A Fujitsu Altair 700 installation carefully integrated into a room where every inch of wall space mattered
At Les Cèdres, we installed a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Altair 700 wall-mounted heat pump in a room with an interior layout that required precise planning. The project photo shows a large window on the left, a wall covered with geometric wallpaper, a ceiling with molding, and a relatively limited area available for accommodating the indoor unit.
Our objective was clear: position the heat pump high enough to promote good air distribution while maintaining consistent spacing from the ceiling, window, and decorative wall finish.
The result is a compact, discreet installation. The Fujitsu AIRSTAGE unit is placed in the upper section of the wall, near the corner of the room, without encroaching on the window frame. Despite the wallpaper's striking pattern, the white unit remains visually understated and blends naturally into the space.
This type of project reflects our approach at AirGreen: we do not choose the location of a wall-mounted heat pump simply because a wall appears to be clear. We consider the room's complete geometry, airflow, the structure, the piping route, future access to the unit, and how the system will integrate with the existing décor.
Working near a corner without compromising airflow
Installing a heat pump near a corner can be very effective, but only when clearances are carefully considered.
In this installation in Les Cèdres, the unit is positioned in the upper section of the wall, but far enough from immediate obstacles to allow air to leave the unit and enter the room.
A location too close to a side wall can sometimes limit air distribution or make certain service procedures more difficult. Conversely, unnecessarily moving the unit toward the center of the wall could have encroached further on the visual area above the window and complicated the technical routing.
We therefore sought a practical compromise between:
- air distribution in the room;
- clearance from the ceiling;
- space from the adjacent wall;
- proximity to the window;
- accessibility for filter cleaning;
- duct routing;
- integration with the existing interior finish.
This positioning work is one of the most important steps in a well-executed HVAC installation.
A heat pump that blends into an already finished interior
The wallpaper visible behind the unit makes this installation particularly interesting.
When a room is already finished, we must work while minimizing visible interventions as much as possible. A wall-mounted heat pump nevertheless requires secure mounting, the routing of refrigerant lines, a drain, and the connections needed for the system to operate.
In a project like this, precision during layout is essential.
A slightly tilted, misaligned unit or one placed too close to trim becomes much more noticeable against a repeating geometric pattern. The wall itself almost acts as a reference grid.
The final positioning of the Fujitsu Altair 700 remains clean and logical despite this visual constraint.
Why the Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Altair 700 is well suited to this type of residential project
A series available in 9,000 and 12,000 BTU
The Fujitsu documentation provided for this installation presents two models from the Altair 700 series:
09KMAS1 – 9,000 BTU/h
12KMAS1 – 12,000 BTU/h
The model combinations are:
- ASUH09KMAS indoors with AOUH09KMAS1 outdoors;
- ASUH12KMAS indoors with AOUH12KMAS1 outdoors.
The indoor photograph does not allow us to read the unit’s nameplate. Therefore, based on the image alone, we cannot confirm whether this specific installation uses the 9,000- or 12,000-BTU capacity.
This distinction is important: we avoid arbitrarily identifying a capacity based on the cabinet size when the manufacturer uses a similar appearance for several capacities.
Dimensions that are particularly practical in a space with limited wall area
Both Altair 700 versions use a compact indoor unit measuring approximately:
- 32 13/16 in. wide;
- 10 5/8 in. high;
- 8 3/4 in. deep;
- for a weight of approximately 22 lb.
This format is particularly useful in a room like the one in this project in Les Cèdres.
The unit can be installed high on the wall without taking up a disproportionate amount of space. Its low height of 10 5/8 in. also makes projects easier when the space between a window and the ceiling becomes a determining factor.
It is often a detail that completely changes a project’s feasibility.
Performance that goes far beyond the simple BTU count
The 9,000-BTU 09KMAS1 model offers a rated cooling capacity of 9,000 BTU/h, but its actual operating range extends from 3,100 to 12,100 BTU/h.
In heating mode, its rated capacity is 12,000 BTU/h, with modulation from 2,800 to 14,500 BTU/h.
The model 12KMAS1 offers, for its part:
- 12,000 BTU/h of nominal cooling;
- cooling modulation from 3,100 to 13,800 BTU/h;
- 14,000 BTU/h of nominal heating;
- a heating range of 2,800 to 15,000 BTU/h.
These ranges show why Inverter technology plays such an important role in comfort.
A heat pump should not operate continuously at maximum capacity. It must be able to reduce its output when demand decreases in order to maintain a more stable temperature.
Inverter technology that responds to the room’s actual needs
The Fujitsu Altair 700 series uses an Inverter compressor.
In practice, this means that the system can adjust its output based on the difference between the indoor temperature and the requested setpoint.
When it is very hot, the heat pump increases its output. Once the target temperature is nearly reached, it can slow down.
For a homeowner, this modulation can help:
- reduce temperature fluctuations;
- limit on-off cycles;
- improve comfort;
- reduce unnecessarily aggressive operating periods;
- better adapt electricity consumption to actual needs.
This type of operation is particularly beneficial in bedrooms, living rooms, and spaces where consistent comfort is desired rather than a succession of periods that are too cold followed by periods that are too warm.
An SEER2 of up to 30.0
The Fujitsu specifications indicate an SEER2 of 30.0 for the 9,000 BTU model and 27.5 for the 12,000 BTU model.
In heating mode, the HSPF2 Region V is listed as:
- 9,9 for the 09KMAS1;
- 8,5 for the 12KMAS1.
The nominal COP2 reaches 4.64 and 4.32, respectively.
For homeowners comparing multiple heating and cooling systems in Les Cèdres, these indicators provide a much more useful analysis than simply comparing the purchase price.
Seasonal efficiency directly affects the amount of electricity required over the course of the months.
Heating down to -15 °C
The Altair 700 series is designed to operate in heating mode down to -15 °C.
The heating range indicated by Fujitsu is from -15 °C to 24 °C, while the cooling range extends from -10 °C to 50 °C.
This data must always be interpreted in the context of the building.
A heat pump capable of operating at -15 °C is not automatically sufficient as the sole heating source for all Quebec properties.
Sizing must account for the building’s heat losses, insulation, windows, floor area, air volumes, and any supplemental heating source when necessary.
Very quiet indoor operation
Fujitsu indicates an indoor sound level as low as 19 dB(A) in cooling mode and 21 dB(A) in heating mode in quiet mode.
At low speed, the values are 30/33 dB(A), at medium speed 35/38 dB(A), and at high speed 40/42 dB(A) in cooling/heating mode.
This feature becomes especially important when the unit is installed in a bedroom, living room, or workspace.
A heat pump can offer excellent energy efficiency, but if its sound level becomes bothersome in everyday use, actual comfort is reduced.
Four fan speeds plus automatic mode
The Fujitsu Altair 700 offers four fan speed levels in addition to an automatic mode.
In cooling mode, Fujitsu indicates an airflow rate of up to 400 ft³/min at high speed, compared with approximately 324 ft³/min at medium speed, 253 ft³/min at low speed, and 153 ft³/min in quiet mode.
This airflow control makes it possible to adapt air circulation to the way the room is used.
For rapid cooling, a high speed can be useful. Once the desired temperature is reached, automatic mode or a lower speed allows quieter operation.
High placement promotes cooling
In this installation in Les Cèdres, the indoor unit is installed very high on the wall.
This positioning makes sense for a wall-mounted system.
Warm air naturally rises. In summer, the heat pump can therefore draw in the warm air accumulated in the upper part of the room, cool it, and then redistribute it throughout the occupied space.
The Altair 700 series’ automatic vertical louver also helps direct the airflow.
The goal is not simply to produce cold air, but to distribute it where it actually improves comfort.
Pay particular attention to the clearance below the ceiling
The photo shows that the unit was installed in an area relatively close to the ceiling.
This situation requires precise measurements.
The unit must maintain the required clearance for air intake and panel opening during servicing. The installation should never be compressed against the ceiling simply to gain a few inches.
We also verify that the unit can be properly cleaned after installation.
The Altair 700 filters are washable, which means the owner must be able to open the unit and remove them periodically.
The same refrigerant piping for both capacities
The 9,000 and 12,000 BTU models both use:
1/4 in. liquid side
3/8 in. gas side.
The minimum piping length is 10 feet.
Fujitsu allows up to 66 feet of piping, with a maximum vertical difference of 49 feet. The documentation also indicates a factory charge covering up to 49 feet.
This flexibility is very useful when it is not possible to install the outdoor unit directly behind the interior wall.
In an existing property, we often have to work around windows, foundations, access points, balconies, or exterior structures.
The piping route must therefore be planned before drilling.
Why you should never automatically keep an old refrigerant line
When replacing a heat pump, some homeowners want to reuse the existing lines to reduce the amount of work.
This may be possible in certain projects, but never without verification.
We must confirm:
- the diameter of each line;
- their condition;
- the quality of the insulation;
- their length;
- their compatibility with the new equipment;
- their cleanliness;
- the absence of damage or crushing.
With the Altair 700, the required dimensions are clearly 1/4 in. and 3/8 in..
Installing a new heat pump on unsuitable piping can compromise the operation of an otherwise new system.
R-32: the next generation used by the Altair 700
The Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Altair 700 operates with R-32 refrigerant.
According to Fujitsu documentation, R-32 has a global warming potential of 675, compared with 2,088 for R-410A, representing an announced reduction of approximately 68% in GWP.
This difference is one of the reasons for the growing adoption of R-32 in modern equipment.
For us, this also means following the appropriate work methods and procedures for this refrigerant during installation and service.
A 15 A electrical circuit
The 9,000 and 12,000 BTU models are specified for a 208 to 230 V, 60 Hz, single-phase power supply, with a 15 A circuit breaker.
The maximum heating current is listed as 9.4 A for both capacities.
In cooling mode, the maximum is 6.4 A for the 9,000 BTU model and 6.9 A for the 12,000 BTU model.
Even with these relatively modest electrical requirements, the circuit must be properly verified.
We never simply assume that an outlet, wire, or old circuit breaker is suitable just because it is nearby.
Built-in Wi-Fi for remote management
The series documentation indicates built-in Wi-Fi connectivity with access to the AIRSTAGE mobile app.
For homeowners, this feature allows them to adjust settings remotely and manage home comfort more easily.
The platform also supports several optional accessories and integration options, including certain BACnet and Modbus interfaces and wired controllers.
In a residential setting, built-in Wi-Fi is nevertheless the most immediately useful advantage.
Mistakes we want to avoid when installing a unit near a window
The Les Cèdres project illustrates several points to check when a unit is positioned near an exterior opening.
We specifically avoid:
- a unit positioned too close to the ceiling;
- a mounting system that is unsuitable for the wall;
- a unit positioned too close to the window frame;
- a drain route without sufficient slope;
- improperly insulated lines;
- an air outlet that is immediately obstructed;
- a location that prevents maintenance;
- unnecessary holes in a decorative finish.
The goal is to do the job once and do it properly, rather than correct a poor positioning decision afterward.
A visually discreet installation despite a highly graphic wall
This installation has an interesting detail: the wall already draws a great deal of attention with its geometric pattern.
We therefore want the wall-mounted heat pump to remain as understated as possible.
The white Fujitsu Altair 700 casing matches the ceiling and the window’s white frame. The unit remains visible, but it does not dominate the room.
That is often exactly what a homeowner is looking for.
A heat pump is a technical piece of equipment. It must be accessible and operate efficiently without necessarily becoming the focal point of the décor.
