This MIDEA MIDEA35 wall-mounted heat pump installation in the Hinchinbrooke neighborhood highlights an essential aspect of a residential HVAC project: the positioning of the outdoor unit. In the photo of our completed installation, the Midea unit is situated on a balcony, between a glass door, a brick façade, and a metal guardrail.

The available space was therefore not unlimited. We had to find a configuration that would maintain adequate airflow around the heat pump and preserve access to the door and balcony, while also allowing for future equipment maintenance.

The refrigerant lines, wiring, and condensate drain must be routed with as few unnecessary detours as possible while respecting the building’s structure and finishes.

Midea’s ductless design makes this type of project easier. According to the manufacturer’s documentation, the indoor unit is connected to the outdoor unit through a relatively compact wall opening, avoiding the installation of a complete ventilation duct network.

In an existing property in Hinchinbrooke area, this flexibility can make it possible to modernize heating and cooling without undertaking major interior renovations.

Airflow around the outdoor unit

The large circular grille visible on the front of the heat pump is obviously not decorative. It allows the fan to move a large volume of air through the outdoor heat exchanger.

It is therefore essential that this air be able to leave the unit freely.

In a space like this, with a railing and a nearby wall, we must avoid a configuration in which the expelled air would be immediately redirected toward the unit. Excessive recirculation can reduce the system’s ability to transfer heat efficiently.

It is best to avoid placing the following there:

  • balcony furniture;
  • large containers;
  • storage bins;
  • solid decorative panels;

A side-discharge design suited to tight spaces

Midea presents its side-discharge outdoor units as compact equipment that can be integrated, particularly into patios, terraces, rooftops, and balconies.

This is precisely one of the advantages of this configuration for an installation such as this one in Hinchinbrooke.

A larger unit or one with a different geometry could significantly reduce the usable space on the balcony. Here, the equipment's relatively slim form makes it easier to integrate near the façade while leaving the rest of the area accessible.

Why the MIDEA35 is a particularly interesting heat pump for Hinchinbrooke

Heating down to -30°C

The MIDEA35 is presented in Midea documentation as a premium wall-mounted series of the extreme heat pump.

It uses R-454B refrigerant and is identified as Cold Climate V6.1.

The three capacities in the series presented in the brochure are designed to operate in heating mode down to an outdoor temperature of -30°C. The advertised cooling range extends up to 50°C.

For an installation in Hinchinbrooke area, making it much more relevant than a simple cooling rating.

A heat pump in Quebec must be evaluated based on its performance in January as well as in July.

Three capacities available in the MIDEA35 series

The nameplate of the photographed unit is not legible enough to identify the exact installed capacity with certainty. We therefore prefer not to arbitrarily assign a BTU rating to this project.

The MIDEA35 series presented by the manufacturer includes:

  • 9,000 BTU/h in cooling;
  • 12,000 BTU/h in cooling;
  • 18,000 BTU/h in cooling.

The corresponding indoor units are the MSESU-H09B-2A, MSESU-H12B-2A, and MSESU-H18B-2A. The outdoor units are respectively the MO1SS-H09B-2A, MO1SS-H12B-2A, and MO1SS-H18B-2A.

The associated AHRI numbers are 215471386, 215471387, and 215471388.

This distinction is important because energy efficiency, unit dimensions, and installation requirements vary by capacity.

Up to 33.3 SEER2

The series can achieve a particularly high rating of 33.3 SEER2, but this maximum efficiency applies to the 9,000 BTU version.

The values shown in the Midea specification sheet are:

  • 9,000 BTU: 33.3 SEER2;
  • 12,000 BTU: 29.4 SEER2;
  • 18,000 BTU: 25.6 SEER2.

For heating, the HSPF2 IV values are respectively 22.0, 14.5, and 16.2.

That is why we always distinguish between the performance advertised for a series and that of the specific combination installed at the customer's property.

What the MIDEA35 delivers at -15°C

A particularly interesting data point for a homeowner of Hinchinbrooke refers to heating capacity when the outdoor temperature reaches -15°C.

Midea documentation states:

MIDEA35 9,000 BTU

13,500 BTU/h of nominal heating capacity at -15°C, with a COP of 3.60.

MIDEA35 12,000 BTU

13,500 BTU/h at -15°C, also with a COP of 3.60.

MIDEA35 18,000 BTU

22,600 BTU/h at −15 °C, with a stated COP of 4.40.

For us, this type of data is much more useful when evaluating a heat pump intended to genuinely heat a residence during the winter.

The variable-speed compressor improves comfort stability

Variable-speed technology allows the MIDEA35 to adjust its operation according to the heating or cooling demand.

Rather than constantly alternating between full capacity and complete shutdown, the compressor can operate at a reduced output when the room’s needs decrease.

Midea indicates that this technology is intended to limit temperature variations and provide more stable operation than a conventional on-off system.

This characteristic reinforces the importance of proper sizing.

Systematically installing the largest possible heat pump is not our approach. We want to select a capacity suited to the building’s thermal load so the system can fully benefit from its modulation.

The outdoor unit’s dimensions directly influence the project

On a balcony like this, every inch can matter.

The MIDEA35 versions 9,000 and 12,000 BTU have outer dimensions of approximately:

35.04 in wide × 13.46 in deep × 26.50 in high.

The version 18,000 BTU is larger:

37.24 in × 16.14 in × 31.89 in.

The difference may seem relatively small on paper, but in a space limited by a door and a railing, it can determine the best available location.

We therefore always confirm the model before finalizing the outdoor layout.

The line diameters are not identical for all MIDEA35 units

Another important technical detail concerns the refrigerant lines.

For the 9,000 and 12,000 BTU, Midea specifies liquid/gas lines measuring 1/4 in and 3/8 in.

For the 18,000 BTU, the diameters increase to 3/8 in and 5/8 in.

The stated maximum lengths are 82 ft for the 9,000 and 12,000 BTU models and 164 ft for the 18,000 BTU model.

This difference becomes particularly important when replacing an old heat pump in a property in Hinchinbrooke.

The presence of existing lines does not automatically mean they are compatible with the new appliance.

A power supply suitable for the installed model

All three MIDEA35 units use a 208/230 V, single-phase, 60 Hz.

The series also offers up to 100 airflow adjustment levels, allowing the indoor fan to be adjusted gradually. SmartHome control and Wi-Fi are also available depending on the configuration.

Practical features for everyday use

The MIDEA35 offers, among other features:

  • ECO mode;
  • night mode;
  • silent mode;
  • the timer;
  • the “Follow Me” function;
  • horizontal swing;
  • vertical swing;
  • 8°C heating;
  • automatic cleaning;
  • humidity control;
  • different fan speed levels.

The “Follow Me” mode allows the temperature sensor built into the remote control to be used so that the unit can adjust comfort more precisely based on the temperature measured near the user.

A design that also makes maintenance easier

Midea indicates that the indoor blower wheel can be removed to facilitate deep cleaning of the unit.

This is a practical advantage.

A heat pump used for heating and cooling circulates a great deal of air over the course of a year. Even with regularly maintained filters, dust can gradually accumulate on certain internal components.

We therefore recommend consideringHVAC maintenance as soon as the equipment is selected and installed, not only when the system begins to experience a problem.

Eligibility for rebates must be verified using the exact AHRI number

The three MIDEA35 configurations presented in the documentation have distinct AHRI references:

  6. the electrical connections;

In the final photo, the result looks simple: a Midea outdoor unit neatly installed in front of a brick facade.

In reality, several constraints had to be taken into account: the balcony, the glass door, the railing, the unit’s height, the metal bracket, air circulation, vibrations, and water drainage in winter.

This is precisely the kind of situation that demonstrates the importance of a professional wall-mounted heat pump installation in Hinchinbrooke.

A MIDEA35 can deliver excellent performance on paper, including operation down to -30°C, performance of up to 33.3 SEER2, variable-speed technology, and very quiet indoor operation. But all these features must be accompanied by an installation that meets the equipment’s actual needs.
