The context: a dining area open to the living room, a brick balcony, and a need for four-season comfort
In this typical Montreal intra-muros dwelling, the room to be treated is an open dining area, extended by a living room opening onto a brick balcony . Between circulation, furniture and moldings, space is lacking. We retained the high installation of the Sharp interior head on a central split : it blows beyond the sideboard without disturbing the table, crosses the room towards the living room and creates an air sweep which naturally reaches the patio door. Outside, the condenser is placed on the balcony, on a raised base with anti-vibration pads to limit sound transmission to the slab and keep the equipment out of the snow.
What we have put in place for a clean, reliable and lasting result
Interior placement: diffusion, silence and maintenance access
-
Installation height : just below the cornice to promote air mixing and aesthetics.
-
Clearances : sides and bottom compliant for suction and oscillation of the shutters.
-
Service : The front can be opened without removing the molding; the fan roller and evaporator remain accessible for annual HVAC maintenance .
-
Acoustics : permanent inverter mode at low speed in maintenance; we adjust the flow rate at night so as not to encroach on the peace and quiet of the accommodation.
Short and clean refrigeration route
The head is placed a few dozen centimeters from the wall overlooking the balcony. We create a single wall crossing and a refrigerated path of only about 2 to 4 meters :
-
fewer losses and preserved seasonal yield ;
-
optimized refrigerant charge;
-
simplified maintenance (visible soldering, valve access).
The exterior cladding matches the color of the facade and the openings are sealed (impregnated foam + bulkhead) to prevent air infiltration and thermal bridges.
Condensation: gravity when possible
We favor a silent gravity discharge (controlled slope, anti-odor siphon if required). A condensate pump is only considered as a last resort — a source of noise and maintenance — when the architecture requires it.
Raised and protected condenser
On the balcony, the Sharp Eco Inverter condenser rests on a galvanized structure with elastomer pads. Objectives:
-
maintaining snow clearance (30–40 cm);
-
correct drainage of frost during defrosting;
-
reduction of solid-borne vibrations towards the slab.
We respect the clearances on the facade to guarantee the flow of the exchanger, despite the presence of the guardrail .
Power supply and electrical safety
An external disconnect box , visible and accessible, is connected to a dedicated circuit from the housing panel. We systematically check:
-
circuit breaker rating and cable cross- section ;
-
grounding ;
-
torque tightening and line continuity .
Why a Sharp wall-mounted heat pump here?
-
Heating and air conditioning in a single unit: ideal for a condo where the boiler or electric baseboards are not very flexible.
-
Inverter : fine modulation, stable temperature without overconsumption.
-
Air Quality : Sharp's proprietary Plasmacluster technology helps limit certain odors and particles at the indoor unit.
-
Quiet : low speeds really usable in the evening thanks to laminar blowing and the balanced turbine.
Sizing: aim right to gain comfort and economy
Accurate sizing takes precedence over the BTU race. We take stock of : surface area, orientation, glazing, infiltration, internal loads (appliances, occupants). In a condo dining and living room area like this, air conditioning needs generally hover around 9,000 to 12,000 BTUs , with a reserve for peaks (heat waves).
Our approach: the smallest power capable of covering the load, in order to maximize continuous operating time (better dehumidification , increased silence and improved COP ).
AirGreen Installation Methodology (Operational Summary)
-
Site protection : covers, corner/molding protection, markings.
-
Drilling and sheath : controlled slope, careful finish on the interior/exterior side.
-
Nitrogen bending & brazing : clean joints, limited oxides.
-
Nitrogen leak test (pressure scale) then deep vacuum (< 500 microns), stability tested.
-
Commissioning : valve openings, superheat/subcooling controls, compressor intensity, blowing temperature and difference (ΔT).
-
Customer training : use of modes , HVAC maintenance instructions, best practices in co-ownership.
-
File : certificate, photos, contact details for the annual visit .
Maintenance: gestures that prolong performance
-
Filters : rinse monthly in summer, quarterly in winter; replace if worn.
-
Outdoor battery : gentle rinse in spring; remove leaves, dust and frost.
-
Defrosting : monitor the drain in winter; avoid ice buildup under the condenser.
-
Annual AirGreen inspection : refrigeration and electrical checks, cleaning of internal turbines , checking of connection insulation and tightening of terminals .
Grants and eligibility in Greater Montreal
Recent high-efficiency wall-mounted heat pumps are often eligible for programs in Montreal , Laval , Longueuil , on the North Shore and the South Shore , subject to seasonal performance and cold weather capabilities . We validate the configuration (power, efficiency rating, low temperature operation) on a case-by-case basis and assist our clients in putting together their files .
Common Mistakes…and How We Avoid Them
-
Indoor unit too low : perceived airflow, dust, noise → high installation under cornice, controlled shutters .
-
Unnecessarily long refrigeration path : pressure losses → crossing behind the device , short and straight connections.
-
Systematic condensate pump : noise and maintenance → gravity evacuation prioritized.
-
Condenser on the slab : snow, frost, noise → raised base with pads .
-
Railing or wall less than 30–40 cm : air recirculation → offset and clearances validated in blowing/suction.
-
Shared electrical circuit : trips and risks → dedicated line and disconnection within range.
Customer feedback: immediate comfort and visual discretion
Upon commissioning, the temperature and, above all, the humidity in the dining-living area drop rapidly. The blowing does not affect the occupants at the table, the noise level remains contained, and the integration respects the aesthetics of the paneling and moldings. In winter, the machine provides effective backup ; the main system works less, for tangible savings .
