Installation of a Sharp R-32 wall-mounted heat pump in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension

A discreet, efficient HVAC upgrade designed for Montreal winters

At AirGreen , we design custom HVAC systems for plexes and condos in Greater Montreal. In this project in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension , we are installing a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump (R-32 refrigerant) designed to provide four-season comfort, with particular attention to aesthetics, performance, and durability in northern climates.

The residential context and our objectives

The accommodation is typical of the area: rooms grouped around a corridor, a wooden rear terrace, and an outdoor space semi-sheltered by a trellis. The client wanted:

  • economical heating in winter and silent air conditioning in summer;

  • discreet integration inside and out;

  • a robust installation that is snow-resistant and easy to maintain.

We offer a Sharp R-32 wall-mounted heat pump (typical capacity 12,000 to 18,000 BTU for this size of housing), known for its inverter technology and stable performance at low temperatures . Choosing R-32 reduces the environmental footprint and improves performance compared to older R-410A systems.

Visible installation details: consider location for performance

Indoor unit: uniform diffusion and silence

  • The Sharp wall-mounted head is mounted high under the ceiling, centered to sweep the room and push conditioned air into the living areas.

  • The independent flap and horizontal grille allow ample airflow at low speed; the feeling is homogeneous and the noise imperceptible in normal operation.

  • The rear drilling is neat and covered , guaranteeing a short path for the refrigeration connections and condensate drainage by gravity (no additional pump = less maintenance).

  • The wall passage is sealed to prevent any infiltration of cold air or humidity and to preserve seasonal performance.

Outdoor unit: clearance, protection and stability

  • The Sharp R-32 condenser is installed on a raised galvanized steel support , fixed on plates to the decking:

    • clearing the ground to stay above snow accumulation;

    • easy maintenance (de-icing, cleaning of the base basin);

    • optimal ventilation for suction and blowing.

  • We maintain a clear setback from the trellis to prevent any recirculation of hot air in heating mode.

  • The disconnect box and electrical conduit are installed on the wall, at service height, with anti-drip buckles and watertight clamping .

  • Protective covers (capping) ensure a clean route protected from UV/freeze-thaw, contributing to the longevity of the line insulation .

Choosing the right power: methodology and benchmarks

We size the heat pump according to:

  • the conditioned surface , orientation and level of insulation;

  • ceiling height and room layout ;

  • use (daily occupation, desired instructions).

In apartments in the area, common configurations are 12,000 BTU (open main room) or 15-18,000 BTU (deeper or semi-partitioned area). We aim for long and stable operation , avoiding short cycles and maximizing seasonal efficiency (high SEER/HSPF ).

Cold Climate Performance: What We Validate

Even if the exact model is not displayed to the reader, the Sharp R-32 range selected aims to:

  • reliable heating down to approximately −25°C depending on configuration;

  • optimized defrosting and quiet fans;

  • substantial energy savings compared to electric convectors.

Expected result for the customer: stable comfort in January-February, a better controlled bill , and very discreet cooling in summer.

Refrigeration and electrical routing: rigor and cleanliness

  • Short connection length : direct wall-to-wall path, minimizing load losses and facilitating maintenance.

  • Nitrogen brazing , leak testing, deep vacuum and load checked according to the manufacturer's table.

  • Condensate management by gravity , controlled slope, outlet protected from passages and freezing zones.

  • Communication/power wiring protected in the covers; external disconnection compliant and marked.

Safety, durability and acoustic comfort

  • Anti-vibration pads under the condenser and rigidity of the support limit transmission to the decking.

  • Defrost clearances preserved: we leave the rear and the blowing free of any obstacles.

  • Recommendations for use by the customer:

    • keep 30 to 60 cm free around the unit;

    • clean the internal filters every 1 to 3 months;

    • clear snow at the foot of the support after storms.

Grants and Eligibility

In Greater Montreal ( Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, North Shore, South Shore ), high-efficiency wall-mounted heat pumps using a new-generation refrigerant (such as R-32 ) are generally eligible for assistance when low-temperature performance criteria are met. We support our clients in:

  • verification of admissible models ;

  • preparation of documents (detailed invoices, certification numbers, photos);

  • submission to active programs.

What the customer gains on a daily basis

  • Main auxiliary heating in living rooms with better controlled consumption.

  • Fine and quiet air conditioning during the heat of July and August.

  • Improved air quality thanks to washable filters and circulation-induced air renewal.

  • Mastered aesthetics : minimalist design heads, aligned hoods, tidy electrical equipment.

Pitfalls we systematically avoid

  1. Air recirculation to the condenser (blowing returned to the suction through an obstacle) — we validate the clearances and orientation.

  2. Height too low - in snowy alleys, this hinders defrosting; hence the raised support .

  3. Condensate pump unnecessary - source of noise and maintenance; here, gravity is preferred.

  4. Leaky holes - energy losses and humidity risks; we seal and insulate .

  5. Connections too long - overconsumption and reduced capacity; we optimize routes .

HVAC Maintenance: Our Simple and Effective Plan

  • Spring : cleaning the filters, checking the external covers and gently washing the external exchanger.

  • Mid-summer : check for plant clearance and proper condensate drainage.

  • Autumn : visual inspection, tightening of accessible connections, testing of heating/air conditioning modes.

  • Winter : clearing snow around the support, checking defrosting (normal noises/stops).

Annual maintenance by our technicians extends the life of the equipment and maintains seasonal performance .
