Installation of a FUJITSU AIRSTAGE ORION XLTH wall-mounted heat pump in Saint-Ours

A Saint-Ours balcony installation designed to preserve space, airflow, and technical access

Installing a wall-mounted heat pump on a balcony requires a different approach from a conventional installation on the ground or on a foundation wall. In Saint-Ours, we completed this installation of a FUJITSU AIRSTAGE ORION XLTH with R32 in an outdoor space enclosed by a masonry façade, a large glass door, and a balcony railing. The project photo clearly illustrates the challenge: placing the outdoor unit in a relatively compact environment while preserving sufficient space for airflow, maintenance, and normal balcony use.

We therefore opted for an installation on a raised metal support, with support points fitted with anti-vibration elements. The heat pump is positioned parallel to the façade, with its fan facing the open balcony space rather than directly toward the wall. The connections are grouped against the façade and protected in a vertical line set cover, while an outdoor electrical disconnect is installed nearby.

The result is a compact, clean installation designed above all around the building’s actual constraints.

Why elevate the heat pump on this balcony?

For this Saint-Ours installation, simply placing the outdoor unit directly on the concrete slab would not have been our preferred choice.

The metal support visible in the photo serves, among other things, to:

  • keep the heat pump at a certain height above the floor;
  • leave more space beneath the unit;
  • facilitate the drainage of water produced during defrost cycles;
  • reduce the risk of ice accumulation directly beneath the equipment;
  • simplify access to certain parts of the unit during future HVAC maintenance;
  • limit the transmission of vibrations to the slab through properly selected support points;
  • maintain a stable installation despite the relatively limited balcony space.

In a climate like Quebec’s, this detail becomes particularly relevant since the outdoor unit continues to operate during the winter.

The FUJITSU ORION XLTH is specifically designed to operate in heating mode down to -26 °C. Fujitsu also equips this series with a base pan heater, designed for very cold climatic conditions and particularly useful for managing the water produced during defrosting.

Clearance in front of the fan is not a minor detail

The presence of a balcony railing can considerably complicate a heat pump installation.

The outdoor unit's fan must be able to discharge air without causing excessive recirculation around the heat exchanger. If a unit is placed too close to a wall, partition, overly enclosed railing or another obstacle, some of the discharged air may flow back toward the unit.

This can interfere with the system's operation.

In this installation, the railing is largely made of glass, but the unit was still positioned with its fan facing the open part of the balcony and with enough space for the air to disperse.

For us, the rule is simple: the most discreet location is not necessarily the best technical location. Instead, we look for a balance between aesthetics, accessibility, clearance and performance.

A configuration particularly well suited to condos and homes with balconies

Although this installation is located in Saint-Ours, this type of configuration is also very common in our projects involving wall-mounted heat pumps in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore.

In buildings with balconies, we often have to deal with several constraints at the same time:

  • limited floor space;
  • glass or metal railings;
  • nearby doors and windows;
  • condominium regulations;
  • a mandated location for the conduits;
  • restrictions on drilling;
  • the need to preserve access to the balcony;
  • proximity to neighbours;
  • more stringent acoustic requirements.

A compact heat pump like the FUJITSU AIRSTAGE ORION XLTH is particularly well suited to these conditions.

A vertical line set cover to protect the connections

On the right side of the photo, the connections between the inside of the home and the outdoor unit run inside a beige line set cover matching the facade.

This finish serves two purposes.

First, it protects the various components of the installation from direct exposure. Second, it avoids leaving a set of visible conduits running along the wall.

In a balcony installation, this aesthetic consideration matters more than one might think. The homeowner sees the unit and its connections every time they use this outdoor space. A properly insulated refrigerant line that is left completely exposed can quickly give the impression of unfinished work.

We therefore aim to group the piping, wiring, and other connections logically.

The electrical disconnect remains easily accessible

We can also see the outdoor electrical disconnect mounted near the heat pump on the front.

This device makes it possible to locally disconnect power to the equipment during service work.

The FUJITSU ORION XLTH series operates at 208-230 V, 60 Hz, single-phase. However, the required protection rating varies according to the unit’s capacity: Fujitsu specifies 15 A for the 09K and 12K versions and 20 A for the 15K, 18K, and 24K versions.

That is why we always verify the exact model before determining the electrical requirements for a HVAC installation.

An easily identifiable R32 heat pump

The symbol R32 is directly visible on the front panel of the outdoor unit installed in Saint-Ours.

This generation of FUJITSU ORION XLTH therefore uses R32 refrigerant rather than the R410A used in many systems from previous generations.

Fujitsu documentation indicates a global warming potential of 675 for R32, compared with 2088 for R410A, representing a 68% reduction according to the manufacturer.

For the homeowner, this does not change how the heat pump is used day to day. For the installer, however, the refrigerant used must be taken into account from the start of site preparation, during equipment handling, and throughout commissioning.

ORION XLTH: a product line designed for cold climates

The FUJITSU AIRSTAGE ORION XLTH is a single-zone ductless heat pump. It provides both heating and cooling with a compressor featuring Inverter technology.

The compressor can modulate its capacity rather than constantly operating at full power. The goal is to adapt heating or cooling output to the home’s actual needs.

The series presented in the technical specifications includes several capacities:

  • 09KZAH1: 9,000 BTU/h nominal cooling capacity;
  • 12KZAH1: 12,000 BTU/h;
  • 15KZAH1: 14,500 BTU/h;
  • 18KZAH1: 18,000 BTU/h;
  • 24KZAH1: 22,000 BTU/h.

At nominal heating output, these same systems are rated at 12,000, 16,000, 18,000, 21,600, and 25,200 BTU/h, respectively.

Since the rating plate is not legible in the photo of this project, we do not want to arbitrarily assign a particular capacity to the unit installed in Saint-Ours. The exact capacity must always be confirmed using the model number.

Performance that remains impressive at low temperatures

One of the most important features of the ORION XLTH is its ability to continue operating when the outdoor temperature drops significantly.

All capacities in this series are rated with a heating range down to -26 °C.

The technical data sheet even indicates that some capacities can produce, at low temperatures, a maximum output greater than their reference nominal capacity.

At -21 °C, Fujitsu indicates in particular:

  • 154% of nominal capacity for the 09K;
  • 124% for the 12K;
  • 126% for the 15K;
  • 127% for the 18K;
  • 95% for the 24K.

And even at -26 °C, the 09K, 12K, 15K, and 18K versions are still rated at 127%, 102%, 109%, and 106%, respectively, of their reference nominal capacity.

These figures help explain why choosing a heat pump for Quebec should never be based solely on its nominal BTU rating.

High energy efficiency, particularly at lower capacities

The FUJITSU data sheet also presents high seasonal efficiency values.

The indicated TRÈS2 varies according to capacity:

  • 33.1 for the 09K;
  • 30.5 for the 12K;
  • 27.5 for the 15K;
  • 25.5 for the 18K;
  • 24.0 for the 24K.

The various models in the range are also identified by Fujitsu with ENERGY STAR ratings, including the designations associated with cold climates presented in the manufacturer's data sheet.

For a heat pump rebate application, however, we always recommend verifying the complete model number and the applicable program at the time of the project. Programs, criteria, and amounts may change.

This Saint-Ours project shows why installation matters just as much as the heat pump chosen.

The support must be stable enough without taking up the entire balcony.

One of the most interesting details of this installation is the structure supporting the unit.

We have a relatively compact heat pump, but it is placed on a support wide enough to hold all four mounting points while maintaining good stability.

The support's feet are themselves positioned to distribute the load across the slab.

This type of solution is particularly interesting when a customer does not want to drill into certain parts of the building or when a conventional wall bracket is not the preferred solution.

Vibrations must be controlled from the time of installation

An inverter heat pump is generally quiet, but no outdoor unit is completely free of mechanical vibration.

The problem arises when these vibrations are transmitted to a structure capable of amplifying them.

On a concrete balcony, we therefore need to consider not only the sound level specified by the manufacturer, but also how the unit is supported.

The 09K and 12K versions of the ORION XLTH are rated at only 23 dB(A) indoors in quiet mode, while the outdoor sound level varies approximately from 46 to 50 dB(A), depending on the capacity.

A proper installation allows you to fully benefit from this quiet design rather than creating avoidable structural noise.

Pipe diameters are not identical across the entire range

Another point often overlooked when replacing an older heat pump concerns the dimensions of the refrigerant lines.

For the FUJITSU ORION XLTH:

  • the 09K and 12K models use 1/4 in. liquid and 3/8 in. gas;
  • the 15K model uses 1/4 in. liquid and 1/2 in. gas;
  • the 18K and 24K models use 3/8 in. liquid and 5/8 in. gas.

We therefore always verify compatibility when existing piping needs to be retained.

The fact that an older system appears to have the right capacity does not automatically mean that its refrigerant lines are suitable for the new model.

A pipe length that offers plenty of flexibility

FUJITSU also specifies fairly generous maximum lengths for this series.

Depending on the capacity, the maximum permitted length ranges from 25 m to 50 m, while the maximum vertical difference can reach 20, 25, or 30 m.

In an apartment building or condo, this flexibility can be very useful when the indoor unit is located some distance from the balcony or when the run must go around architectural features.

Nevertheless, we always prioritize the most logical route possible: an unnecessarily long run increases the materials required and makes finishing more complicated.

Built-in Wi-Fi and simplified everyday control

The FUJITSU ORION XLTH also offers built-in Wi-Fi connectivity with access through the AIRSTAGE app.

The owner can therefore adjust several operating parameters remotely.

The indoor unit also offers several fan speeds, a quiet mode, and a backlit remote control. Fujitsu also mentions various modes, including energy saving, minimum heat, automatic defrost, and automatic restart.

For a heat pump installed in a condo or a home used daily, this control flexibility quickly becomes practical.

What we recommend before installing a heat pump on a balcony

Before choosing the location of a ductless heat pump on a balcony, we recommend checking several factors.

In particular, it is important to ensure that the unit does not block an exit, interfere with the opening of a door or window, and has the necessary clearance.

In a condominium building, it may also be necessary to check the rules regarding:

  • visible outdoor units;
  • façade modifications;
  • penetrations;
  • drainage;
  • noise;
  • the permitted dimensions;
  • the electrical supply;
  • the exact location of the condenser.

These checks help prevent having to relocate an installation once the work is complete.

A compact installation without sacrificing technical logic

This Saint-Ours project clearly illustrates our approach at AirGreen: we are not simply looking for a place where the outdoor unit can physically fit.

We need to think about what happens next.

How will the fan discharge the air? How will the defrost water be drained? Will the technician be able to access the equipment? Are the connections protected? Is the disconnect switch accessible? Will the balcony remain usable?

In this installation, the FUJITSU AIRSTAGE ORION XLTH was raised on a stable structure, positioned with its fan facing the open space, connected via a protected route, and equipped with an easily identifiable outdoor disconnect switch.

It is this combination of a good heat pump and a carefully planned HVAC installation that makes it possible to obtain a system suited to the building’s reality.
