A KOOLKING wall-mounted heat pump that was cooling less effectively and posed a condensate risk

In the West Island, our AirGreen team was called for a service call on a KOOLKING wall-mounted heat pump installed high up near a window in a residential room where the device was mainly used to maintain stable comfort during hot periods. The indoor unit, with a modern design featuring a white front and dark sides, looked visually clean at first glance. Yet, the customer noticed a drop in performance: air was coming out of the device, but the cooling was no longer as effective, and unusual humidity seemed to appear after prolonged cycles.

This type of problem is often misleading. A wall-mounted heat pump may seem to operate normally because the lights turn on, the fan starts, and the vent opens. But if the airflow, condensate drainage, heat exchange, or communication with the outdoor unit are not optimal, the actual comfort in the room quickly decreases.

In this case, the KOOLKING device was a mini-split wall-mounted heat pump, probably with a residential capacity around 12,000 BTU, based on its size and location. The installation was typical of wall systems found in many houses and condos in the West Island, Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore: a compact indoor unit installed near the ceiling, which draws air from the top and redistributes it through the lower vent.

Symptoms reported by the customer

The customer was not describing a complete breakdown. The device started, responded to the remote control, and blew air. The problem was more subtle but significant enough to affect comfort:

  • Slower cooling than before.
  • Less cold air blown, especially after several minutes of operation.
  • Persistent feeling of humidity in the room.
  • Irregular airflow, with the impression that the unit was working harder.
  • Possible condensate buildup around the indoor unit during long air conditioning periods.
  • No obvious error code, which made the problem less clear to the customer.

When a wall unit no longer delivers full performance without showing an error code, it is important not to jump to conclusions about refrigerant shortage or compressor failure. In many cases, the cause is internal: loaded filters, dirty turbine, partially blocked evaporator, slow drain, sensor affected by poor airflow, or mispositioned diffusion flap.

Inspection of the KOOLKING indoor unit

Upon arrival, we started with the indoor unit. Since the unit is installed near the ceiling with limited clearance above, the air return could be affected by dust buildup in the upper part. This is an important point: a clean front does not guarantee that the inside of the machine is clean.

We inspected the filters, return grille, evaporator, turbine, condensate tray, and air outlet flap. The goal was to understand if air was properly passing through the unit and if the moisture removed from the air was being properly drained.

Filters and air return

The filters showed an accumulation of fine dust. They were not completely blocked, but sufficiently loaded to reduce airflow. Condensate pan and drain

Since the client mentioned unusual humidity, we paid special attention to the condensate drain. In cooling mode, the indoor unit removes moisture from the air. This water must flow properly outside or to a designated drainage point. If the drain is slowed, water can accumulate in the pan, create odors, cause moisture marks, or eventually leak.

During the flow test, we found that water passed through, but too slowly. The drain was not completely blocked, but it was restricted. This situation is common: the unit does not necessarily drain every day, but on humid days or during prolonged cycles, the system can produce more condensate than the drain can evacuate efficiently.

Diagnosis: a combined problem of air circulation and drainage

Our diagnosis showed that the performance drop was not due to a single cause. The KOOLKING wall-mounted heat pump suffered from a combined problem:

Reduced airflow

The filters, evaporator, and fan limited air circulation. The unit had to work longer to cool the room.

Weakened heat exchange

The condensate drainage was too slow, creating a risk of backflow and a feeling of humidity.

Less representative temperature reading

When air circulates poorly around the unit, the internal sensor may respond less accurately to the actual room temperature. This can cause less consistent cycles.

This type of diagnosis is important because it prevents unnecessary interventions. Adding refrigerant without checking the indoor unit would have been a bad approach. Replacing an electronic board without testing the airflow and the drain would also have been premature.

Repair performed by AirGreen

After identifying the causes, we carried out a complete intervention on the KOOLKING indoor unit.

Cleaning of filters and intake grille

We removed and cleaned the filters, then cleared the air intake areas. This first step helped restore better suction. Air needed to be able to enter the unit freely before even reaching the evaporator.

Evaporator cleaning

The evaporator was carefully cleaned to remove deposits without damaging the fins. On a wall unit, the fins are delicate. Too aggressive handling can bend them and further reduce airflow. Our intervention restored better heat exchange, essential for producing colder, more stable air.

Technical cleaning of the fan

We then cleaned the fan to remove buildup that was reducing airflow. After this step, the unit’s airflow became more consistent. The change was noticeable: the air came out more regularly and was better distributed in the room.

Unblocking and rinsing the drain

The drain was cleared and rinsed. We then performed a new flow test to confirm that water drained quickly without stagnating in the tray. This final test is essential. A drain that seems clear for a few seconds can still be problematic if it remains partially blocked further down the line.

Checking the flap and air distribution

The lower flap was checked to ensure the air was properly directed into the room. Poor flap orientation can create an uneven comfort sensation, especially when the unit is installed near a window or in a corner. After adjustment, the airflow was more consistent.

Final test in cooling mode

Once cleaning and unblocking were completed, we restarted the unit in cooling mode. The output temperature was more stable, the airflow stronger, and the overall operation smoother. No condensate backup was observed during the test, and the unit responded properly to controls.

Cleaning only the filters

Filters are important, but they are not always enough. A dirty fan can significantly reduce airflow even when the filters have just been cleaned.

Automatically assuming a refrigerant shortage

Less cold air can be caused by reduced airflow. The diagnosis must always confirm the cause before any work on the refrigeration circuit.

An intervention that improves comfort without unnecessary replacement

At the end of the service call, the KOOLKING wall-mounted heat pump was operating much more stably. The client noticed stronger airflow, more effective cooling, and a reduced risk related to condensate. The space became more comfortable without needing to replace the unit.
