Two exterior units for optimal comfort in a Montreal duplex
At AirGreen , we recently completed the installation of Gree wall-mounted heat pumps in a duplex in the Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie neighborhood of Montreal . The owner wanted to provide independent comfort to each unit while optimizing the building's energy consumption. The solution: two compact outdoor units, each powering its own indoor system, securely mounted to the building's rear wall.
Installation context
The residence, typical of Montreal brick buildings, features a rear terrace with a metal staircase and a flat roof covered with gravel. This context required a tailored approach to integrate the equipment without obstructing exterior access. Our technicians opted for a mid-height wall installation, above the flat roof level, to protect the units from water and snow accumulation while maintaining sufficient clearance for optimal ventilation.
Technical details of the equipment
-
Brand : Gree
-
Type : Wall-mounted heat pump (mini-split)
-
Number of units : 2 independent condensers
-
Fixing : Galvanized wall brackets with anti-vibration dampers
-
Refrigeration ducts : Short route and clean sheathing along the facade
-
Drainage : Gravity drainage adapted to the configuration of the flat roof
Each outdoor unit powers an indoor wall-mounted heat pump, allowing the temperature of each unit to be controlled independently. This system provides occupants with tailored comfort while reducing energy consumption compared to traditional electric heating.
Challenges encountered and solutions provided
-
Flat roof constraint : The gravel-covered roof made it impossible to install the units directly on the ground. The solution was to install the condensers on sturdy wall brackets, allowing for a durable and secure mounting.
-
Ductwork : The refrigerant pipes had to be discreet so as not to detract from the façade. Our installers used discreet white ducts, perfectly fitted to the wall's outline.
-
Safety and maintenance : The space between the two units and the rear terrace has been designed to facilitate maintenance work and air circulation.
Benefits for the owner and occupants
-
Four-season comfort : Gree heat pumps provide efficient air conditioning in summer and efficient heating in fall and spring.
-
Energy independence : Each home has its own system, avoiding conflicts related to the distribution of energy costs.
-
Electricity savings : Thanks to their inverter technology, these units reduce consumption and allow substantial savings compared to electric baseboard heaters.
-
Durability : Gree equipment is designed to withstand Quebec climatic conditions, including periods of intense frost.
Energy efficiency grants and programs
Gree heat pumps in this range meet the efficiency criteria required by several government programs, including the Chauffez vert program and certain assistance offered by Hydro-Québec . These financial incentives make the investment even more advantageous for owners of plexes or single-family homes.
