Installation of a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Orion XLTH wall-mounted heat pump in Vaudreuil-Dorion, Vaudreuil-Soulanges

A high wall-mounted installation that frees up floor space and protects the outdoor unit

For this project completed in Vaudreuil-Dorion, we had to integrate a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Orion XLTH ductless heat pump into an outdoor space that was already highly structured: a brick wall, closely spaced windows, a residential passageway, a soffit above the unit, and very limited space at ground level.

Rather than simply placing the outdoor unit on a slab or ground support, we chose an installation on metal wall brackets, directly on the masonry. The project photo clearly shows the result: the Fujitsu outdoor unit is mounted high above the passageway, with its electrical equipment accessible beneath the unit.

This configuration achieves several objectives at once. It preserves usable floor space, keeps the heat pump away from accumulating snow, and maintains sufficient clearance beneath the unit for the water produced during winter defrost cycles. However, it requires more precise planning than a conventional installation on a slab, particularly when working with a brick wall and several closely spaced architectural constraints.

A Fujitsu Orion XLTH designed for cold-climate heating

The Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Orion XLTH is part of Fujitsu’s single-zone H series. According to the manufacturer’s technical documentation provided for this installation, the range includes the 09KZAH1, 12KZAH1, 15KZAH1, 18KZAH1 and 24KZAH1 models and is designed to operate in heating mode down to -26 °C.

For a home in Vaudreuil-Dorion, this point is especially important. A ductless heat pump must not only provide effective cooling in July; it must also retain useful heating capacity when temperatures drop below freezing for several days.

Fujitsu’s documentation also highlights several features that are particularly well suited to our climate:

  • Inverter compressor that modulates its output according to demand;
  • R32 refrigerant;
  • base pan heater intended for very cold regions;
  • heating operation down to -26 °C;
  • low-noise outdoor operating mode;
  • built-in Wi-Fi connectivity;
  • the ENERGY STAR certification indicated for the models in this series;
  • several fan speeds and a quiet indoor mode.

In the photo of our installation in Vaudreuil-Dorion, the symbol R32 is also shown directly on the front panel of the outdoor unit.

Why wall mounting was particularly advantageous here

One of the first decisions in a wall-mounted heat pump project concerns the location of the outdoor unit.

In an open yard, a ground slab or raised support is often a good option. In a space like this, the situation is different. The outdoor unit is located between two openings, beneath an upper structure, and against a brick façade. The ground directly beneath the unit had to remain available.

We therefore made use of the vertical space.

The result visible in the photo is highly representative: the Fujitsu unit is mounted on two sturdy metal wall brackets, installed at a considerable height. The bottom of the cabinet remains completely clear, and the unit does not occupy the passageway.

Mounting on a brick wall requires proper preparation

Mounting a heat pump outdoor unit on a masonry façade does not mean simply adding a few screws to the brick.

The outdoor unit has significant weight and produces normal vibrations while the compressor and fan are operating. The supports must therefore be selected, positioned, and anchored appropriately.

For example, the Fujitsu specifications indicate that the outdoor units for the 09K, 12K, and 15K versions in this series weigh approximately 39 kg, or 86 lb, while the 18K and 24K models weigh approximately 53 kg, or 117 lb.

This is compounded by the forces transmitted to the supports during operation and by outdoor conditions. That is why we consider choosing the anchoring point an integral part of the HVAC installation, rather than a mere finishing detail.

The clearance beneath the unit becomes an advantage during defrost cycles

A heat pump operating in heating mode extracts heat from the outdoor air. When conditions are cold and humid, frost can form on the outdoor heat exchanger. The unit must then periodically perform a defrost cycle.

This process produces water.

When installed too close to the ground, this water can freeze beneath the heat pump and gradually form a significant buildup. The elevated mounting used here provides ample space beneath the cabinet, promoting better water management and reducing the risks associated with a unit installed directly in an area where snow accumulates.

The Fujitsu Orion XLTH also incorporates a base pan heater designed for extremely cold climate regions, according to Fujitsu documentation.

The equipment and installation method therefore work together: the manufacturer provides a unit designed for cold weather, while our job is to give it an outdoor environment compatible with that use.

A compact installation balancing architecture and technical requirements

This project also illustrates a common issue in the residential sectors of Vaudreuil-Dorion, Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore: the ideal location from a technical standpoint is not always a completely open space.

Here, the unit is located beneath an upper structure and near a brick wall return. This type of configuration requires considering the following simultaneously:

air circulation, so the unit can intake and discharge air properly;

the clearances specified by the manufacturer, particularly around the cabinet;

service access, essential for future troubleshooting or HVAC maintenance;

the refrigerant line routing between the indoor unit and the outdoor unit;

the electrical connection, which must remain organized and accessible;

defrost water management during the winter.

It is precisely in these more constrained installations that an HVAC contractor’s experience becomes important. Moving a heat pump a few dozen centimeters can sometimes solve one problem but create another: interference with a window, difficult access, unnecessarily long piping, or reduced service clearance.

The Fujitsu Orion XLTH technical details that really matter in the field

A product line whose capacity must be selected according to the home, not solely its square footage

The Fujitsu Orion XLTH family presented in the documentation includes several capacities. For rated cooling, Fujitsu announces:

  • 9,000 BTU/h for the 09K;
  • 12,000 BTU/h for the 12K;
  • 14,500 BTU/h for the 15K;
  • 18,000 BTU/h for the 18K;
  • 22,000 BTU/h for the 24K.

At rated heating capacity, the advertised values are respectively 12,000, 16,000, 18,000, 21,600, and 25,200 BTU/h.

The detailed nameplate of the unit installed in Vaudreuil-Dorion is not legible enough in this photo to identify its exact capacity with certainty. We therefore prefer not to arbitrarily assign a BTU rating to the installation.

This caution is important in the HVAC field: two outdoor units may look almost identical while requiring different piping dimensions, electrical protection, or installation conditions.

High efficiency levels depending on the selected capacity

The technical sheet for the Orion XLTH series shows particularly high TRÈS2/SEER2 ratings depending on the model:

  • 33,1 for the 09K;
  • 30,5 for the 12K;
  • 27,5 for the 15K;
  • 25,5 for the 18K;
  • 24,0 for the 24K.

The exact relevant value for a homeowner therefore depends on the combination actually installed.

One frequently misunderstood point should be emphasized: automatically choosing the heat pump with the highest number of BTUs is not necessarily advantageous. Proper sizing instead aims for a capacity suited to the home’s heat loss, insulation, number of floors, solar exposure, and air distribution.

An oversized system is not a universal solution.

Down to -26 °C: what this means in practical terms

The Orion XLTH lineup has an advertised heating operating range of -26 °C to 24 °C for the models presented in the brochure.

Fujitsu also publishes particularly interesting data on maintaining capacity in cold weather.

Depending on the version, the maximum available capacity at -21 °C represents between 95% and 154% of the reference rated capacity, while at -26 °C, the published values range from 80% to 127% depending on the model.

This shows why two heat pumps with a similar number of BTUs on their marketing sheet can perform very differently during a very cold day.

For our installations in Vaudreuil-Dorion and elsewhere in Greater Montreal, we therefore place great importance on low-temperature heating data, not just the nominal capacity displayed in large characters.

R32: a new generation of refrigerant at Fujitsu

The presence of the marking R32 is particularly visible in the photo of this installation.

In its documentation, Fujitsu compares the global warming potential of R32 with that of R410A: 675 for R32 versus 2,088 for R410A, which the manufacturer says represents a 68% reduction.

For the installer, the refrigerant change also means working with methods, tools, and procedures suited to the installed system. A heat pump should never be considered a simple household appliance that is mounted on the wall and plugged in.

The refrigeration circuit, evacuation, connections, line sizes, and commissioning all have a direct impact on installation reliability.

Pipe sizes are not identical across the entire range

Fujitsu’s documentation perfectly illustrates why we always check the model before preparing an installation:

  • 09K : 1/4 in. liquid and 3/8 in. gas;
  • 12K : 1/4 in. liquid and 3/8 in. gas;
  • 15K : 1/4 in. liquid and 1/2 in. gas;
  • 18K : 3/8 in. liquid and 5/8 in. gas;
  • 24K : 3/8 in. liquid and 5/8 in. gas.

This difference becomes particularly important when replacing an old wall-mounted heat pump. The mere fact that a set of lines is already in place does not automatically mean it is compatible with the new unit.

The electrical supply also varies by model

All versions in the series presented by Fujitsu operate at 208 to 230 V, 60 Hz, single-phase, but the specified circuit breaker rating varies.

The 09K and 12K models use a 15 A circuit breaker, while the 15K, 18K, and 24K models are specified at 20 A in the technical data sheet.

In our photo from Vaudreuil-Dorion, an outdoor electrical disconnect installed below the unit is also visible. Its presence provides an accessible disconnect point near the outdoor unit for service work.

Integrating this component is important for both safety and ease of future maintenance.

An indoor unit designed to operate quietly

Acoustic comfort plays a major role in choosing a wall-mounted heat pump, especially when the indoor unit is located in a living room, bedroom, or workspace.

Fujitsu states that the indoor sound level can go as low as 23 dB(A) in quiet mode for certain capacities in this series. Published outdoor levels are approximately between 46 and 50 dB(A), depending on the model and operating mode.

The heat pump also offers several fan speeds: automatic, high, medium-high, medium, medium-low, low, and quiet mode.

Inverter technology continuously adjusts the operating capacity to the room's needs rather than operating only in on-off cycles.

Integrated Wi-Fi and remote control

The Orion XLTH series also includes integrated Wi-Fi connectivity, with remote control and monitoring through the AIRSTAGE app according to Fujitsu documentation.

This feature is particularly useful for a home where occupants want to adjust the temperature before returning home, check the system's operation remotely, or manage periods of absence more easily.

Fujitsu also offers various optional interfaces and controllers, including for applications using wired controllers or certain integration protocols such as BACnet and Modbus.

Mistakes to avoid when installing a wall-mounted unit at an elevated height

This installation in Vaudreuil-Dorion is also a good example of what we monitor when an outdoor unit needs to be mounted at an elevated height.

Some of the mistakes we want to avoid include:

  1. Underestimate the weight and vibrations of the outdoor unit. The mounting must be suitable for the existing support structure.
  2. Place the unit too close to a ceiling or adjacent wall without taking the manufacturer's clearance requirements into account.
  3. Block access to the service panel with a permanent structure.
  4. Route the lines in an exposed or disorganized manner, increasing the risk of damage.
  5. Install the unit too low in an area where snow accumulates.
  6. Reuse old piping without verifying its dimensions.
  7. Choose the capacity based solely on the home's square footage.
  8. Neglecting defrost water management is particularly problematic when the unit is located above a passageway.

In this project, the elevated installation therefore provides an obvious advantage, but in return it requires greater precision when securing the equipment and organizing the peripheral components.

A clean installation that remains accessible after we leave

A successful project should remain logical for many years after installation.

On this project, the outdoor unit remains clearly accessible, the disconnect switch is positioned nearby, and the metal brackets provide substantial clearance beneath the cabinet. The AirGreen sticker visible on the unit also allows the homeowner to quickly identify the company responsible for the installation if service is needed.

We place great importance on accessibility. A heat pump can operate without problems for a long time, but it will eventually need to be cleaned, inspected, or diagnosed. Equipment installed in a position that is impossible to reach makes each of these interventions unnecessarily complex.

A solution suited to homes in Vaudreuil-Dorion and Greater Montreal

This Fujitsu Orion XLTH heat pump installation in Vaudreuil-Dorion is a good example of the type of project where site details matter just as much as the equipment specifications.

Choosing equipment designed for low-temperature heating is important, but its location is equally important. In this specific case, the wall-mounted installation keeps the passage clear, moves the outdoor unit away from accumulated snow, and creates significant space beneath the unit for defrost management.

The Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Orion XLTH series adds operation down to -26 °C, an inverter compressor, a base pan heater, R32 refrigerant, built-in Wi-Fi, and high efficiency ratings depending on the selected capacity.

For our teams, the true quality of a HVAC installation in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, the South Shore, or Vaudreuil-Dorion is measured as much by what the homeowner sees on installation day as by how the system will operate five or ten winters later.
