Installation of a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Altair 700 wall-mounted heat pump in Saint-Jacques-le-Mineur, Montérégie

A compact wall-mounted installation where the positioning of the indoor unit makes all the difference

At Saint-Jacques-le-Mineur, in Montérégie, we installed a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Altair 700 wall-mounted heat pump, an especially attractive solution when looking for a compact, quiet unit capable of providing both cooling and heating.

The photo of this installation clearly illustrates an aspect we pay close attention to at AirGreen: choosing the location of the indoor unit. Here, the heat pump was installed very high on the wall, immediately below a ceiling bulkhead, preserving usable space while keeping the unit relatively unobtrusive in the room.

This type of configuration requires more than simply mounting the unit on the wall. Air circulation, filter access, the clearance required around the unit, the routing of the refrigerant lines, and condensate drainage must all be considered. An indoor unit installed a few centimetres too low or too close to an obstruction can affect both the appearance of the room and the quality of air distribution.

In this project in Saint-Jacques-le-Mineur, the white indoor unit of the Fujitsu Altair 700 blends seamlessly into the architectural environment. Its relatively compact design is particularly well suited to this type of installation when the available space above doors, in a hallway, or near a ceiling bulkhead is limited.

Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Altair 700: a wall-mounted heat pump designed for heating and cooling

The Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Altair 700 belongs to Fujitsu’s H series. According to the technical documentation provided for this range, it is available in two nominal cooling capacities: 9,000 BTU/h and 12,000 BTU/h, with the 09KMAS1 and 12KMAS1 systems.

The combinations listed in the technical specifications are:

  • ASUH09KMAS + AOUH09KMAS1: nominal cooling capacity of 9,000 BTU/h;
  • ASUH12KMAS + AOUH12KMAS1: nominal cooling capacity of 12,000 BTU/h.

However, the actual capacity of a heat pump should never be selected solely based on a room’s floor area. At AirGreen, we also consider insulation, sun exposure, room layout, the number of windows, ceiling height, heat loss, and how the space is used.

An oversized unit is not automatically preferable. It can reach the requested temperature quickly without running long enough to maintain consistent comfort and properly manage humidity. Conversely, an undersized unit may run almost continuously during periods of high demand.

Different performance depending on the selected capacity

The Altair 700’s technical specifications provide particularly useful data for comparing the two versions. The 9,000 BTU variant can modulate in cooling from approximately 3,100 to 12,100 BTU/h, while the 12,000 BTU model offers a range of approximately 3,100 to 13,800 BTU/h.

In heating mode, the nominal capacity reaches:

  • 12,000 BTU/h for the 09KMAS1 version;
  • 14,000 BTU/h for the 12KMAS1 version.

The maximum heating range advertised reaches approximately 14,500 BTU/h and 15,000 BTU/h, respectively. This modulation capacity is one of the advantages of a heat pump with Inverter technology: rather than operating only in on or off mode, the compressor can adjust its output according to the heating or cooling requirements.

Fujitsu also indicates that the outdoor unit can provide up to 33% more heat than the stated nominal capacity, depending on operating conditions.

High energy efficiency for a compact wall-mounted unit

Efficiency is clearly an important criterion for homeowners in Saint-Jacques-le-Mineur, as well as for those comparing a wall-mounted heat pump in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore or the South Shore.

According to Fujitsu’s technical table, the 9,000 BTU version has a SEER2 rating of 30.0, while the 12,000 BTU version reaches 27.5 SEER2. Both models have Energy Star ratings indicated in the manufacturer’s documentation.

These values place energy efficiency at the heart of the Altair 700’s design. For the owner, this mainly means that the system can adjust its energy consumption when full capacity is not required.

A heat pump rarely operates at 100% of its capacity for an entire day. In spring, fall, or during a mild summer day, modulation capacity allows the system to operate at a level more appropriate to the actual demand.

Heating down to -15 °C according to Fujitsu documentation

An important detail must be properly understood when evaluating this series for the Quebec climate. Fujitsu indicates a heating operating range of -15 °C to 24 °C for the models presented in this documentation. The cooling range extends from -10 °C to 50 °C.

This means that choosing an Altair 700 must take into account the property’s overall heating system and the building’s specific needs.

At AirGreen, we do not simply look at the number of BTUs printed on the box. For a Quebec residence, low-temperature performance, available supplemental heating, room layout, and occupant habits must also be factored into the equation.

Why this installation in Saint-Jacques-le-Mineur is technically interesting

An indoor unit placed near the ceiling without sacrificing aesthetics

In the project photo, the indoor unit is placed directly beneath a projecting ceiling structure. The result is visually clean: the heat pump occupies an area that would otherwise have little use, rather than being unnecessarily lowered on the wall.

This type of positioning is particularly useful in spaces where every centimeter counts.

However, installing a wall-mounted heat pump high on a wall requires maintaining the necessary clearances around the unit. Air must be able to enter the unit properly and then be redistributed through the lower louver without immediately encountering an obstruction.

The Fujitsu’s front panel also remains accessible, which is essential for periodic filter cleaning and HVAC maintenance.

Indoor operation as low as just 19 dB(A)

Acoustic comfort is often underestimated when purchasing an air conditioner or heat pump.

Fujitsu documentation indicates that the indoor unit can reach a sound level as low as 19 dB(A) in quiet cooling mode, with approximately 21 dB(A) in heating mode under the same setting. At high speed, the stated level reaches approximately 40 dB(A) in cooling and 42 dB(A) in heating.

This becomes particularly relevant when a wall-mounted unit is located:

  • near a bedroom;
  • in a living room;
  • in a hallway adjacent to bedrooms;
  • in a home office;
  • in a small dwelling where the unit is relatively close to the occupants.

Proper positioning contributes as much to acoustic comfort as it does to thermal comfort.

ProCore copper coils

Fujitsu also highlights its ProCore coils, made of highly corrosion-resistant copper. The Altair 700 series documentation presents this feature as an element intended to promote the durability of the indoor unit.

For an HVAC installation intended to remain in service for several years, the materials used inside the unit matter just as much as the features visible on the remote control.

R-32 with a lower global warming potential

The Fujitsu Altair 700 operates with R-32 refrigerant.

Fujitsu’s documentation compares its global warming potential with that of R-410A and indicates a GWP of 675 for R-32 versus 2,088 for R-410A, representing a reduction of approximately 68%. The manufacturer also states that R-32 systems require a smaller amount of refrigerant.

Refrigerant is, of course, only one part of an HVAC system’s environmental equation. Proper installation remains essential: refrigerant connections, leak testing, evacuation, and commissioning must be carried out according to the manufacturer’s requirements.

1/4 in liquid and 3/8 in gas piping

For installers and homeowners who want to understand the system’s practical details, Fujitsu lists the following dimensions for the two Altair 700 capacities presented in the data sheet:

Liquid: 1/4 in
Gas: 3/8 in

The minimum piping length is specified as 3 m (10 ft), while the maximum length reaches 20 m (66 ft). The maximum permitted vertical difference is specified as approximately 14.9 m (49 ft).

This design flexibility can make installation easier when the ideal location for the indoor unit is not directly behind the available location for the outdoor condenser.

A 208–230 V power supply on a 15 A circuit breaker

Both versions listed in the documentation operate on a 208 to 230 V, 60 Hz, single-phase power supply, with a 15 A circuit breaker specified in the technical data sheet.

It remains essential to inspect the electrical panel, existing wiring, and nameplate of the equipment actually installed on-site. Information in a brochure never replaces verification of the exact model and the electrical requirements associated with the installation.

Built-in Wi-Fi and remote control

The Altair 700 series also features built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, enabling remote monitoring and control through the AIRSTAGE mobile app, according to Fujitsu documentation.

This is a useful feature when, for example, you want to adjust the temperature before returning home or check the system’s operation remotely.

The platform can also support several control and integration options. Fujitsu specifically mentions interfaces that enable compatibility with BACnet and Modbus, which may be useful in more complex projects or in certain buildings equipped with automated management systems.

Wireless remote control included

Even with Wi-Fi features, daily use remains simple. A wireless remote control is included with the indoor unit, and several modes are available, including energy-saving, powerful operation, minimum heat, automatic defrost, and automatic restart modes.

For us, a good installation is not simply about making the machine work. During commissioning, it is also important for the owner to understand the essential settings needed to achieve the desired comfort without unnecessarily operating the unit at maximum capacity.

Installation errors we seek to avoid

A Fujitsu wall-mounted heat pump installation may seem relatively simple when looking only at the final result. In reality, several details can reduce the quality of the work:

  1. Placing the unit too close to the ceiling, which can hinder air intake.
  2. Choosing a wall solely for aesthetic reasons without analyzing air circulation in the room.
  3. Creating an inadequate slope for the condensate drain, with a risk of leakage or backflow.
  4. Using incorrectly sized piping instead of complying with Fujitsu requirements.
  5. Neglecting filter accessibility for future maintenance.
  6. Choosing capacity based solely on floor area, without considering the building’s heat loss.
  7. Neglecting the finishing of ducts and wall penetrations, which nevertheless remains one of the most visible parts of an installation.

The quality of an HVAC installation often shows in details that we notice only when they have been poorly executed.

An installation designed to remain easy to maintain

The Fujitsu unit uses a washable air filter. Regular access to the filter is important because dust accumulation can reduce airflow, increase operating time, and gradually soil the evaporator.

Even a high-end heat pump therefore requires a minimum amount of maintenance.

We recommend cleaning the filters regularly according to the unit’s use and the conditions in the home. Periodic professional maintenance also makes it possible to check the condition of the evaporator, blower wheel, drain, connections, and outdoor unit.

This project reflects our approach at AirGreen

This installation of a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Altair 700 in Saint-Jacques-le-Mineur illustrates an approach we also apply to our heat pump installations in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore: adapting the equipment to the building rather than forcing the building to adapt to the equipment.

On this installation, the visible placement of the unit makes effective use of the upper part of the wall while maintaining a clean, understated appearance. Behind this result are several technical decisions: height, clearance, airflow direction, piping route, and accessibility.

The Fujitsu Altair 700 also offers several practical features: an Inverter compressor, R-32 refrigerant, built-in Wi-Fi, indoor operation as low as 19 dB(A), piping that can extend up to 66 feet, and two nominal capacities available in this series.

For a homeowner comparing different wall-mounted heat pump options in Quebec, it is precisely these details that make it possible to make an informed choice.

Fujitsu heat pump installation in Saint-Jacques-le-Mineur and Greater Montreal

At AirGreen, we carry out heating, air conditioning, and wall-mounted heat pump projects throughout the Greater Montreal area, including Saint-Jacques-le-Mineur, Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the South Shore, and the North Shore.

Every building presents its own constraints. The role of an experienced HVAC team is to determine not only which equipment can be installed, but above all which configuration will truly provide the best comfort, proper air distribution, and a clean, durable installation.

This Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Altair 700 is a good example: a compact unit installed in a precise architectural space, with a discreet visual integration that does not compromise the room’s everyday use.
