Installation of a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump in Outremont
Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump installed in Outremont: discreet design, quiet, R-32 efficiency and gravity drain. AirGreen — HVAC experts for Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, North Shore and South Shore, with support for subsidies and maintenance.

In summer, the outdoor unit rejects the house's heat outside.
Generic illustration of this type of installation, not a survey of this job site. Tap a number.
Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.
The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.
Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.
A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.
The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.
On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.
The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.
A careful integration that transforms the comfort of a Montreal condo, while reducing energy bills and ambient noise.
Project context and client objectives
In Outremont, a couple working from home were looking for a quiet, cold- efficient, and stylish HVAC solution for a living room that opened onto an office area. We recommended a Sharp ZU1 wall-mounted heat pump (R-32 refrigerant) , sized to maintain a stable temperature in a multi-use space, with absolute priority given to silence (very discreet interior head) and air quality.
Why the Sharp ZU1 for this condo?
Four-season performance
-
Reliable heating in cold weather, with capacity maintenance at low temperatures (extreme cold operating range typical of new generation R-32).
-
High efficiency thanks to the DC inverter: the machine modulates finely and avoids energy-consuming on/off cycles.
-
R-32 refrigerant with a lower GWP than R-410A, part of a sustainable modernization approach.
Silence and design
-
The interior head with its white facade and simple lines blends perfectly into a contemporary decor (framed works, ceiling with recessed lighting).
-
Night mode and fan modulation reduce perceived noise, ideal for video conferencing and rest.
Indoor air quality
-
Multi-layer filtration and automatic dehumidification functions in summer.
-
Precise temperature and humidity management to limit uncomfortable variations in open rooms.
Sizing and capacity selection
Our load calculations (envelope, orientation, glazing, infiltration) led to a selection of 12,000 to 15,000 BTU for the day zone. This range covers the actual need while leaving room for seasonal peaks. On similar projects in Greater Montreal, we observe that oversizing a wall-mounted heat pump degrades comfort (short cycles, drying), hence the importance of precise sizing.
Installation route: precise, clean, durable
Implantation of the inner head
-
High position centered under a ceiling recess: optimal clearance for air intake and diffusion, without blowing directly onto the workspace.
-
Anchoring on rigid structure, checked at the level to avoid any vibration noise.
Drilling and refrigeration connections
-
Single drilling with slight slope for gravity flow of condensates (avoids the pump and its noise).
-
Continuous insulated refrigeration lines on 3/8”–1/4” (depending on capacity), brazed and nitrogen pressure tested to ensure leak-tightness.
-
High vacuum at the micron pump < 500 microns, maintained under controlled vacuum, then opening of the valves on the condenser side.
-
Discreet white interior capping at the exit of the drilling, invisible connections in the living room.
Condensate management
-
Gravity drainage, slope verified, anti-siphonage guaranteed. This option minimizes maintenance and eliminates any risk of pump noise.
Electrical integration
-
Dedicated circuit with compliant circuit breaker and external disconnect (out of scope of this interior view), shielded communication cable between units, polarities controlled.
Finishes
-
Cleaning of the site, leveling of the wall if necessary, complete tests in heating and cooling modes, then calibration of the parameters (sweeping, eco setpoint, timing).
Measurable outcome for occupants
-
Stable comfort at 22–23°C without drafts.
-
Very low noise in auto speed: comfortable video calls from the living room desk.
-
In summer, lower humidity and reduced heat peaks in the late afternoon.
-
Anticipated reduction in annual consumption compared to an old electric baseboard heater + window air conditioner combo.
Daily usage tips
-
Auto mode with seasonal settings (20–21°C winter, 23–24°C summer) to maximize economy.
-
Shutter oriented slightly towards the ceiling to promote induction and homogenize the open room.
-
Dehumidification function for humid July/August days to avoid discomfort without overcooling.
-
Clean filters every 4–6 weeks during periods of heavy use.
Preventive maintenance by AirGreen
Annual HVAC maintenance extends lifespan and maintains performance:
-
Deep cleaning of the evaporator and fan, drainage test.
-
Checking of refrigeration parameters , insulation and supports.
-
Updated user settings for upcoming seasons.
This maintenance is part of our service plans for Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, North Shore and South Shore .
Grants and Compliance
Recent R-32 wall-mounted heat pumps , with high efficiencies and cold weather performance, may be eligible for provincial and municipal grant programs. We will work with you to assess eligibility (model, capacity, certifications) and handle the paperwork to expedite the process.
Good practices and pitfalls to avoid
-
Avoid line extensions without calculation: they harm performance.
-
Refuse a condensate passage without a slope: source of overflows and odors.
-
Do not stick your head under a narrow ceiling drop: this restricts the airflow.
-
Always check access for future maintenance (clearance and access to filters).
And if your space looks like this…
This type of integration is ideal for:
-
Condos and plexes with open rooms and sleek finishes.
-
Home offices where silence is crucial.
-
Montreal buildings with interior walls providing a direct path for connections, allowing for a simple and reliable gravity drain .

Data read live from the airgreen.ca page of each size (NEEP / AHRI certified performance). When the title names the installed size, it is highlighted; otherwise the whole range is shown. The aid shown is today’s, using Hydro-Québec’s rule ($120 per 1,000 BTU/h at −8 °C); amounts quoted in the article date from its publication. Only Hydro-Québec confirms the assistance granted.
And at your place?
Two quick checks with real numbers: what heat costs, and what your current heaters add up to in BTU/h.
Baseboards and electric furnaces turn 1 kWh of electricity into 1 kWh of heat. A heat pump delivers more: that is its COP. At Hydro-Québec’s rate D (11.142¢/kWh above 40 kWh a day, since 1 April 2026):
Hydro-Québec: a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months.
Estimate per kWh of heat, at the chosen temperature, using the certified COP from the product page. Taxes, access charge and backup heat not included.
Conversion: 1 W = 3.412 BTU/h. An indication, not a load calculation: baseboards and furnaces are often stronger than the real need, and they can stay as backup. AirGreen confirms the capacity on site.
