Technical commissioning at the heart of a multi-zone installation carried out in an already occupied outdoor space
At Pointe-Claire, in Montréal's West Island, we installed a triple-zone Hitachi airHome Multi multi-zone heat pump to provide heating and cooling for three separate spaces from a single outdoor unit. The project involved a challenge clearly visible in the site photo: the chosen location already contained another air-conditioning unit, several lines, electrical connections, and a facade made of brick and concrete foundation.
In this type of configuration, success depends on more than just choosing the heat pump. We must arrange each component so that the new system operates properly without interfering with the existing equipment, blocking access to the service valves, or creating a disorganized network of lines along the building.
The photo shows the Hitachi airHome outdoor unit installed on a metal wall bracket above ground level. It also shows an important step in our work: commissioning the refrigerant circuit, with a manifold and its pressure gauges connected to the service ports.
This stage of the project is rarely visible once the installation is complete, but it is crucial. A heat pump can be perfectly level, securely mounted, and aesthetically well integrated, yet still have problems if the refrigerant circuit has not been prepared, tested, and commissioned according to proper procedures.
Why a triple-zone heat pump was suitable for this Pointe-Claire property
A triple-zone heat pump connects three indoor units to a single outdoor compressor. Each indoor unit generally serves a specific room, floor, or section of the house.
This configuration is particularly useful in Pointe-Claire homes, where you often find:
- a relatively open ground floor;
- enclosed bedrooms upstairs;
- a basement with a different thermal load;
- extensions built at different times;
- areas that the air from a single wall-mounted unit cannot reach effectively.
An indoor unit installed in the living room can significantly improve comfort in the main living area, but it cannot effectively push air through several hallways and closed doors. By dividing the home into three zones, we bring heating and cooling closer to the spaces that are actually occupied.
Each indoor unit can have its own:
- setpoint;
- fan speed;
- schedule;
- louver adjustment;
- dehumidification mode;
- on/off control.
This makes it possible to reduce the use of an unoccupied bedroom while maintaining comfort in the main living area.
A single outdoor compressor to limit visual impact
The visible space in the photograph was already occupied by another outdoor unit. Installing three single-zone heat pumps would have required much more space on the façade and multiplied the electrical circuits, brackets, and maintenance requirements.
A multi-zone system instead groups three indoor circuits on a single outdoor unit. This approach reduces:
- the number of compressors around the building;
- visual impact;
- the number of brackets;
- the required clearances;
- the number of disconnect switches;
- areas exposed to vibrations.
However, a multi-zone system is not automatically preferable in every home. It should be selected when the room layout, required capacity, and installation conditions genuinely justify using a shared compressor.
An elevated wall-mounted installation suited to Montreal winters
The Hitachi unit was installed on a metal wall bracket secured to the building structure. It is well above the ground, offering several advantages in Pointe-Claire’s climatic conditions.
This elevation helps limit the risks associated with:
- accumulated snow;
- ice;
- leaves;
- splashing;
- rainwater;
- dirt splashed up from the ground;
- drainage obstruction during defrosting.
In heating mode, the outdoor coil can accumulate frost. The heat pump then initiates a defrost cycle, which produces water beneath the unit. If the unit is installed too close to the ground, this water can freeze around the cabinet and create significant buildup.
The wall bracket keeps the space beneath the unit clear. It also facilitates access to the valves, as shown in the photograph, where our measuring equipment is connected directly to the side of the unit.
Managing vibrations on a residential façade
A wall-mounted unit must be installed carefully to limit vibration transmission to the structure. The compressor and fan create slight mechanical movements during operation. If the support is improperly sized or the mounting points are inadequate, these vibrations may be felt indoors.
We specifically check:
- the rigidity of the support;
- the level of the unit;
- the strength of the supporting material;
- the presence of suitable support points;
- the tightening of the bolts;
- no rigid contact between the lines and the masonry.
The refrigerant lines must not be taut either. A controlled bend near the valves allows small movements to be absorbed without placing constant stress on the fittings.
Controlled coexistence with the existing equipment
The photograph shows another outdoor unit installed to the left of the new Hitachi unit. Such close proximity requires careful planning.
The two units must retain:
- sufficient airflow;
- service access;
- clear separation of their circuits;
- identifiable disconnect switches;
- protected lines;
- space to clean the coils.
We must also prevent the air discharged by one unit from being immediately drawn in by the other. Air recirculation can increase the temperature around the coils during cooling or impair heating performance in winter.
The front clearance and orientation must therefore be assessed based on all the equipment present, not just the new unit.
The Hitachi airHome Multi triple-zone system: capacity, efficiency, and commissioning
The outdoor model designed for three indoor units
In the Hitachi airHome Multi lineup, the model designed to accommodate three indoor connections is the RAM-G24N3HAA. Its rated capacity is 24,000 BTU/h for cooling and 24,000 BTU/h for heating.
With ductless indoor units, its cooling capacity can modulate approximately from 7,000 to 28,000 BTU/h, while its heating capacity can vary from 9,000 to 26,200 BTU/h, depending on demand and operating conditions.
This modulation is made possible by Inverter technology. The compressor adjusts its speed according to the demand from the three zones rather than operating only at full capacity.
According to the Hitachi technical data sheet, the RAM-G24N3HAA can achieve a TRÉS2 of 22.0 in a ductless configuration, with a CPSC2 of 7.8 in Region 5. The system uses R32 refrigerant, and its heating range extends down to an outdoor temperature of -20 °C.
What a 24,000 BTU/h capacity in a three-zone system really means
The 24,000 BTU/h capacity belongs to the outdoor unit. It does not indicate that each indoor unit can simultaneously deliver its maximum rated capacity.
In a multi-zone system, the compressor distributes its capacity among the units requesting heating or cooling.
For example, if only one zone is operating, much of the available capacity can be directed to that unit, within the system’s limits. If all three zones demand substantial heating at the same time, the total capacity is shared.
The three indoor units should therefore be selected based on:
- the thermal load of each room;
- probable simultaneous demand;
- the combination authorized by Hitachi;
- insulation;
- solar exposure;
- the number and type of windows;
- of natural air circulation.
Adding together three indoor capacities without analyzing the outdoor unit’s capacity can lead to unrealistic expectations.
Cold-weather heating in Pointe-Claire
The airHome Multi heat pump can operate in heating mode down to -20 °C, but its available capacity decreases as the outdoor temperature drops.
For the RAM-G24N3HAA model, Hitachi indicates a maximum heating capacity of approximately:
- 18,500 BTU/h at -15 °C;
- 13,000 BTU/h at -20 °C.
This information is more useful than simply stating “operates down to -20 °C.” It helps determine whether the heat pump can cover the building’s load on its own or whether a supplemental heating source must remain available on the coldest days.
In many homes in Pointe-Claire, electric baseboard heaters can be retained as supplemental heating. The heat pump then provides a significant portion of the seasonal heating, while the electric elements meet demand during cold snaps.
Three independent zones, but one shared mode
The three indoor units can have different temperatures and fan speeds. Some can even be turned off while the others continue operating.
However, the units connected to the same compressor must use a compatible mode.
In summer, the system can operate in:
- cooling;
- dehumidification;
- ventilation.
In winter, it can operate in:
- heating;
- ventilation.
One zone cannot normally request heating while another simultaneously requests cooling.
This characteristic should be understood before purchase. It is especially relevant in spring and fall, when some rooms may be warmed by the sun while others remain cool.
What the gauges show in the photograph
The manifold visible in the image is connected to the refrigerant circuit during a verification or commissioning step. The gauges allow the technician to monitor certain system pressures depending on the operation being performed.
On a triple-zone system, commissioning requires particular attention because the installation has several refrigerant branches.
Our checks include, in particular:
- identifying each pair of lines;
- checking the flared connections;
- tightening to the proper torque;
- leak testing;
- evacuation;
- checking vacuum stability;
- opening the service valves;
- starting the three units;
- communication validation;
- monitoring system behavior.
The photograph also shows adapters and fittings installed on the service ports. With R32 refrigerant, we must use tools and procedures compatible with the refrigerant and the manufacturer’s requirements.
Why evacuation is essential
Newly installed lines initially contain air and may contain some moisture. These elements must be removed before the outdoor unit’s refrigerant is released into the circuit.
Proper evacuation helps eliminate:
- air;
- water vapor;
- non-condensable gases;
- residual moisture in the lines.
If this step is shortened or performed incorrectly, moisture can react with the compressor oil and impair system operation. The pressures can also become unstable.
We therefore do not consider evacuation a formality. It is an integral part of the system’s durability.
The three refrigerant circuits visible on the side of the unit
The triple-zone model has three liquid connections 1/4 po and three gas connections 3/8 po on the outdoor unit side.
In the photograph, several insulated lines are connected to the vertically arranged valves. Each pair must correspond to an indoor unit and its communication circuit.
Reversing the lines and cables can result in:
- an improper response from the units;
- communication errors;
- diagnostic codes;
- inconsistent operation;
- significant time lost during commissioning.
To avoid these errors, we identify the connections during installation and verify them before startup.
Piping length and installation flexibility
The RAM-G24N3HAA technical sheet specifies a maximum total piping length of approximately 200 feet, or 60 meters.
The other specified limits include:
- up to approximately 82 feet between the outdoor unit and each indoor unit;
- a maximum total height of 66 feet;
- a minimum total length of 16 feet;
- a maximum elevation difference of 16 feet between the indoor units.
These possibilities make the system suitable for homes with multiple levels. They do not mean that the lines can be installed without planning.
Each additional foot can affect:
- refrigerant charge;
- heat loss;
- installation time;
- the amount of outdoor protection;
- oil return;
- the project cost.
A well-designed route avoids unnecessary detours while respecting the building’s structure.
Electrical supply and disconnect switch
The RAM-G24N3HAA operates at 208-230 V, single-phase, 60 Hz. The technical documentation specifies a minimum circuit ampacity of 19 A and maximum overcurrent protection of 35 A.
The final selection must always be confirmed using the nameplate of the installed unit.
A proper electrical installation includes:
- a dedicated circuit;
- a compliant circuit breaker;
- a properly sized cable;
- grounding;
- an accessible outdoor disconnect switch;
- weatherproof connections.
On this Pointe-Claire project, the electrical components also had to be organized among the equipment already installed on the wall.
Selecting the indoor units for three zones
The airHome Multi range can accommodate several types of indoor units:
- airHome 400 wall-mounted units;
- airHome 650 wall-mounted units;
- floor consoles;
- ducted units;
- mini-cassettes.
Available capacities vary by model, generally from 7,000 to 24,000 BTU/h.
For three zones, it is possible to combine different formats. A wall-mounted unit can serve the living room, another a bedroom, while a floor console or ducted unit may suit a third zone with particular constraints.
The choice depends in particular on:
- the wall space;
- the ceiling height;
- the desired sound level;
- the drainage location;
- aesthetics;
- the required airflow;
- the shape of the room.
FrostWash, Mold Guard, and filtration
Some compatible indoor units integrate FrostWash technology, which uses a freeze-and-thaw cycle to help clean the coil.
The Mold Guard function circulates air after certain periods of cooling or dehumidification to dry the internal components for approximately 60 minutes.
Depending on the model selected, the units may also offer:
- a PM2.5 activated carbon filter;
- a ViroSense S filter;
- a motion detector;
- the Smart Eco function;
- automatic shutoff;
- the optional airCloud Go interface.
The airCloud Go app allows certain functions to be controlled remotely and operation to be scheduled. However, each unit must be equipped with the required accessories.
Incentive eligibility: always verify the exact combination
Hitachi documentation indicates that the airHome Multi series is eligible for most provincial heat pump incentives.
Actual eligibility must nevertheless be verified based on:
- the outdoor model;
- the indoor models;
- the certified combination;
- the AHRI reference number;
- the current program;
- the building type;
- the capacity recognized by the program.
We therefore avoid promising an amount based solely on the series name. The exact combination must be confirmed before presenting a rebate estimate.
The mistakes we aim to avoid
Installing the pipes without identification
Three very similar circuits can easily be confused. Each pipe and cable must be identified before connection.
Leaving the insulation exposed
Outdoor insulation can deteriorate under UV rays. It must be protected with a suitable covering or pipe cover.
Placing the unit too close to nearby equipment
Insufficient clearance can restrict airflow and make maintenance difficult.
Neglecting wall-mount vibrations
Improper fastening can transmit vibrations to the house structure.
Omitting the load calculation
Three zones do not automatically mean that a 24,000 BTU/h heat pump is suitable. The building’s actual load must guide the selection.
Check a single indoor unit
During commissioning, each zone must be tested separately and then while operating simultaneously with the others.
An HVAC installation suited to the Pointe-Claire context
This project shows that an HVAC installation in Pointe-Claire can require a great deal of coordination, even when the outdoor unit occupies a relatively compact area.
We had to integrate the Hitachi heat pump near an existing appliance, organize several refrigerant lines, maintain access to the service ports, and install the compressor at an appropriate height for winter conditions.
The presence of the pressure gauges in the photograph also reminds us that an installation is not limited to its final appearance. Checking the refrigeration circuit, pulling a vacuum, identifying the branches, and testing all three zones are essential to the system’s operation.
We apply this same level of care to our installations in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore, adapting each project to the type of wall, the number of floors, and the space actually available.
Hitachi airHome Multi Warranty and Maintenance
The Hitachi brochure presents a standard warranty of seven years on the compressor and five years on parts.
For eligible residential installations, online registration may provide a ten-year extended warranty on the compressor and a ten-year warranty on parts. An enhanced option may also be available according to the applicable terms.
The owner should keep:
- the invoice;
- model numbers;
- serial numbers;
- the commissioning date;
- proof of registration;
- warranty documents.
HVAC maintenance includes cleaning the filters, inspecting the drains, clearing the outdoor unit, and periodically checking the coils.
Because the unit is installed near another system, it is also important to keep the space between the units clear of leaves and debris to preserve airflow and technical access.
