The 9,000 BTU YORK Z Series wall-mounted heat pump combines a variable-speed compressor, included WiFi control, and several fan settings in a single-zone system. It pairs the DHZ09CSB21S outdoor unit with the DHZ09NWB21S indoor unit: a combination designed to heat and cool a defined area without a duct network.

At AirGreen, we approach its installation in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore, and on the South Shore by starting with a practical question: which space actually needs to become more comfortable? An open living room, an enclosed bedroom, and a divided-level floor do not require the same approach. We therefore clarify the intended rooms, usage habits, and building constraints before recommending this capacity.

A rating of 28 SEER, not to be confused with SEER2

The documentation for this combination clearly lists 28 SEER, 15 EER, and 10.5 HSPF. We do not convert these values to SEER2, EER2, or HSPF2: these new designations correspond to revised testing methods. Directly comparing a unit rated at 28 SEER with a unit rated at 28 SEER2 is therefore not an equivalent comparison.

SEER describes efficiency over a standardized cooling season. EER instead describes efficiency under specific conditions. HSPF concerns the heating season. These ratings make it possible to compare equipment evaluated using the same method, but they do not, on their own, predict a residence's energy bill.

In a quotation, we therefore recommend comparing three elements separately: documented efficiency, capacity suited to the home, and the cost of the necessary work. A good seasonal efficiency rating does not replace proper sizing or careful installation.

A capacity of 9,000 BTU does not correspond to a universal floor area

We do not recommend a 9,000 BTU heat pump solely because a room has a certain number of square feet. The calculation must take into account windows, insulation, solar exposure, ceiling height, and heat losses or gains. Natural Resources Canada specifically recommends assessing heating and cooling loads to select equipment.

For example, imagine two spaces of identical size: the first has large windows exposed to the sun; the second is better protected and located between two heated dwellings. We would not automatically assign them the same unit without examining these differences.

We also assess the airflow path. For a project intended to serve a main room and several bedrooms that are usually closed, we ask that the goal be specified room by room. This approach avoids presenting a single wall-mounted unit as a guaranteed solution for every room in a home, regardless of its layout.

Heating down to −30 °C: an operating range, not a promise of constant capacity

The −30 °C temperature announced for this model represents a heating operating limit. It does not mean that the unit provides its nominal capacity of 9,000 BTU/h under all outdoor conditions. The catalog also specifies that nominal heating capacities are established under test conditions different from extreme cold.

We therefore distinguish three pieces of information: the temperature at which the unit can operate, the amount of heat it provides at that temperature, and the electricity required to produce it. Without precise capacity and efficiency data at a given temperature, we do not present a numerical result as established fact.

For a residence in Laval, Longueuil, or the North Shore, we also assess the existing heating system. A backup system may still be necessary when the building's needs exceed the heat supplied by the heat pump. Its presence and use must be part of the initial choice, rather than improvised after installation.

Useful settings for adapting air distribution

The Z Series has seven fan speeds, a remote control, and standard WiFi connectivity. The louvers allow the airflow direction to be adjusted, providing more options for adapting operation to the unit's location.

The stated indoor airflow ranges from 206 to 412 cubic feet per minute, depending on the speed. Similarly, indoor sound pressure ranges from 22 to 41 dB(A): the minimum value does not represent all operating modes.

When presenting the settings, we prioritize a demonstration in the room: airflow direction, selected speed, and occupant position. For a bedroom or office, we particularly aim to avoid airflow directed straight toward the bed or workstation. The selected setting should correspond to the actual use of the space, not just the lowest sound level shown in a brochure.

The AirGreen installation: technical choices that matter after start-up

Allow the necessary space around both units

The dimensions must be read in the correct order. According to the technical drawings, the indoor unit measures approximately 37.8 × 8.0 × 12.6 inches, in width × depth × height. The outdoor unit measures approximately 35.4 × 14.9 × 23.5 inches, in the same order. These measurements describe the units themselves, without the necessary clearance spaces.

We therefore do not choose a location simply because the casing fits between two obstacles. Access for maintenance, required clearances, and airflow must remain possible. Outdoors, the support must also account for snow accumulation and site conditions.

In a narrow courtyard in Montréal or on a balcony, we review the proposed location, access points, and connection routing together before confirming the work.

Power supply and piping suitable for this model

The manufacturer specifies a 208/230 V, single-phase, 60 Hz power supply, a minimum circuit ampacity of 12 A, and maximum overcurrent protection of 15 A. The refrigeration connections are 1/4 in. for the liquid line and 1/2 in. for the gas line. The stated maximum length is 15 metres, with a maximum elevation difference of 10 metres.

This information is used to prepare the project; it does not replace verification of the nameplate and circuit sizing by the responsible professional. The conductor size must comply with the requirements applicable to the installation.

For a replacement, we also request an inspection of the existing lines before planning to reuse them. In our quote, we prefer to clearly distinguish between the components retained and those replaced. This clarification prevents a replacement price from being interpreted as automatically including all possible adaptations.

The technical steps to plan for during the installation

Our preparation of an HVAC installation for this YORK unit includes the following steps, in accordance with the manufacturer's requirements:

  1. Confirm the locations and supports, including clearances, service access, and the routing of the connections.
  2. Install and insulate the lines, make the connections, and prepare the condensate drainage.
  3. Check for leaks and evacuate the system, according to the prescribed procedures for the refrigeration circuit.
  4. Perform the operational tests, check water drainage, and explain the controls and routine maintenance.

We want the owner to know what was installed, where the accessible components are located, and which signs warrant a service call. Returning the unit to operation must not be limited to confirming that the unit blows air.

The following projects involve Sharp units, not this YORK unit. They illustrate situations encountered by our team during wall-mounted installations; they are not performance tests of the Z Series.

In Côte-des-Neiges: a leak detected in the existing lines

During a replacement on a balcony in Côte-des-Neiges, Montréal, we inspected the existing piping and found a leak. The lines were replaced as part of the project. The length included with this installation allowed the replacement to be completed without an additional charge for this portion of the piping.

Our takeaway from this project is a simple preparation rule: do not decide to keep the existing lines solely because they are already in place. For a YORK Z Series system, we want their condition and compatibility to be examined before finalizing the price and scope of work.

In Laval-des-Rapides: a location considered together with its drainage

In a residence in Laval-des-Rapides, we installed a wall-mounted unit in an interior stairwell. The project allowed condensate to drain by gravity, without an additional pump. We also adjusted the louvers and checked the airflow. The project report indicates that the occupants were pleased with the comfort and quiet operation.

We do not generalize this solution to all homes. Instead, we use this example to show why the location, drainage, and indoor configuration must be considered together.

Accessible maintenance, with limits to observe

The manual recommends cleaning the filters every three months, more frequently when the environment is dusty. We recommend turning off the power before carrying out the work, following the manufacturer’s procedure, and allowing the filters to dry before reinstalling them. Avoid getting electrical components wet or touching the fins.

We also distinguish normal phenomena from situations requiring intervention. In heating mode, steam may appear around the outdoor unit during defrosting. However, a burning smell, repeated circuit-breaker trips, or an indoor water leak warrant turning off the unit and calling a professional.

The 10-10-0 warranty, explained before purchase

Our fact sheet presents a warranty of 10 years on the compressor, 10 years on parts, and no labor coverage included in this plan. However, the stated duration must be read together with its conditions.

The warranty document for this generation notably provides extended ten-year coverage for parts and the compressor on certain residential installations, subject to registration by an authorized contractor within 60 days of installation. The conditions differ, in particular, depending on the application and product generation.

We therefore specify in the offer the coverage applicable to the equipment sold, the registration procedures, and the additional protections offered. When a labor warranty is being considered, we also recommend checking how travel and diagnosis are handled rather than relying solely on the number of years advertised.

The installed price must reflect the actual work

We determine the price of this YORK wall-mounted heat pump after defining the project. To prepare a comparable quote, we specify, among other things, the length of the connections, the outdoor support, electrical work, drainage, access requirements, and the possible removal of an old unit.

LogisVert: do not include unconfirmed financial assistance

Our product sheet indicates “no” for the ENERGY STAR and ENERGY STAR for cold climates sections. We therefore do not present this combination as automatically eligible for a subsidy.

Hydro-Québec specifies that heat pumps installed as of November 26, 2025 must be ENERGY STAR certified to qualify for LogisVert financial assistance. We therefore verify the exact combination and applicable criteria before including assistance in the project cost calculation.

The 28 SEER rating, the claim of heating down to −30 °C, and an AHRI reference do not replace this assessment. Our goal is to present an understandable budget without deducting an amount that the homeowner may ultimately not receive.
