Choosing a heat pump installer: quotes, licences and scams to avoid
Since November 2024, a seller is no longer allowed to solicit you at home to sell you a heat pump. Even so, in April 2026 the OPC, the RBQ and Hydro-Québec issued a joint warning. This guide gives you the tools to choose for yourself: test your situation, read a quote line by line, check a licence and work out your deadlines.
It all comes down to the first contact: who called whom?
The same heat pump can be sold legally or illegally. The difference: who made the first move.
Three situations, three very different rules.
What changes depending on how the sale started.

Nine lines that should make you raise an eyebrow.
These are the red flags published by Quebec’s Office de la protection du consommateur (OPC). Tick the ones you’ve seen or heard.
Tick what you’ve seen or heard. A single sign is enough to take a pause.
Twelve lines. Each one protects you from something.
Click a line: we tell you what it’s for, what happens if it’s missing, and where the rule comes from.
12 lines to look for
Name, full address and phone number
A P.O. box or an email address isn’t enough: without an address, the company can’t be checked or found.
Ten items on the invoice, or the grant gets stuck.
The list comes from Hydro-Québec’s official guide (version 1.10, September 15, 2026). Show it to your installer before you sign.
Photograph the nameplateAn RBQ licence, yes. But does it have the right 3 subclasses?
Pick your project: we show you which subclasses to ask for, according to the RBQ’s guide. For LogisVert, Hydro-Québec requires the RBQ licences appropriate to the work.
According to the RBQ, a wall-mounted heat pump falls under both ventilation and refrigeration: one without the other isn’t enough (illustration 18 of the RBQ guide). The electrical connection requires 16.
A gentle monthly payment can hide double the price.
As the OPC reminds us, small payments are often misleading. Always look at the total amount you’ll pay.
Calculated for a loan with equal monthly payments. Rates are examples only: your lender will give you yours.
An itinerant merchant is not allowed to offer you financing. If you borrow, you choose the lender.

For a heat pump sold at home, the law gives you 1 year. For other itinerant contracts, 10 days.

Six traps we see on quotes.
Each one takes a second to spot, once you know what to look for.
A price with no model
Without the brand, models and AHRI number, you can neither compare nor check the LogisVert grant.
The grant already deducted
LogisVert is paid to you by Hydro-Québec, by mail, after review. Presented as a guaranteed discount, you’re the one carrying the risk.
Financing offered at the door
An itinerant merchant cannot offer you credit or a long-term lease. You choose your lender.
“Hydro-Québec sent us”
Hydro-Québec does not recommend any contractor and does not authorize anyone to offer services on its behalf.
Sign right now
An offer that expires tonight is an OPC warning sign. A good quote gets reread with a clear head.
A P.O. box as an address
Ask for a street number, street, city and phone number. Without them, there’s no way to check and no easy recourse.
The checklist for the day before you sign.
Ten points. If one is missing, it’s not the time to sign.
Tick as you go.
