For this project carried out in Anjou, in eastern Montreal, we installed a Fujitsu Aquila XLTH dual-zone heat pump to provide more precise heating and cooling control in two distinct areas of the building. The goal was not simply to add a wall-mounted unit: we had to design an installation capable of operating efficiently during Montreal’s cold periods while respecting the particular configuration of the brick façade, the location of the openings, and the route of the refrigerant lines.

The installation photograph shows an R32-refrigerant Fujitsu AIRSTAGE outdoor unit, mounted on sturdy wall brackets above ground level. This location provides greater protection against snow accumulation, ice, debris, and moisture that may be present near the foundation.

Near the unit, we also find:

According to the Fujitsu technical documents provided for this installation, the outdoor units in the series are available in rated capacities of 18,000, 24,000, 36,000, and 45,000 BTU/h. Depending on the model selected, an outdoor unit can support two to five indoor units. Models designed for cold-climate heating can operate down to approximately -26 °C, while each indoor unit retains its own controller.

The exact outdoor model and its rated capacity are not clear enough in the photograph to be confirmed with certainty. At AirGreen, we avoid inferring capacity solely from the cabinet dimensions. Two visually similar outdoor units may have different capacities, connections, and approved combinations.

Proper selection must be based on several factors:

  • the area of each zone;
  • ceiling height;
  • the quality of the insulation;
  • the number and size of windows;
  • sun exposure;
  • air infiltration;
  • the layout of the rooms;
  • internal loads;
  • the heating capacity required at low temperatures.

A combined capacity that must be calculated methodically

In a dual-zone system, you cannot simply add two wall-mounted units arbitrarily. The combinations must be approved by the manufacturer.

For example, the 18,000 BTU/h Fujitsu outdoor unit from the H series can be connected to two indoor units in several approved combinations, including:

  • 7,000 + 7,000 BTU/h;
  • 7,000 + 9,000 BTU/h;
  • 7,000 + 12,000 BTU/h;
  • 9,000 + 9,000 BTU/h;
  • 9,000 + 12,000 BTU/h;
  • 12,000 + 12,000 BTU/h.

Some combinations allow a total indoor capacity greater than the outdoor unit's rated capacity. This flexibility is useful when the two zones do not reach their maximum load at the same time. However, a combined indoor capacity greater than 100% does not increase the outdoor unit's actual maximum output.

In other words, connecting two indoor units totaling 24,000 BTU/h to an 18,000 BTU/h outdoor unit does not turn the latter into a 24,000 BTU/h unit. The available capacity is modulated and distributed among the zones according to demand.

That is why we analyze the load of each room, usage habits, and the likely simultaneity of demand before proposing a combination. An undersized system may lack capacity during very cold weather. An oversized system may lead to short cycling, less precise humidity control, and less consistent comfort.

The R32 refrigerant visible on the outdoor unit

The label R32 is clearly visible on the equipment installed in Anjou. This refrigerant is used in several recent generations of heat pumps because of its thermodynamic properties and lower global warming potential than some older refrigerants.

However, its use requires rigorous installation practices. R32 is classified as A2L, meaning it is a low-toxicity, moderately flammable refrigerant. The work must therefore be carried out using the appropriate tools, in accordance with the manufacturer's procedures and applicable requirements.

During commissioning, our technicians pay particular attention to the following steps:

  1. checking pipe diameters;
  2. making flared connections at the recommended torque;
  3. leak testing;
  4. vacuum evacuation;
  5. confirmation that the vacuum is stable;
  6. controlled opening of the service valves;
  7. checking operating temperatures and pressures;
  8. checking the drainage of each indoor unit;
  9. testing in heating and cooling modes;
  10. verification of communication between the units.

A high-end heat pump that is not properly evacuated or connected can lose a significant portion of its reliability. Residual moisture in the refrigeration circuit can contribute to acid formation, oil contamination, and compressor problems.

Wall-mounted installation on a brick façade

The exterior wall of this building consists of brick above a concrete foundation. The presence of a vertical metal structure near the unit required careful planning to avoid obstacles and maintain the necessary clearances.

We positioned the outdoor unit beneath the brick section, on the foundation, using brackets designed to support the weight of the equipment. This method offers several advantages in an area such as Anjou:

  • it keeps the unit above the snow.
  • it facilitates access for HVAC maintenance;
  • it avoids taking up a significant portion of the ground;
  • it reduces the risk of movement caused by freezing;
  • it allows a more direct line route;
  • it facilitates the drainage of defrost water.

The mounting points must be suitable for the load-bearing material. Mounting only in the brick veneer, without structural validation, can cause movement, vibrations, or progressive deterioration of the masonry.

To limit this risk, we check:

  • the absence of direct contact between the lines and the structure;
  • the presence of space around the pipes;
  • the stability of the exterior covering;

The refrigerant lines and communication cables are grouped at the outdoor unit outlet. Their route is protected by a white covering that improves both the installation’s durability and appearance.

This covering notably protects:

  • the pipe insulation against UV rays;
  • the cables against the elements;
  • the lines against light impacts;
  • wall penetrations against water infiltration;
  • the entire assembly against premature deterioration.

In a dual-zone system, each indoor unit has its own refrigerant circuit connected to the outdoor unit. Correct circuit identification is essential. Reversed electrical or refrigerant connections can cause communication errors, inconsistent operation, or incorrect refrigerant distribution.

We therefore identify the circuits, confirm the correspondence between each outdoor port and each indoor unit, then test the two zones separately and simultaneously.

Keep the outdoor unit clear

In winter, remove snow buildup around the unit without striking the coil. The front of the fan and the sides of the unit must remain clear.

During a defrost cycle, water may drain beneath the heat pump. This flow is normal. The space beneath the unit must therefore remain accessible to prevent ice buildup from reaching the base of the unit.

Avoid constant temperature changes
