values specific to the 18,000 BTU model for comparisons.
These ratings are published under the designations SEER, EER, and HSPF, not SEER2, EER2, or HSPF2. We therefore retain their original designations: simply changing “SEER” to “SEER2” would present the documented data inaccurately.
The specifications of the YORK DHZ18CSB21S
The AHRI reference listed in our product sheet is 8578593. The system combines a wall-mounted indoor unit with an outdoor unit, without a distribution duct network.

This data helps prepare the system sizing, connections, and placement. Nominal capacities correspond to the manufacturer's test conditions and not to identical output at all outdoor temperatures.
Heating down to −30 °C: distinguishing operation from available capacity
The YORK specifications indicate a heating operating range down to −30 °C. This limit does not mean that the unit provides its rated capacity throughout the winter. To assess its contribution to heating, we must distinguish between the minimum operating temperature, the heat actually produced, and the building’s needs at that temperature.
We therefore do not present this heat pump as an automatic replacement for all existing heating equipment. Our recommendation must specify the rooms served, the conditions under which supplemental heat remains necessary, and the low-temperature heating data available for the selected pairing.
For a homeowner, the useful question to ask in a quote is concrete: what portion of the heating needs can this installation cover in the intended spaces? This analysis is more informative than a displayed minimum temperature alone.
Seven speeds and adjustable louvers to adapt air distribution
We have seven fan speeds and adjustable air direction along both the vertical and horizontal axes. The remote control offers several modes, including heating, cooling, ventilation, and dehumidification. These controls make it possible to adapt operation to room occupancy.
Our main goal is to avoid an uncomfortable setting: airflow directed continuously toward a seated occupant, for example, may be unsuitable even when the displayed temperature is appropriate. During commissioning, we prioritize a demonstration in the actual room: occupant locations, louver direction, and ventilation settings.
Floor area alone is not enough to confirm the right model
Our assessment of an 18,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump takes ceiling height, window area, insulation, and passageways between rooms into account. Two homes of the same size may have different needs; air distribution matters just as much as the advertised capacity.
Let’s take an illustrative scenario in Laval: a homeowner wants to treat the living room, dining room, and two bedrooms located at the end of a corridor. We would not consider these spaces to be a single open room. Before selecting this YORK, we would examine the openings, possible unit placement, and expectations for the bedrooms when their doors are closed.
Our recommendation might then apply only to the main area, with a precise explanation of the expected limitations. We prefer to define a realistic scope in the quote rather than imply that a wall-mounted unit will automatically provide uniform temperatures in every room.
Installation and maintenance of the YORK Z Series with AirGreen in Greater Montreal
Plan for the actual footprint and access to the unit
To prepare for integration, we are using the following approximate dimensions, presented in the order width × depth × height: 38 × 8 × 13 in for the indoor unit and 39 × 17 × 31 in for the outdoor unit. This order is important: depth must not be confused with height.
We then add the required clearances for airflow, connection, and maintenance. A visually discreet location is not necessarily suitable if it makes it difficult to open the panel or access the components. The installation manual also provides for selecting locations based on the surroundings and the impact on neighbours.
For your project, we propose confirming the indoor and outdoor locations before the work begins, along with the line routing and planned finishes.
Distinguish electrical requirements from consumption
The 19 A MCA and 30 A MOP ratings do not represent constant power consumption. They are used to define the circuit design and its protection. We have the conductors, disconnecting device, and connection confirmed based on the nameplate, applicable documentation, and actual site conditions. The manufacturer requires properly sized power supply and wiring.
This prevents us from reducing the assessment to whether there is clear space in the panel. In the quote, we would like the necessary electrical work to be identified before installation.
Take care with the refrigerant lines, drainage, and testing
This YORK uses 1/4 in and 5/8 in connections and R-410A. When replacing a system, we do not assume that the existing lines are suitable simply because they are already in place. Their compliance must be part of the connection assessment.
Drainage also deserves separate attention: the manual specifies a route that allows condensate to drain without improper upward routing of the pipe. It also specifies vacuuming, leak detection, and checks after installation. These operations are part of commissioning, beyond simply starting the appliance.
For your HVAC installation, we suggest having the proposal specify the routing of the lines, the drainage solution, the supports, and the finishing work. This description makes quotes easier to compare.
Two AirGreen projects that illustrate the importance of location
In Ville Mont-Royal, our published project concerns an 18,000 BTU SHARP ZU1, not this YORK. The indoor installation had to accommodate a low ceiling and a constraining architectural angle. We adapted the positioning while respecting the clearances, then installed the outdoor unit on an anti-vibration base. This project illustrates the importance of validating the available space before permanently determining the location.
In Boucherville, another documented installation of an 18,000 BTU SHARP ZU1 presented a different challenge: the unit had to be installed on a wall that already contained an intercom and switches. We integrated the appliance without disrupting this equipment. The desired result was therefore not limited to heating and cooling; we also had to preserve the wall’s everyday use.
These examples involve other appliances, but they show the types of constraints we want to address when preparing a YORK project: access, clearances, existing equipment, and integration into the room.
Maintaining the filters and recognizing signs that require service
We recommend keeping the filters clean and following the appliance’s maintenance instructions. The service manual notes that dust buildup and airflow problems can contribute to malfunctions. A decrease in comfort therefore warrants checking the settings and the condition of the unit before concluding that there is insufficient capacity.
To prepare for an AirGreen service call, we suggest noting the mode used, the requested temperature, the observed behavior, and any displayed code. A photo of the display and rating plates can also help identify the equipment involved precisely.
We reserve work on the refrigeration circuit and electrical components for qualified personnel. The manual specifically notes the presence of components that may retain a dangerous voltage after the power has been disconnected.
10-10-0 warranty: understanding the coverage shown
Our information sheet lists a 10-10-0 warranty, meaning 10 years for the compressor, 10 years for parts, and no years of labor included under this designation.
The YORK catalog for this generation distinguishes a basic warranty from enhanced ten-year residential coverage after registration. It also presents labor protection that can be purchased separately. We therefore specify in the offer the conditions applicable to the system sold, the registration requirements, and any additional protection selected.
Before comparing two offers, we recommend requesting a written response regarding parts, labor, and travel expenses. A warranty duration, without its scope, does not reveal all possible costs.
Installed price and LogisVert: establish the budget without assuming a rebate
To compare installation costs, we suggest separating the equipment from site-specific factors: route length, supports, high-access work, electrical connection, drainage, and finishing. A detailed offer makes it clear what is included and what depends on the selected configuration.
Regarding LogisVert, Hydro-Québec requires ENERGY STAR® certification for heat pumps installed on or after November 26, 2025. Eligibility must be verified for the complete system and according to the program conditions applicable to the installation.
Our information sheet indicates ENERGY STAR®: no for this YORK. Based on this, we therefore do not anticipate a LogisVert rebate in its budget. Operation advertised down to −30 °C does not, on its own, constitute proof of eligibility. We do not deduct any financial assistance without documentary validation of the model and its certification.
