In Saint-Pie, installing a wall-mounted heat pump is not simply a matter of mounting an indoor unit on a wall and connecting an outdoor unit. In a home where mouldings, windows, ceiling height, and the interior layout impose their own constraints, every positioning detail matters. For this installation, we worked with a FUJITSU AIRSTAGE ORION XLTH wall-mounted heat pump+, a range designed to maintain heating operation down to -30 °C.
The photo of our installation shows precisely the type of situation where quality workmanship makes a real difference. The FUJITSU indoor unit is installed very high on the wall, immediately beneath the ceiling moulding and near a large glazed opening. Despite the relatively limited space available, we maintained a visually balanced position while taking into account the routing of the refrigerant lines and condensate drain.
This proximity to the ceiling requires careful planning. A wall-mounted unit must have enough space around it to allow air circulation, future maintenance, and the opening of its panels. An installation that is too tight, improvised solely for aesthetic reasons, can complicate filter cleaning and technical servicing. Our objective therefore remains the same: to find the best balance between HVAC performance, accessibility, and architectural integration.
Why the FUJITSU ORION XLTH+ is particularly relevant for Saint-Pie
Saint-Pie, like much of Montérégie, experiences winter temperatures that can be particularly low. A heat pump intended to become a major heating source must therefore be selected based on its ability to continue producing heat when the outdoor temperature drops well below freezing.
The technical documentation for the FUJITSU AIRSTAGE ORION XLTH+ line indicates a heating operating range down to -30 °C (-22 °F). It also uses R-32 refrigerant, features Inverter technology, a base pan heater designed for very cold climates, and integrated Wi-Fi connectivity. The line includes nominal cooling capacities of 9,000, 12,000, and 14,500 BTU/h, depending on the selected model.
These features are important in a residential installation in Quebec because a heat pump's performance should never be judged solely by its rated capacity as shown on a sales sheet.
A heat pump capable of producing more heat than its rated capacity
A particularly interesting technical detail of the ORION XLTH+ concerns its maximum heating capacity.
According to Fujitsu's specification sheet:
- the 09KTAP1 model, nominally rated at 9,000 BTU/h for cooling, can reach up to 24,000 BTU/h in heating;
- the 12KTAP1 can reach up to 27,300 BTU/h;
- the 15KTAP1 can reach up to 28,000 BTU/h.
This obviously does not mean that a home should be sized solely based on these maximum values. Proper selection depends on the building's heat loss, the area actually served, insulation, solar exposure, the number of windows, room layout, and several other factors.

These figures should be interpreted in the context of the manufacturer's test conditions, but they provide a clear indication of this product line's focus: the FUJITSU ORION XLTH+ was designed for applications where winter heating is a priority, rather than simply as an air conditioner with an occasional heating function.
The indoor unit’s location: a detail that genuinely affects comfort
In our Saint-Pie installation, the wall-mounted unit is located in the upper part of the wall, beside a window and immediately beneath decorative molding.
This type of configuration requires several elements to be checked even before drilling into the wall.
We must consider, among other things:
- the available height between the top of the unit and the ceiling;
- the ability to open the front panel properly;
- access to the filters;
- the desired airflow direction;
- the routing of the refrigerant lines;
- the slope of the condensate drain;
- the location of the outdoor unit;
- the possible presence of studs, cables, or other concealed elements in the wall;
- the visual impact of the line-set cover.
In the photo of this installation, you can also see the very discreet passage of the technical finish along the upper part of the wall. Placing the connections near the ceiling can, in certain configurations, reduce their visibility and maintain a cleaner appearance in the room.
Why we avoid installing a wall-mounted unit simply “wherever there is room”
A relatively common mistake when replacing or installing a unit for the first time is to choose the evaporator’s position solely based on the available space.
For us, that is not enough.
A professional HVAC installation must also take into account how air will move through the room. If the unit blows directly toward a major obstruction, into a poorly oriented hallway, or toward an area where no one wants to feel a draft, comfort may be reduced even with a high-end heat pump.
The ORION XLTH+ features automatic vertical air direction control as well as multiple fan speeds. The range offers six speeds plus automatic mode. This modulation makes it possible to adjust the airflow according to the required load and the desired comfort level.
As low as 23 dB indoors, depending on the model
Sound level is another important consideration when an indoor unit is installed in a living room, open-concept area, or near a bedroom.
The 09KTAP1 and 12KTAP1 models can operate as quietly as 23 dB(A) in quiet mode according to the technical specifications, while the 15KTAP1 can reach 26 dB(A).
In practice, this helps maintain a much quieter environment during periods when the demand for heating or cooling is low.
Inverter technology plays an essential role here. Instead of operating solely according to an on-off logic at full power, the compressor adjusts its speed according to demand. This modulation promotes a more stable temperature and limits sudden changes in operation.
R-32: the refrigerant choice for this new-generation FUJITSU
The ORION XLTH+ range operates with R-32.
Fujitsu states in its documentation that this refrigerant has a significantly lower global warming potential than R-410A. The document compares a GWP of 2,088 for R-410A with 675 for R-32, corresponding to an announced reduction of approximately 68%.
For the homeowner, the presence of R-32 is mainly a sign that they are looking at a recent generation of equipment. For the installer, it also means following the procedures, tools, handling requirements, and installation practices suited to the refrigerant being used.
ProCore copper coils
The indoor unit in this series uses ProCore coils, which Fujitsu describes as being made of highly corrosion-resistant copper.
This detail is not visible once the unit is installed, but it is one of the technical factors we consider when a customer compares several wall-mounted heat pumps.
A heat pump is more than just a white front panel, a remote control, and an efficiency rating. The internal construction, compressor, heat exchangers, cold-weather protection devices, and parts availability are all equally important when looking for a solution designed to operate for several years.
What this installation in Saint-Pie shows about how we carry out an HVAC installation
A clean finish around a moulded ceiling
One of the most visible details of this installation is the proximity between the indoor unit and the decorative mouldings.
This type of wall leaves no room for a misaligned installation. A difference of a few centimetres can make the result look unbalanced. We therefore need to measure the wall plate’s position precisely before starting to drill.
The connection cover must also be positioned in a way that is consistent with the existing architecture. In this installation in Saint-Pie, routing through the upper area preserves much of the wall and prevents a long vertical drop from visually dominating the room.
A compact indoor unit despite its substantial capacity
The three indoor units in the range listed in the technical specifications are approximately 894 mm wide, or 35 3/16 in, with a height of 295 mm (11 5/8 in) and a depth of 280 mm (11 in).
These dimensions explain why this family of heat pumps may be a good option in homes where the available space above doors and windows is limited.
However, this never eliminates the need for an on-site inspection. A trim piece, curtain rod, doorway, or a few missing centimetres can completely change the installation plan.
Up to 20 metres of piping according to the manufacturer’s specifications
Fujitsu’s documentation specifies a minimum piping length of 3 metres (10 ft) and a maximum length of up to 20 metres (66 ft) for these models, with a maximum vertical difference of 14.9 metres (49 ft).
The specified refrigerant piping dimensions are:
- liquid: 1/4 in;
- gas: 3/8 in.
This information is particularly useful when the outdoor unit must be positioned far from the wall where the evaporator is located or when certain architectural constraints must be avoided.
In all cases, we choose the piping route before beginning the installation. Modifying the route once the holes have been drilled can lead to unnecessary compromises.
Base pan heater and defrosting: two important elements in winter
The winters in Saint-Pie, Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, the South Shore, and the North Shore present particular challenges for heat pumps.
In heating mode, the outdoor heat exchanger becomes cold and can accumulate frost. The system must therefore periodically perform a defrost cycle.
The L’ORION XLTH+ includes an automatic defrost function as well as a base pan heater designed for extremely cold climates.
This base pan heater helps manage the water produced during defrost cycles and limit ice buildup in the lower part of the outdoor unit. However, its effectiveness also depends on a very simple factor: how the outdoor unit is installed.
A heat pump designed for -30 °C must still be positioned high enough to avoid becoming trapped by snow or ice in the middle of winter.
The mistake to avoid: neglecting the outdoor location because the appliance is “designed for cold weather”
Excellent low-temperature performance does not compensate for poor installation.
We specifically avoid:
- to place the outdoor unit too close to ground level;
- to obstruct its intake or discharge;
- to point its fan toward an extremely confined space;
- to neglect the drainage of defrost water;
- to create a location where snow falling from a roof can accumulate directly on the appliance;
- to make the unit practically inaccessible for HVAC maintenance.
Long-term reliability depends as much on the product as on its installation.
Built-in Wi-Fi for remote control
The ORION XLTH+ series includes built-in Wi-Fi connectivity for remote monitoring and control through the AIRSTAGE app.
For many homeowners, this feature becomes particularly useful in winter: the temperature can be adjusted without being physically in front of the remote control.
The platform also offers more advanced control options. The documentation specifically mentions compatibility with various optional controllers and interfaces that enable integration with BACnet and Modbus protocols, expanding the system’s potential use beyond a very simple residential installation.
ENERGY STAR and cold climate
The models in the series presented in the documentation carry ENERGY STAR ratings, including the cold-climate designation indicated in the Fujitsu specifications.
This is an important consideration when a homeowner evaluates the energy efficiency of a new wall-mounted heat pump and wants to verify its eligibility for financial assistance.
However, we always recommend confirming the exact model’s eligibility for the applicable program at the time of purchase. An eligible brand or series does not automatically mean that all capacities, combinations, or installations qualify for the same amount.
High efficiency ratings depending on the selected capacity
The technical specifications sheet lists TRÈS2 values of up to:
- 33.5 BTU/hW for the 09KTAP1;
- 31.5 BTU/hW for the 12KTAP1;
- 28.7 BTU/hW for the 15KTAP1.
The regional V CPSC2 rating is listed as:
- 11,5 for the 09KTAP1;
- 11,3 for the 12KTAP1;
- 10,7 for the 15KTAP1.
These values make it possible to compare seasonal performance among different units, but they should never be considered in isolation. A home's actual heating needs and proper sizing remain the priorities.
An installation that also facilitates future maintenance
A FUJITSU wall-mounted heat pump must be serviced regularly to maintain good airflow.
The filter in this series is washable. This makes routine maintenance easier for the owner, provided the unit is installed in a sufficiently accessible location.
During more thorough maintenance, our technicians must be able to open the unit and inspect the heat exchanger, blower wheel, drain, and internal components. That is why we think from the time of installation about the day the unit will need to be cleaned or repaired.
A unit that is extremely well concealed but impossible to service is not a successful installation.
