Replacement of an old wall-mounted air conditioner in Sainte-Dorothée, Laval

Essential modernization for comfort and energy efficiency

At AirGreen , we often encounter this type of situation: an old wall-mounted air conditioner that is still functional, but has become energy-intensive and noisy. This is exactly the case with this built-in wall-mounted unit , installed several years ago in a condo in Sainte-Dorothée, Laval . The customer contacted us after noticing that his unit was having increasing difficulty cooling the room effectively and that it was producing abnormal noise.

Initial diagnosis

Our team of RBQ and CCQ certified technicians went on site to perform a complete inspection of the existing unit . It was an older PTAC type model , installed through the wall, typical of constructions from the early 2000s. After some electrical and pressure tests, our diagnosis confirmed:

  • A significant drop in cooling efficiency due to an aging compressor;

  • Leaks of R22 refrigerant , a gas now banned in Quebec;

  • A noise level above 60 dB , unacceptable for a modern living space;

  • Degraded wall insulation around the installation duct, causing air loss.

These findings made the repair uneconomical . We therefore recommended to the customer a complete replacement with a modern, energy-efficient and quiet HVAC system .

The proposed solution: a Midea R32 wall-mounted heat pump

For this type of configuration, we chose a Midea 12,000 BTU wall-mounted heat pump , equipped with R32 refrigerant, which is much more environmentally friendly. This model offers:

  • SEER 23 energy efficiency , perfect for condos and apartments;

  • A heating function down to -25°C , ideal for the Laval winter;

  • A discreet and silent design (less than 20 dB at low speed);

  • Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity for smart control via mobile app.

Steps of replacement

  1. Safe disassembly of the old wall unit and complete removal of the recessed sleeve.

  2. Wall frame repair : cleaning, sealing, and thermal insulation around the new opening.

  3. Installing the wall bracket and precise positioning of the Midea indoor unit.

  4. Drilling and passage of refrigeration lines to the outside, with protection by an aesthetic conduit.

  5. Installation of the outdoor condenser , carefully positioned on anti-vibration supports.

  6. Electrical connection , pressure tests and complete vacuuming of the refrigeration circuit.

  7. Start-up and calibration , followed by a demonstration of the functions to the customer.

Result: comfort, silence and energy savings

The change transformed the comfort of the room. Within the first few minutes of use, the customer noticed:

  • A uniform and stable temperature , without drafts;

  • An imperceptible noise level , even at night;

  • Electricity consumption reduced by around 35% , according to our estimates.
