A custom HVAC installation in an area where every centimetre mattered
This installation carried out by AirGreen in Montréal-Nord perfectly illustrates a common situation in Montréal homes, duplexes, and apartments: the best location for a wall-mounted heat pump is not always a large, completely unobstructed wall. In this project, the Hitachi airHome 400 indoor unit had to be integrated into a narrow space, directly above a door and between two closely spaced side walls.
The photograph clearly shows the main constraint. The unit occupies almost all the available width. The ceiling is low, the door trim comes immediately beneath the unit, and a smoke detector is nearby. We therefore had to measure the width, height, intake clearances, and space required to open the front panel precisely before confirming this location.
Our goal was not simply to fit the unit into this space. We had to ensure that it could:
- draw in enough air through its upper section;
- blow air freely into the room;
- remain accessible for filter cleaning;
- be securely mounted despite the limited space;
- not interfere with the door opening;

Why was the space above the door advantageous?

- It did not encroach on the space reserved for furniture.

What the installation work reveals about the image
The Hitachi airHome 400 unit was centered above the opening. Its white casing blends in with the door, trim, and light-colored walls. Despite the limited width of the space, the sides of the unit do not touch the side walls.
This clearance is important for several reasons:
- it prevents contact that could transmit vibrations;
- it allows the casing to expand normally;
- it facilitates certain maintenance procedures;
- it prevents friction between the plastic and the walls;
- it helps preserve the appearance of the installation.
The unit is also positioned high enough to completely clear the door trim. The louvers can open unobstructed and direct the airflow downward and forward.
The detector visible on the ceiling was also taken into consideration. A wall-mounted heat pump should not be positioned in a way that obstructs a safety device or makes its maintenance difficult. In this case, the unit and the detector remain separate and accessible.
An indoor unit designed to facilitate technical access
The design of the Hitachi airHome 400 range includes several practical details for installation and maintenance. The manufacturer specifically mentions removable side covers, a drain connection that can be oriented to the left or right, a removable drain pan, and a front panel designed to be removed with a limited number of screws.
These features are particularly useful in such a tight space. When a unit is installed between two closely spaced walls, every opportunity for easier access matters. Hitachi’s documentation also describes a large installation plate and an enlarged intake area, two elements that contribute to installation stability and the unit’s operation.

The exact capacity of the pictured unit cannot be confirmed from its appearance alone. Several units in the same range share a similar design. Proper sizing must be determined based on the building’s actual needs.
To choose the appropriate capacity, we evaluate in particular:

- the number of rooms open to the zone;
- the level of insulation;
- the age of the building;
- the number and type of windows;
- sun exposure;
- the floor where the home is located;
- heat loss;
- the use of the room;
- heating and cooling expectations.
A heat pump should never be selected solely according to a general rule based on square footage.
Energy efficiency suited to residential use
Depending on the selected combination, the airHome 400 series can achieve a seasonal cooling efficiency rating of up to 20.0 SEER2. CPSC2 heating values vary by model and by the climate region used for the evaluation.
The technical documentation also indicates different coefficients of performance depending on the outdoor temperature. At approximately 8 °C, the published COP ranges from 2.6 to 3.3, depending on capacity. At -15 °C, the published values remain above 1 for the models presented, meaning that the unit continues to transfer more thermal energy than it directly consumes in electricity under the test conditions.
The series uses R32 refrigerant, a fluid now used in several new residential systems. It can operate in cooling mode at outdoor temperatures up to approximately 46 °C and in heating mode down to approximately -20.5 °C, depending on the limits specified for models in this range.
This data does not necessarily mean that the heat pump alone will replace all of a home's heating at the lowest temperatures. Actual performance depends on the model, the heating load, and the building's configuration. In some projects, a backup system remains necessary.
Inverter technology for more stable comfort
Vector DC Inverter technology allows the compressor to adjust its speed according to demand. Instead of repeatedly starting at full capacity and then shutting off completely, the unit modulates its operation.
This modulation offers several benefits:
- more stable temperatures;
- fewer short cycles;
- quieter operation;
- better humidity management;
- energy consumption better suited to actual demand.
In a Montréal-Nord home where the unit is installed near a high-traffic area, this stability is particularly valuable. A system that frequently starts at full speed can create more noticeable variations in noise and airflow.
Quiet operation near occupied rooms

Air distribution to optimize in a narrow passageway
A unit installed above a door must be oriented correctly so that the air does not concentrate only in the doorway.
During commissioning, we adjust the louvers so that the airflow reaches the occupied area. In cooling mode, cold air naturally tends to descend. An overly vertical orientation could create a draft near the door without properly cooling the rest of the room.
In heating mode, warm air rises. Therefore, an angle directed sufficiently downward should be used to promote air mixing and reduce stratification near the ceiling.

- in cooling mode, favor more horizontal air distribution;
- in heating mode, direct more of the airflow downward;
- avoid constantly directing the air toward a seated person;

FrostWash and Mold Guard: two useful functions in an urban home
The FrostWash technology runs a freeze-and-thaw cycle on the indoor heat exchanger. This process is intended to loosen and remove some of the impurities accumulated on the coil.
The Hitachi brochure presents controlled tests on the reduction of viruses, bacteria, and mold, as well as better airflow retention compared with a unit without this function.
The Mold Guard function, for its part, aims to dry the internal components by circulating air after operation. This helps limit residual moisture, odors, and conditions conducive to mold growth.
In homes where the kitchen, living room, and circulation areas are close together, dust and particles can quickly accumulate on the filters. These technologies are useful, but they do not replace regular maintenance.
Recommended maintenance for this installation
The position above the door makes the panel visible and accessible with a small, stable step stool. The owner should:
- Check the filters every few weeks during periods of intensive use.
- Clean them according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Keep the area above the unit clear.
- Watch for unusual odors or noises.
- Have the system inspected and cleaned periodically.
Professional HVAC maintenance may include cleaning the coil, fan, condensate pan, and drain. It is particularly important if the unit operates frequently in cooling mode during humid periods.
Drainage: an invisible but essential consideration
Condensate drainage is one of the most important parts of a wall-mounted installation. In air conditioning, moisture in the air condenses on the coil and must be continuously drained.
In an installation above a door, a leak could damage:
- the trim;
- the paint;
- the door frame;
- the floor;
- the materials inside the wall.

Refrigerant connections must match the exact model
Piping diameters vary according to capacity. The 9,000 and 12,000 BTU models notably use 1/4 in. liquid and 3/8 in. gas connections. The 18,000 BTU model uses a 1/2 in. gas connection, while higher-capacity versions may require 5/8 in.
This distinction is essential. An incorrect diameter can lead to:
- a loss of efficiency;
- poor oil return;
- abnormal pressures;
- increased noise;
- a reduction in the compressor’s service life;
- warranty-related complications.

The main mistakes to avoid in such a limited space
Choosing a unit that is too wide
You must allow for more than the cabinet width. Side clearances, access to the connections, and the normal movement of the plastic must also be taken into account.
Installing the unit flush against the ceiling
The upper section is used for air intake. Insufficient clearance can reduce airflow and increase noise.
Blocking the front panel from opening
The filters must be removable. An installation that cannot be maintained quickly becomes problematic.
Neglecting the trim beneath the unit
The lower louver must open without touching the door frame. You must also avoid directing condensate or humid air directly onto the wood.
Ignore nearby safety devices
The smoke detector visible on the ceiling must remain accessible and functional. Installing HVAC equipment must never obstruct safety equipment.
Relying solely on aesthetics
The unit may appear well centered, but the drainage, wall strength, line routing, and air distribution must also be confirmed.
Grants: confirm the combination rather than the product line name
The Hitachi airHome 400 brochure indicates that the series is eligible for several provincial incentives. However, eligibility for a grant is never confirmed solely by the product line's commercial name.
The following must be verified:
- the exact indoor model;
- the exact outdoor model;
- the capacity at the reference temperature;
- the applicable certification;
- the program criteria at the time of purchase;
- the address and type of building;
- the installation date;
- the detailed invoice;
- required photographic evidence.
