An aging wall unit that no longer distributed air properly
In Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac, on the North Shore, our AirGreen team was called for a very common problem on older wall installations: a wall-mounted heat pump still running but unable to provide the expected comfort. An old wall unit, but still recoverable
The service photo shows an older design wall-mounted indoor unit, with a top suction grille, a horizontal air outlet, and a side control panel indicating operation and timer lights. The exact brand was not clearly readable from the image, but the format corresponds to a residential wall-mounted heat pump of the mini-split type, probably installed for several years. The exact capacity had to be confirmed on the nameplate, but this type of unit is often found in powers of 9,000, 12,000, or 18,000 BTU/h depending on the room size and pairing with the outdoor compressor.
This detail is important: an older device can still be repaired if critical components are functional. At AirGreen, we don’t automatically treat an aging system as equipment to replace. We first check what can be reasonably fixed, especially when the failure comes from lack of maintenance, air blockage, or an accessible component.
Symptoms reported by the client
Before our arrival, the client had noticed several specific signs:
- Airflow was low, even at high speed.
- The room took a long time to reach the requested temperature.
- The air sometimes came out cool, sometimes almost neutral.

Indoor inspection: filters, turbine, and air flap
Our technician first inspected the wall unit’s filters. On mini-split systems, filters are often the first barrier against dust, pet hair, textile fibers, and airborne particles. When saturated, air circulation is poor, the indoor coil exchanges less efficiently, and the fan has to work harder.
In this case, the filters were dusty, but the problem went further. The indoor turbine, located behind the air outlet, had significant buildup. Technical cleaning of the indoor unit
Cleaning a wall-mounted heat pump is not just about wiping the front. To restore performance, you need to address the areas that actually affect airflow and heat exchange.
We carried out targeted cleaning:
Filter cleaning
The filters were removed, cleaned, and inspected to check their condition. A cracked or deformed filter can allow too much dust to pass through to the coil and fan.
Fan wheel cleaning
The indoor fan wheel was carefully cleaned to remove deposits accumulated on the blades. This step is essential to restore stable airflow and reduce vibration noise.
Indoor coil inspection
The indoor coil was checked for signs of dirt buildup, frost, excessive moisture, or partial blockage. A dirty coil can reduce heating and cooling capacity while promoting odors.
Condensate tray check
We inspected the drainage area to confirm there was no backflow or accumulation of stagnant water. A partially clogged drain can cause odors, water leaks, and sometimes unit shutdown if a protection feature is present.
Electronic check and unit controls
On an older wall unit, the controls can also be at fault. The side panel showed the operation and timer indicator lights, which allowed us to observe if the unit was correctly receiving commands and if it displayed abnormal behavior.

- Speed changes.
- Response of the louvers.
- Operation indicator lights.
- Stability of heating and cooling mode.
- Temperature reading from the indoor sensor.
The indoor temperature sensor was slightly influenced by the unit’s location near the ceiling, where warm air can accumulate. This phenomenon is common in rooms where the unit is installed high, near a corner, or above cabinets. If the sensor thinks the room is warmer or cooler than it actually is, the unit may reduce its power too early or operate irregularly.
Performance check after cleaning
After cleaning and basic checks, we restarted the unit to measure the change in behavior. The airflow was noticeably more consistent, and the rubbing noise had decreased. The airflow was also better directed, allowing the room to warm more efficiently.
We then observed the behavior over a full cycle to verify that the unit did not stop too quickly and that the output temperature remained consistent. A wall-mounted heat pump must be evaluated while it is actually running, as several faults only appear after a few minutes of operation: speed drop, vibration, fan stopping, frost on the coil, or unstable behavior of the electronic board.
In this case, the system regained much more satisfactory operation after cleaning and adjustment. No water leaks were observed during the test, and the device responded correctly to the main controls.

Cleaning only the filters
Filters are important, but they are not always enough. The blower, coil, and condensate tray can also be dirty.
Forcing the louvers manually
The louvers are often controlled by small motors. Forcing them by hand can break the mechanism or misalign the control.
Using unsuitable products
Some cleaners can damage the plastic, coil fins, or leave odorous residues. HVAC cleaning must be done with methods suitable for wall units.
Ignoring the outdoor unit
Even if the problem seems to come from the indoor unit, the outdoor unit must be checked when overall performance is low. A dirty condenser, a weak outdoor fan, or abnormal pressure can also reduce efficiency.
Advice given to the customer after the service
After restoring service, we explained to the customer how to monitor the unit over the next few days. We recommended cleaning the filters regularly, keeping the air outlet clear, avoiding blocking the unit with tall furniture, and scheduling more thorough maintenance if odors, noises, or performance losses return.
