In Saint-Mathieu, a FUJITSU wall-mounted heat pump precisely integrated into a space where every detail mattered
In Saint-Mathieu, this installation carried out by our AirGreen team clearly illustrates a situation we regularly encounter on the South Shore of Montreal: the homeowner wants to significantly improve the comfort of a living space, but the available location for the indoor unit requires a precise, clean installation that integrates well visually.
For this project, we installed a FUJITSU AIRSTAGE ORION XLTH wall-mounted heat pump, a line specifically designed to provide both cooling and heating in Quebec’s demanding conditions. In the photo taken after the installation, the challenge is immediately apparent: the indoor unit had to be positioned in the upper section of a relatively narrow wall, directly beside a large window and near a corner of the room.
It was therefore not enough simply to mount a heat pump on the wall. Its height, clearance, and positioning had to be carefully selected to promote proper air distribution while maintaining the harmony of the room.
This is exactly the kind of detail that transforms a simple equipment installation into a truly professional HVAC installation.
Why the FUJITSU ORION XLTH was particularly well suited to this project
The FUJITSU AIRSTAGE ORION XLTH line is a single-zone wall-mounted heat pump series using R-32 refrigerant. The technical documentation provided for this line lists nominal cooling capacities ranging from 9,000 to 22,000 BTU/h, depending on the model, with nominal heating capacities ranging from 12,000 to 25,200 BTU/h.
More importantly for a residence located in Saint-Mathieu, the series is designed to operate in heating mode down to -26 °C. This is an essential feature when a heat pump must serve not only as an air conditioner during warm periods, but also as a true heating appliance during a significant part of the Quebec winter.
FUJITSU documentation also indicates that the ORION XLTH series offers:
- an Inverter compressor that modulates its operation according to demand;
- a base pan heater designed for regions with extremely cold climates;
- built-in Wi-Fi for remote monitoring and control;
- ProCore copper coils designed to improve corrosion resistance;
- indoor operation as low as 23 dB(A) on certain models;
- multiple fan speeds;
- an economy mode, a minimum-heat mode, and automatic defrosting;
- a backlit remote control;
- a compact outdoor unit and a low-noise outdoor operating mode.
These are particularly relevant features for a heat pump installed in a living space like the one shown in our photo.
A wall-mounted installation where the evaporator’s location was decisive
One of the interesting aspects of this Saint-Mathieu project is the integration of the indoor unit.
The room features a large glazed opening occupying a significant portion of the exterior wall. The remaining space above and to the right of the window had to be used intelligently. We therefore positioned the FUJITSU evaporator very high on the wall, near the ceiling, while maintaining the clearances required for the unit’s operation and servicing.
This position offers several advantages.
First, it completely frees up the living space. No floor-standing equipment encroaches on the available space. Second, the heat pump’s elevated position allows the airflow to circulate through the room rather than being immediately blocked by furniture.
The proximity of the large window is also interesting from a comfort perspective. A large glazed area can be a zone where solar heat gains in summer and heat losses in winter are more noticeable. Proper airflow direction therefore becomes particularly important.
The photo also reveals what an installation nearing completion entails
A heat pump installation is not limited to the equipment we see once the work is complete.
In this construction photo, we can see, among other things, a rectangular opening beneath the unit as well as a lower electrical opening in the wall. These elements remind us that a residential HVAC project may require coordinated work on the walls and existing services before the surface is fully finished.
Our priority during this stage is first and foremost technical: properly installing the heat pump, ensuring the appropriate routing of the refrigerant lines, drainage, wiring, and communications, then checking that the entire system is operating correctly.
The wall finish can then be completed so that the final integration is as discreet as possible.
This sequence is important. Closing or concealing certain areas too quickly, before completing the checks, can unnecessarily complicate a subsequent intervention.
What the FUJITSU ORION XLTH actually brings to a South Shore home
A heat pump designed to provide heat when the outdoor temperature drops
A common mistake when purchasing a wall-mounted heat pump is to look only at the number of BTUs listed in the unit’s commercial name.
For the climate of Montreal and the South Shore, we need to go further.
It is particularly important to examine the heating capacity as the outdoor temperature decreases.
The FUJITSU technical specifications are particularly interesting in this regard. Depending on the ORION XLTH model, the maximum available capacity remains very high even at low temperatures. For example, the documentation indicates maximum heating percentages at -15 °C, -21 °C, and -26 °C, with results varying according to the capacity selected.
That is precisely why, at AirGreen, we avoid sizing a heat pump solely according to an approximate rule based on square footage.
We also consider:
the layout of the rooms, ceiling height, insulation, windows, solar exposure, heat loss, the floor where the space is located, and how the air can actually circulate.
A larger heat pump is not automatically a better heat pump. A properly sized unit can generally provide more stable operation and better comfort control.
Efficiency varies depending on the capacity selected
The ORION XLTH line offers several efficiency levels.
According to the FUJITSU technical specifications, the advertised TRÈS2 values are 33.1 for the 9,000 BTU model, 30.5 for the 12,000 BTU model, 27.5 for the 15,000 BTU model, 25.5 for the 18,000 BTU model, and 24.0 for the 24,000 BTU model. The five capacities presented in the documentation also carry the ENERGY STAR classifications indicated by FUJITSU.
This demonstrates an important point for our customers in Saint-Mathieu, Brossard, Longueuil, Saint-Constant, Candiac, La Prairie, and elsewhere on the South Shore: two heat pumps from the same product line do not necessarily have exactly the same energy performance.
Sizing must therefore be completed before choosing the final model, not the other way around.
R-32: an important element of this new FUJITSU generation
This series operates with R-32.
FUJITSU states in its documentation a global warming potential of 675 for R-32, compared with 2,088 for R-410A, representing an announced reduction of 68% in GWP. The manufacturer also specifies that its R-32 systems require less refrigerant while maintaining their heating performance.
For our technicians, this change obviously means following the appropriate procedures, equipment, and installation methods for the refrigerant used.
For the homeowner, the main point is that choosing a modern heat pump is no longer limited to comparing BTUs and price.
Quiet operation, particularly important in this room
The position visible in the photo places the indoor unit directly in the living space. Sound level therefore becomes a genuine comfort criterion.
On the 9,000 and 12,000 BTU models in the range, the technical specifications indicate an indoor sound level as low as 23 dB(A) at quiet speed. The 15,000 BTU model is rated at 26 dB(A), while the 18,000 and 24,000 BTU versions are rated at 30 dB(A) in quiet mode.
This fan modulation is important: when a room approaches its setpoint temperature, the Inverter system can adjust its operation instead of running continuously at full power.
Built-in Wi-Fi and simplified daily control
Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity is one of the series' advertised features.
It enables use of the AIRSTAGE mobile app for monitoring and remote control. The platform also supports various control and integration solutions, including certain BACnet and Modbus interfaces when a project requires more advanced integration.
In a residence, the benefit is much simpler: being able to adjust the operation of your FUJITSU heat pump without having to be in front of the unit.
The piping must match the model exactly
Here is a technical detail that deserves far more attention than it receives when replacing an older heat pump.
Piping dimensions vary across the ORION XLTH range.
According to the FUJITSU specifications:
- the 9,000 and 12,000 BTU models use piping of 1/4 in. liquid and 3/8 in. gas;
- the 15,000 BTU model uses 1/4 in. liquid and 1/2 in. gas;
- the 18,000 and 24,000 BTU models use 3/8 in. liquid and 5/8 in. gas.
When replacing an existing system, you should therefore never assume that the old piping is automatically compatible with the new unit simply because the two devices appear to have a similar capacity.
At AirGreen, we verify this compatibility before deciding whether an existing line can be kept or needs to be replaced.
The permitted lengths provide more installation possibilities
The technical documentation also specifies different maximum lengths depending on capacity.
The 9,000 and 12,000 BTU models can support up to 25 m (82 ft) of piping, the 15,000 BTU model up to 30 m (98 ft), while the 18,000 and 24,000 BTU models can reach 50 m (164 ft), provided the manufacturer’s technical requirements are met.
This flexibility becomes especially useful in certain projects in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore, where the ideal location for the indoor unit does not always correspond to the most obvious location for the outdoor condenser.
The mistakes we seek to avoid in an installation like the one in Saint-Mathieu
Our field experience shows that many future problems can be avoided during installation.
Among the points we monitor particularly closely:
- Incorrect capacity sizing, which can affect the system’s comfort and operation.
- Improper indoor unit placement, particularly when it is wedged near a ceiling, an adjacent wall, or a window.
- Piping that is incompatible with the selected model.
- Poorly planned drainage, which can lead to condensation problems.
- An outdoor installation that is not properly adapted to winter, particularly with regard to snow, ice, and drainage during defrost cycles.
- A rushed finish before the final technical checks.
- Improper airflow direction, which can create uncomfortable areas even when the heat pump is powerful enough.
These details, much more than the logo on the unit, often determine the true quality of a ductless heat pump installation.
A base pan heater that is particularly well suited to Quebec
The documentation for the ORION XLTH series specifically mentions a base pan heater designed for extremely cold climate regions.
This is an aspect we consider particularly relevant for installations carried out in Greater Montreal.
During winter, a heat pump must periodically perform defrost cycles. The water generated must be able to drain properly around the outdoor unit. Preparing the condenser location, its height, and its clearance from accumulated snow are therefore important aspects of the work.
A cooling range that comfortably covers Saint-Mathieu summers
Winter naturally attracts a great deal of attention when heat pumps are discussed in Quebec, but the unit also remains the primary cooling system in many homes.
FUJITSU indicates an operating range for the ORION XLTH models shown, in cooling mode, from -10 °C to 50 °C.
In a room like the one in our installation, with a large glass area, the ability to control summer heat gains can make a significant difference on hot, sunny days.

What we take away from this installation is not just the presence of a FUJITSU ORION XLTH on a wall.
It is the full set of decisions surrounding the equipment.
The unit had to fit into a specific area next to a large window. Its location had to allow for good air distribution without compromising the use of the room. The connections had to be properly prepared before the finishing work. And the selected system had to be sufficiently suited to South Shore conditions to provide both cooling and heating.

An excellent heat pump that is improperly sized or positioned will still result in a disappointing installation.
