In Marieville, we installed a FUJITSU AIRSTAGE Orion XLTH wall-mounted heat pump+ in a residential space where aesthetics, air circulation, and proximity to openings had to be carefully considered.
The jobsite photo shows an indoor unit installed high on a main wall, directly above a set of mirrors. On the right, a wide opening leads to an adjacent room. This configuration makes the choice of location particularly interesting: the system had to heat and cool not only the room where it is installed but also promote good air distribution toward nearby areas.
At AirGreen, we place great importance on this aspect. A wall-mounted heat pump installation is not simply a matter of finding an empty space on a wall. We analyze the room’s volume, openings, windows, available height, traffic areas, and how air will be able to move throughout the home.
In this Marieville project, the indoor unit was installed high enough to ensure effective air distribution while maintaining appropriate clearance from the ceiling. Its location above the mirrors also avoids taking up wall space that could be used for furniture while keeping the unit accessible for HVAC maintenance.

The manufacturer’s technical data sheet indicates the following nominal capacities:
- 09KTAP1 : 9,000 BTU/h in cooling and 12,000 BTU/h in heating;
- 12KTAP1 : 12,000 BTU/h in cooling and 15,300 BTU/h in heating;
- 15KTAP1 : 14,500 BTU/h in cooling and 17,400 BTU/h in heating.
These figures illustrate an important point: a heat pump’s heating capacity is not necessarily identical to its nominal cooling capacity.
When choosing a unit, we therefore never rely solely on the number of BTUs included in the system’s commercial name. We consider the home’s actual heating load and, above all, the capacity available when the outdoor temperature drops.
Excellent heating capacity at very low temperatures
Fujitsu’s technical data sheet presents particularly interesting information for cold-weather heating.
At -30 °C, the maximum heating capacity remains equivalent to:
- 113% of nominal capacity for the 09KTAP1;
- 103% for the 12KTAP1;
- 101% for the 15KTAP1.
At -26 °C, the indicated values are still 147%, 128%, and 116%, respectively.
For a homeowner comparing different heat pumps in Marieville, this data is more relevant than simple claims such as “operates down to -30 °C.”
Two units can advertise the same minimum operating temperature while offering very different heating capacities as they approach that limit.

In the photo of this installation in Marieville, we can see that the indoor unit is installed very close to the ceiling, but with sufficient space above the unit.
This height provides several advantages.
First, the cool air can be projected forward and mix with the ambient air before descending into the occupied area. In heating mode, the louvers can direct the warm air downward to reduce the natural stratification of heat near the ceiling.

Simple, identical piping dimensions across all three capacities
The technical documentation specifies identical refrigerant piping dimensions for all three models in this range:
- 1/4 in. for the liquid line;
- 3/8 in. for the gas line.
The specified minimum piping length is 10 ft, while the maximum length is 66 ft.
The maximum permitted vertical difference is 49 ft.
These features provide good flexibility for locating the outdoor unit when the building configuration does not allow it to be positioned directly behind the indoor unit.
Nevertheless, we always try to design a logical and as-clean-as-possible piping route.
An outdoor unit designed for our winter
Fujitsu indicates that the Orion XLTH+ includes a base pan heater designed for cold climates.
This feature deserves particular attention in Quebec.
During a defrost cycle, the heat pump melts the frost accumulated on the outdoor heat exchanger. This water must be able to drain properly.
When the outdoor temperature is very low, it can freeze quickly.
We must therefore consider not only the outdoor unit’s mechanical operation, but also:
- its height above the ground;
- snow that may accumulate around it;
- where the defrost water will fall;
- the possibility of ice formation;
- prevailing winds;
- accessibility for maintenance.
A unit capable of heating at -30 °C must be installed so that it can actually operate under these conditions.
The electrical circuit depends on the selected model
The series operates at 208 to 230 V, single-phase, 60 Hz.
According to the technical data sheet:
- The 09KTAP1 model requires a 15 A circuit breaker;
- The 12KTAP1 model requires a 20 A circuit breaker;
- The 15KTAP1 model also requires a 20 A circuit breaker.
Before any installation, we must therefore check the electrical panel’s capacity and the configuration of the available circuits.
This step is particularly important in older homes in Marieville, Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore, where electrical panels may already be heavily loaded.
A clean installation must also remain easy to maintain
