Repair of a PurePro Wall-Mounted Heat Pump in Le Sud-Ouest

An outdoor unit installed high that revealed several possible causes of performance loss

In the Sud-Ouest area of Montreal, our AirGreen team was called for a PurePro wall-mounted heat pump repair whose operation was becoming increasingly unstable. The customer reported a drop in indoor comfort, especially during warmer periods, with the impression that the device ran for a long time without achieving the expected result. At times, the wall unit blew air, but the coolness was not consistent. The system also seemed to produce a louder outdoor noise than before.

On site, the installation configuration immediately guided our diagnosis. The finger pointed precisely to the underside of the unit, indicating the area to inspect: compressor base, drainage opening, support points, and condition of the fasteners. In many HVAC interventions, this part of the outdoor unit is neglected because it is less visible. Yet, it is often there that the causes of noise, abnormal leakage, vibration, or loss of efficiency are revealed.

Symptoms reported by the customer

The client did not describe a total failure, but rather a gradual degradation. This detail is important. A complete failure usually points to a clear cause: power supply, electronic board, compressor, fan motor, capacitor, or communication between units. A gradual loss of performance requires a more detailed analysis.

The main symptoms were as follows:

  • cooling less effective than before;
  • longer running time;
  • more noticeable outdoor noise;
  • vibration felt at startup;
  • leakage under the outdoor unit;
  • doubt about the stability of the supports;
  • outdoor maintenance probably delayed.

In a wall system, these signs can be related to a dirty outdoor coil, a partially obstructed outdoor fan, an insufficient refrigerant charge, an inaccurate sensor, a worn control board, weakened fasteners, or simply a lack of maintenance forcing the machine to work longer.

Diagnosis: do not confuse noise, drainage, and refrigerant failure

Our first step was to secure access to the outdoor unit. When a compressor is installed so high on a brick wall, the intervention requires a rigorous method. Before dismantling or handling anything, we check the overall stability of the device, the condition of the brackets, the proximity of openings, the routing of refrigerant lines, and the condition of visible wiring.

Accessible fasteners were checked and tightened when necessary. We also checked areas where vibrations could be transmitted to the wall mount. In several high installations, a simple vibration becomes more noticeable because the wall acts as a resonance surface. The diagnosis should therefore not be limited to the noise itself, but to how this noise propagates.

The underside of the unit was also inspected to confirm that the observed water did not come from a crack, a displaced component, or a significant obstruction. The flow was consistent with operating conditions and the general state of the device, but we recommended monitoring the area after the next cycles to confirm that the phenomenon does not worsen.

Result: a more stable wall-mounted heat pump and a customer better protected against future breakdowns

You should also avoid ignoring the condition of the supports. Rusted or weakened brackets should never be overlooked, especially when the unit is installed above a passage area. Even if the device still works, periodic checks help prevent unnecessary risks.

When to suspect a more serious breakdown

In this case, the intervention improved performance without major replacement. However, we informed the client of the signs that would justify a more thorough inspection:

  • the outdoor unit starts then quickly stops;
  • the air blown inside remains lukewarm despite a strong demand;
  • the outdoor fan no longer starts;
  • the compressor makes an abnormal noise;
  • an error displays on the indoor unit;
  • the circuit breaker trips;
  • ice forms out of season;
  • performance drops again after cleaning.

If any of these symptoms recur, a complete diagnosis of the refrigerant circuit, sensors, fan motor, electronic board, and electrical supply would be necessary.
