Generic diagram: wall-mounted heat pump, indoor and outdoor units

In summer, the outdoor unit rejects the house's heat outside.

  1. Mounted level on a wall plate, high enough for the air to reach the whole room, with enough space around it to slide the filters out easily.

  2. The refrigerant lines, the communication cable and the drain go through the wall in a single opening, sealed against water, cold air and insects.

  3. Two insulated copper pipes connect the two units. Outside, a line cover can protect them from sun, knocks and weather.

  4. A shut-off switch near the outdoor unit isolates it safely for service. It must stay accessible at all times.

  5. The compressor and the fan. In heating mode it captures heat from the outdoor air, even in winter, and moves it inside.

  6. On the ground or on the wall, it keeps the unit above accumulated snow. The unit stays clear and defrost water can drain away.

  7. The fan needs to blow freely. Storage, a fence or a wall too close, and efficiency drops while noise goes up.

The job

The Perfect Balance of Comfort, Technology, and Efficiency for Ville-Marie Residents

In the heart of Ville-Marie, where Montreal’s winters bite hard and summers test endurance, finding the right wall-mounted heat pump becomes more than just a choice—it’s a necessity. Recently, we at AirGreen completed an impressive installation of the SHARP ZU1 24,000 BTU mini split system for one of our clients. With its advanced R-32 refrigerant technology, extreme cold weather performance, and exceptional air purification, the SHARP ZU1 is a game-changer for any Montreal home.

Why the SHARP ZU1 is Perfect for Montreal Homes

Montreal’s ever-changing weather demands a heat pump that can do it all—efficient cooling in summer and reliable heating in freezing winters. The SHARP ZU1, ranked the highest in “Notre Guide des Thermopompes Murales 2025,” meets and exceeds these demands with:

  • Cooling Capacity: 24,000 BTU for hot, humid summers.
  • Heating Capacity: Operates seamlessly down to -27°C, ensuring warmth even in Quebec’s harshest winters.
  • Energy Efficiency: 22 SEER rating and ENERGY STAR® certification, guaranteeing lower energy bills and environmental impact.
  • Noise Levels: Whisper-quiet operation—just 25 dB indoors, perfect for peaceful nights.

But this isn’t just any wall-mounted heat pump. It’s equipped with Plasmacluster technology and Coanda airflow control, delivering not only comfort but also cleaner, healthier air.

Installation of a SHARP ZU1 24,000 BTU Wall-Mounted Heat Pump in Ville-Marie

The Story Behind the Installation

Our client in Ville-Marie needed a solution that could endure long winters while keeping their family comfortable year-round. Their priorities? Reliability, energy savings, and air quality.

We introduced them to the SHARP ZU1, a unit we often recommend for homeowners seeking top-tier performance without compromise. After carefully analyzing their needs, our team designed and executed the installation with precision. The outdoor condenser, expertly mounted on a reinforced ceiling bracket, optimizes airflow while minimizing any impact on the space below. The indoor head, sleek and modern, blends effortlessly into their living area.

With AirGreen’s commitment to high-quality installations and attention to detail, the client received a system that not only works flawlessly but also enhances their home’s comfort and value.

Plasmacluster: Clean Air Technology for Healthier Living

SHARP heat pumps stand out for their unique Plasmacluster ionization technology—a feature unmatched by other mini splits. Imagine breathing the crisp, clean air of nature indoors. That’s what Plasmacluster delivers. Here’s how:

  1. Eliminates Viruses and Bacteria: Neutralizes airborne pathogens for a healthier home.
  2. Reduces Mold and Allergens: Perfect for allergy sufferers and families.
  3. Fights Odors: Breaks down lingering smells from pets, cooking, and tobacco.

Our Ville-Marie client loved the idea of combining comfort with healthier indoor air, a benefit especially valuable in urban settings.

Coanda Airflow Control: No More Uneven Temperatures

One common complaint we hear from homeowners is uneven heating and cooling. Some rooms are too hot, others too cold. The SHARP ZU1 solves this problem with its Coanda airflow technology. Instead of blasting air directly, it redirects airflow along walls and ceilings, ensuring a uniform temperature throughout the home.

In Ville-Marie, this was particularly important as the client’s living space had open-concept areas prone to temperature imbalances. With Coanda airflow, they now enjoy consistent comfort in every corner of their home.

R-32 Refrigerant: The Future of Efficiency and Sustainability

At AirGreen, we take pride in offering environmentally responsible solutions. The SHARP ZU1 uses R-32 refrigerant, which:

  • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 67% compared to older refrigerants.
  • Improves energy efficiency, cutting electricity costs by around 10%.
  • Aligns with upcoming government energy regulations for 2025.

This feature appealed to our client’s commitment to a greener future while helping them save on energy bills.

Seamless Integration with Smart Technology

Modern living requires modern solutions. The SHARP ZU1 comes equipped with built-in WiFi connectivity and smart controls, giving homeowners complete control over their comfort. Through a user-friendly app, our client can:

  • Adjust temperature settings remotely.
  • Monitor energy usage in real time.
  • Receive notifications about maintenance or unusual activity.

This smart functionality ensures peace of mind and convenience, especially during Montreal’s unpredictable weather shifts.

A Noise-Free Solution for Maximum Comfort

Nobody wants a loud HVAC system disrupting their home. The SHARP ZU1 delivers whisper-quiet performance:

  • Interior Unit: 25 to 49 dB, quieter than a soft whisper.
  • Exterior Unit: 53 dB, minimizing noise even in compact spaces.

In Ville-Marie’s urban environment, where space is limited, this low-noise feature proved to be a significant advantage.

Eligibility for the $2,688 LogisVert Grant

One of the highlights of this installation is the system’s eligibility for the $2,688 LogisVert grant provided by Hydro-Québec. This grant made the SHARP ZU1 an even smarter investment for our client, offering substantial savings on an already energy-efficient system.

At AirGreen, we ensure our clients take full advantage of available grants and subsidies, making high-quality heat pumps accessible and affordable.

Your numbers

What would it look like at your place?

Two quick checks with real numbers: what heat costs, and what your current heaters add up to in BTU/h.

Before / afterThe cost of the same heat

Baseboards and electric furnaces turn 1 kWh of electricity into 1 kWh of heat. A heat pump delivers more: that is its COP. At Hydro-Québec’s rate D (11.142¢/kWh above 40 kWh a day, since 1 April 2026):

Before · baseboards11.142¢/kWh
After · heat pump–

Hydro-Québec: a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months.

Estimate per kWh of heat, at the chosen temperature, using the certified COP from the product page. Taxes, access charge and backup heat not included.

Size checkYour baseboards, in BTU/h
–BTU/h of installed electric heat

Conversion: 1 W = 3.412 BTU/h. An indication, not a load calculation: baseboards and furnaces are often stronger than the real need, and they can stay as backup. AirGreen confirms the capacity on site.

    Frequently asked questions

What people ask us about this kind of work

    12 questions
Does a wall-mounted heat pump heat in winter?
Yes, it heats and cools. Its capacity drops in very cold weather; the operating range depends on the model and is listed on its spec sheet.
    Wall-mounted or multi-zone: how do I choose?
One wall head and one condenser outside: the direct solution for a room or an open area. For two to five rooms, a multi-zone puts one head in each room on a single condenser.
Where does the outdoor unit go?
Where it stays above the snow, clear and accessible, away from walkways. We decide it with you during the estimate.
    Are there grants?
Depending on the model and your situation, assistance programs may apply, including Hydro-Québec's LogisVert. AirGreen checks the model number before quoting an amount. See the grants.
    Do I need a permit?
Rules vary from city to city: location, distances, noise. See permits and by-laws, and we check for your address.
    How cold can it heat?
It depends on the model. According to Hydro-Québec, newer models work down to a temperature between −15 °C and −25 °C, and some cold-climate models are certified lower. The minimum temperature is on each unit's spec sheet.
    How much can I save?
Hydro-Québec says a heat pump can be up to three times more efficient than baseboards for heating in the colder months. The result depends on the house, the climate and how it is used.
How is the LogisVert assistance calculated?
For ENERGY STAR cold-climate certified heat pumps, Hydro-Québec lists assistance of $120 per 1,000 BTU/h of heating capacity at −8 °C. AirGreen checks the exact model before quoting an amount; only Hydro-Québec confirms the assistance granted. See the grants.
    Is it noisy?
The sound level depends on the model and is listed in decibels on each unit's spec sheet. Location matters too: when possible, we avoid putting the outdoor unit under a bedroom window.
The outdoor unit is covered in ice: is that normal?
Some frost is: the unit runs defrost cycles. Never hit the ice. If the unit stays iced up or stops heating, call us.
Does AirGreen hold the required licences?
Yes. AirGreen holds RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, subclasses 15.8 Ventilation, 15.10 Refrigeration and 16 Electricity.
    Is the estimate free?
Yes. The on-site estimate is free and the quote follows within 24 hours. Book my free estimate.
