A living room that is better heated in winter and cooler in summer: discreet installation near a patio door, short lines and high efficiency
In this Chomedey (Laval) apartment, our AirGreen team installed a new generationSharp wall-mounted heat pump (R-32 refrigerant) to stabilize the comfort of a living space open to a patio door . The client's goal: efficient heating in cold weather , quiet air conditioning during heat waves, and clean integration without major work. We designed a very short path between the wall-mounted head and the outside, with gravity condensate drainage , to optimize performance and reduce maintenance.
The context: long room, patio door and family circulation
-
Elongated main room , circulation along a clear wall which ends with a patio door opening onto a balcony.
-
Diffusion requirements : Avoid direct air currents on the seating area, while sweeping the entire volume.
-
Noise : priority to silence so as not to disturb daily activities (reading, television, teleworking).
-
Maintenance : Easy access to washable filter and covers for annual HVAC maintenance.
Why a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump (R-32) for this project?
Seasonal efficiency and cold behavior
Sharp 's new generation R-32 wall-mounted units feature high seasonal efficiencies (SEER/HSPF higher than the R-410A generation) and reliable heating at low temperatures , essential for the Montreal and Laval regions . The variable-speed compressor finely modulates power to maintain the setpoint smoothly, thus limiting consumption.
Acoustic comfort and air quality
The internal design promotes very low noise levels and wide diffusion thanks to the panoramic shutter. The washable filters can be removed without tools, simplifying HVAC maintenance and maintaining good air quality.
Adaptation to the room
In a long room open to the outside, the high wall head, offset from the passage, allows for efficient transverse sweeping . The fan mode and shutter angle adjustment have been set to avoid dead zones near the patio door and to protect the sensors from solar gain.
Our step-by-step HVAC installation methodology
1) Study and preparation of the wall
We validate the installation template on a supporting support (upright behind the plasterboard or suitable dowels), then we ensure:
-
sufficient clearance above the patio door,
-
a clear blowing on the main axis of the part,
-
the slope of the drain to favor gravity evacuation (the most reliable and silent solution).
2) Drilling and technical crossing
-
Through hole (≈ 65–70 mm) in the corner near the patio door to exit directly to the outside and reduce the length of the connections.
-
Installation of a bulkhead , a vapor barrier and protection of the insulation to prevent any abrasion in the core of the wall.
-
Continuous slope towards the outside for the gravity drain : no condensate pump, therefore zero additional noise and simplified maintenance .
3) Refrigeration and electrical connections
-
Short lines (typically ≤ 3–4 m), which reduces pressure losses and improves COP in heating.
-
Flared fittings tightened to controlled torque , deep vacuum (≤ 500 microns), then nitrogen leak test before opening the valves.
-
Shielded communication cable and power supply in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications, with clear marking for subsequent service.
4) Outdoor unit and winter protection
Outside, we position the condenser on a support clear of the ground (brackets or anti-vibration base) in order to:
-
stay above the snow level in winter,
-
ensure suction and blowing clearances ,
-
allow automatic defrosting without air recirculation.
We direct water drainage away from traffic areas to avoid ice .
5) Commissioning and optimization
-
Controlled start , pressure check, superheat and subcooling , current control.
-
Calibration of fan speeds, AUTO mode and inter-season setpoints to maintain modulating operation .
-
Customer training : best practices (stable setting, filter maintenance), use of dehumidification mode in summer, programming advice.
Visible details and key technical choices
Location near a patio door
-
The wall head is installed high up , aligned with the ceiling drop, to avoid air shock on the occupant and to benefit from a natural air mixture with the glazed area.
-
The blowing angle is adjusted to sweep the length of the room, without blowing directly on people or curtains.
Minimum route and finishes
-
Immediate output to the outside as close as possible to the unit: reduced connection length , limited losses, rapid response in heating and air conditioning.
-
Discreet capping and watertight fittings to protect connections and facilitate future maintenance .
Gravity drain
-
Condensate drainage is by gravity thanks to the slope of the feedthrough. Advantages: no pump vibration, total silence and increased reliability .
Results measured after commissioning
-
Fast temperature rise in cold weather thanks to short lines and compressor modulation.
-
Uniformity of comfort throughout the room, even with regular opening of the patio door .
-
Very low noise , compatible with teleworking and relaxation.
-
Controlled consumption : the R-32 heat pump provides more useful heat per kWh than electric baseboards, reducing seasonal bills.
HVAC Maintenance: Our AirGreen Recommendations
To be done by the occupant
-
Clean filters every 4 to 8 weeks depending on use and the presence of animals.
-
Keep 1.5 m clear in front of the wall head for optimal blowing .
-
In winter, visually check that the outdoor unit remains free of snow and ice .
Annual professional interview
-
Inspection of heat exchange (interior/exterior).
-
Checking the tightening , drain , and sealing .
-
Control of refrigeration parameters to maintain efficiency and longevity .
Grants and local compliance
When configuration and performance allow, we direct our clients to the grant programs available for high-efficiency heat pumps . Our installations comply with RBQ requirements and good installation practices in Greater Montreal (clearances, protections, anchors), whether in Montreal , Laval , Longueuil , on the South Shore or the North Shore .
What we bring to a site like this
Rigorous sizing
Choosing the right capacity (BTU) depends on the envelope, orientation, infiltration, internal contributions and use. We avoid oversizing (short cycles, discomfort) as well as undersizing (noise, wear).
Optimized route = efficiency and reliability
Our priority is to obtain the shortest possible connections , a gravity drain , and fixings that simplify maintenance . The result: higher performance , fewer risks and a lower total cost of ownership .
AirGreen Monitoring
After commissioning, we offer seasonal monitoring , preventive maintenance and support . In case of changing needs (e.g. adding a second zone), we offer scalable solutions compatible with the existing configuration.
