Repair of a Fujitsu Wall-Mounted Heat Pump on the South Shore

A Fujitsu Halcyon heat pump that started but no longer delivered its full capacity

On the South Shore, our AirGreen team responded to a service call for a Fujitsu Halcyon DC Inverter wall-mounted heat pump whose outdoor unit was showing irregular behavior. The device was installed on the ground, against an exterior wall covered with beige siding, with refrigerant lines protected by a vertical cover and a nearby electrical disconnect box. The overall setup was clean, but several clues pointed us toward a problem related to the outdoor part of the system.

The client contacted us because the heat pump could no longer maintain indoor comfort. In cooling mode, air came out of the wall unit, but it was not cold enough. In heating mode, the system sometimes started normally but lost power after a few minutes. The indoor unit responded to commands, the indicator lights seemed normal at first, but the outdoor unit did not always follow the demand.

This type of symptom is common on older Fujitsu Inverter systems: the system seems to be running, but a weakened outdoor component prevents the refrigeration cycle from remaining stable. In this case, it was important not to jump to conclusions about a refrigerant shortage or a faulty compressor. A proper diagnosis required a complete inspection of the condenser, outdoor fan, electrical connections, control board, and air circulation conditions.

Description of the inspected equipment

The device was a Fujitsu Halcyon DC Inverter wall-mounted heat pump, a residential mini-split type, probably with a capacity around 12,000 to 18,000 BTU, based on the condenser size and visible configuration. This kind of system is very common on the South Shore, in Longueuil, Brossard, Saint-Lambert, Boucherville, as well as in many residential areas around Montreal.

A wall-mounted heat pump like this includes two main parts:

  • a wall-mounted indoor unit that blows heated or cooled air;
  • an outdoor unit that contains the compressor, coil, Inverter board, fan, and control components.

In the photo, the Fujitsu outdoor unit is positioned near the wall, with the front ventilation grille clear. However, even when the outside looks relatively clean, the rear and side coil can accumulate dust, pollen, fine leaves, lint, and dirt. This buildup harms heat exchange and can cause pressure rise or performance loss.

Symptoms reported by the customer

During the call, the customer described specific symptoms:

  • normal start of the indoor unit;
  • air blown, but temperature not hot or cold enough;
  • intermittent outdoor operation;
  • outdoor fan sometimes slow to start;
  • light vibration noise at certain times;
  • short cycles when heating or cooling demand was higher;
  • unstable comfort in the main room.

These signs pointed to an anomaly on the outdoor unit side. In an Inverter system, performance depends on the condenser's ability to modulate correctly. If the outdoor fan does not move enough air, if the coil is clogged, or if a sensor transmits a wrong reading, the control board may reduce power or stop the cycle to protect the unit.

HVAC diagnosis: understanding the real cause before replacing parts

At AirGreen, we approach this type of HVAC repair methodically. A Fujitsu Inverter heat pump has several protection devices. A shutdown or power drop is not always a direct fault: sometimes it is a protective reaction to abnormal temperature, pressure, or signal.

Visual inspection of the condenser

The first step was the inspection of the outdoor unit. We checked:

  • the overall condition of the casing;
  • the front grille;
  • the clearance around the unit;
  • the passage of the refrigerant pipes;
  • the condition of the insulation on the lines;
  • the position of the line cover;
  • the presence of debris around the coil;
  • access to the electrical box.

The unit was not crushed or blocked by an object in front of the grille, but the rear coil had a dirt buildup greater than what could be seen from the front. This situation is common: the client sees the condenser’s front, which seems acceptable, while the exchanger behind the unit is struggling to breathe.

Outdoor fan check

We then observed the behavior of the outdoor fan. The motor started, but the speed was not always stable. A fan that runs irregularly can cause several problems:

  • poor heat evacuation in cooling mode;
  • difficulty capturing heat in heating mode;
  • temperature rise in the condenser;
  • protection shutdown by the board;
  • vibration noise;
  • gradual performance drop.

On this Fujitsu system, the fan motor showed signs of wear. Rotation was possible, but not perfectly smooth. The diagnosis confirmed a weakened outdoor fan motor, combined with a coil that required thorough cleaning.

Electrical check and Inverter board

Before replacing a component, we verified the electrical supply at the disconnect box, then inspected the internal connections. The supply voltage was stable. The connections showed no major damage, but some terminals were checked and tightened as a precaution.

We also checked the behavior of the Inverter board. No obvious signs of burning or visual damage were observed. The board was sending the command correctly, but the fan motor did not respond with the expected consistency. This confirmed that the main cause was the outdoor fan motor, not a faulty electronic board.

Refrigeration circuit check

A refrigerant shortage can produce similar symptoms: low performance, unstable cycles, frosting, insufficient temperature. We therefore measured the operating parameters to validate the circuit. No clear signs of an active leak were found during this intervention. The temperature differences and system behavior were more consistent with poor heat dissipation caused by the fan and coil fouling.

A targeted repair to stabilize the heat pump's operation

After the diagnosis, our intervention focused on restoring the performance of the outdoor unit. The goal was to reestablish effective heat exchange and prevent protection shutdowns.

We carried out the following steps:

  • safe power shutdown of the unit;
  • opening the service panel;
  • inspection of electrical components;
  • checking the control board;
  • cleaning the outdoor coil;
  • cleaning the grille and air circulation areas;
  • replacement of the defective outdoor fan motor;
  • checking the fan blade and balance;
  • tightening accessible connections;
  • inspection of refrigerant line insulation;
  • full restart in air conditioning mode;
  • operation test in heating mode;
  • measuring the discharge temperature inside.

Replacing the outdoor fan motor restored stable and regular rotation. The condenser could again properly release or absorb heat, depending on the requested mode. After cleaning the coil, the difference in behavior was clear: the outdoor unit worked with less strain, and the heat pump maintained its cycle longer without premature shutdown.

Result achieved after the intervention

Once the repair was completed, we let the system run long enough to confirm its stability. The Fujitsu heat pump returned to much more consistent operation. The indoor unit blew colder air in cooling and warmer air in heating. The customer noticed the room reached the requested temperature faster.

Observed results:

  • stable outdoor fan;
  • reduced vibration noise;
  • longer and more regular cycles;
  • better discharge temperature;
  • improved air conditioning performance;
  • more reliable heating response;
  • protection shutdown not reproduced after testing.

This repair helped avoid premature replacement of the heat pump. On a Fujitsu system still structurally viable, replacing the right part at the right time can significantly extend the equipment’s lifespan.

Why the outdoor fan is so important

The outdoor fan is sometimes underestimated. Many homeowners mainly associate the performance of a heat pump with the compressor. However, without proper airflow through the outdoor coil, the compressor cannot operate under good conditions.

In air conditioning mode, the outdoor unit must release the heat captured inside the house. If the fan is weak, this heat remains trapped in the condenser, which increases pressure and reduces efficiency.

In heating mode, the heat pump must extract heat from the outside air. If air does not properly pass through the coil, the unit loses capacity and may trigger protections.

Mistakes to avoid with a Fujitsu wall-mounted heat pump

Ignoring small vibration noises

A slight noise can indicate a worn fan motor, an unbalanced blade, or dirt buildup. The faster the intervention, the more secondary damage is avoided.

Cleaning only the condenser’s front

The front grille is only the visible part. The rear and side coil must also be inspected. A unit that looks clean from the front can be clogged at the back.

Jumping too quickly to a refrigerant shortage

A heat pump that cools less effectively does not always need a recharge. Adding refrigerant without diagnosis can worsen the problem. First, air flow, sensors, fan, pressures, and temperatures must be checked.

Letting the line insulation deteriorate

The insulation on the refrigerant lines protects the system’s performance. When worn by sun, moisture, or time, it must be repaired to avoid efficiency losses.
