Installation of a Fujitsu Aquila XLTH triple-zone heat pump in Saint-David

A multi-zone installation designed to heat and cool three spaces without multiplying the number of outdoor units

Installing a Fujitsu Aquila XLTH triple-zone heat pump in Saint-David requires much more than simply mounting three wall units and connecting them to an outdoor compressor. In this type of project, the quality of the result depends primarily on planning: selecting the indoor capacities, routing the refrigerant lines, positioning the outdoor unit, managing drainage, ensuring the necessary clearances around the condenser, and organizing the different comfort zones.

For this installation carried out by our AirGreen team, we worked with a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE multi-zone system using R32 refrigerant, designed to allow several areas of the residence to benefit from individual control while using a single outdoor unit. Fujitsu’s technical documentation for the H series confirms that one outdoor unit can power multiple indoor units and that the available configurations can combine different capacities and different evaporator types depending on the project.

The visible result outside clearly illustrates one of the most important advantages of a multi-zone system: a single outdoor heat pump serves multiple zones of the home, considerably reducing clutter around the building.

An outdoor unit installed above ground level rather than at ground level

One of the details that immediately stands out in this Saint-David installation is the positioning of the Fujitsu heat pump on a sturdy wall-mounted structure, at a safe distance from the ground.

We installed the unit on metal supports suitable for the condenser’s weight and dimensions. This approach offers several advantages in our Quebec climate.

It notably helps keep the unit above a significant portion of the winter snow accumulation. A condenser installed too close to the ground can end up surrounded by compacted snow after several storms or after the yard has been cleared of snow. When air does not circulate properly around the heat pump, its heating performance may be affected.

The elevated installation also facilitates the drainage of water produced during defrost cycles. A heat pump used during the winter must periodically defrost its outdoor coil. The resulting water must be able to drain away without forming a mass of ice directly beneath the unit.

In the photo of this installation, it is also apparent that our team preserved access to the system’s service side. This detail is important: the refrigerant connections, service valves, and connections must remain accessible to facilitate inspections, maintenance, and any future work.

Three refrigerant circuits neatly connected to a single heat pump

A triple-zone heat pump necessarily involves more piping than a single-zone system.

Each indoor unit must be connected to the outdoor unit by its refrigerant circuit. In addition, electrical connections and the necessary components for condensate drainage are required.

On this Fujitsu installation, several sets of insulated lines run neatly down the wall before joining the outdoor unit’s connections. We grouped the routes to limit clutter while preserving sufficiently gradual bends so as not to place unnecessary strain on the copper lines.

The quality of this part of the work is particularly important. A poorly planned multi-zone installation can quickly produce a visually disorganized result, with three completely different routes, an accumulation of wiring, or lines that become difficult to maintain.

Why the selection of the three indoor units is not left to chance

A multi-zone system should not be sized simply by approximately adding up the floor area of the rooms.

Fujitsu offers various combinations of indoor units for its H Series AIRSTAGE systems. The documentation notably presents wall-mounted units with several capacities, as well as Slim Duct, compact cassette, and Mid Static Duct solutions. It also specifies that the connected combined capacity may, in certain approved configurations, exceed the outdoor unit’s rated capacity. However, Fujitsu clearly indicates that exceeding 100% connected capacity does not increase the system’s actual output capacity.

This is an essential point when comparing quotes for a multi-zone heat pump installation in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the North Shore or the South Shore.

Installing three indoor units with a high total capacity does not automatically mean that the outdoor compressor will be able to deliver that same output simultaneously in all three rooms.

We must therefore consider:

  • the area and volume of each space;
  • the building's insulation;
  • the number and size of the windows;
  • sun exposure;
  • the layout of the floors;
  • heat loss;
  • the actual use of each zone;
  • and the available capacity of the outdoor unit under winter conditions.

Fujitsu also specifies in its tables that they are used to verify approved combinations, but they do not replace system capacity selection; the manufacturer recommends its Design Simulator tool for this selection.

The real advantage of a triple-zone system: room-by-room comfort

In a home with multiple floors or rooms used in very different ways, a single-zone system quickly reaches its limits.

An upstairs bedroom does not have the same needs as a living room with many windows on the ground floor. An office occupied all day may require more cooling than a guest room used occasionally.

With the Fujitsu Aquila multi-zone, each indoor unit has its own controller. Fujitsu states that the indoor units can be adjusted individually, allowing the temperature of each zone to be tailored.

However, this does not mean that one room can be heating while another is operating in cooling mode. The series documentation specifies that the system provides heating and cooling, but not simultaneously in opposite modes.

This distinction is important, and we always explain it to homeowners before installation.

It is therefore possible to set different temperatures in the three spaces when they are operating in the same general mode, but a typical residential multi-zone system should not be considered three completely independent systems.

What this Fujitsu installation in Saint-David concretely demonstrates about the quality of a multi-zone HVAC project

An outdoor installation that takes the building into account

The brick wall of this residence provided a suitable surface for arranging the various connections while keeping the Fujitsu unit outside the main traffic areas.

However, we had to work around several factors: the nearby window, the height of the building, the lines coming from the various interior zones, and the space required in front of the fan to ensure proper airflow.

We therefore positioned the condenser so that its front remained largely unobstructed. In an HVAC installation, this aspect must never be overlooked. A heat pump may be perfectly sized on paper and yet lose efficiency if its airflow discharge is blocked by a wall, fence, balcony, or another obstacle.

R32: an important component of this Fujitsu generation

The unit visible in this installation clearly bears the identification R32.

The refrigerant used influences the system design, installation procedures, and technicians' work methods. When replacing an older system, you should therefore never assume that existing piping can automatically be reused simply because its diameter appears compatible.

We check the condition of the lines, their length, the required diameters, the manufacturer's requirements, and the conditions of the previous installation before determining the best approach.

This is particularly important with a multizone heat pump, where several refrigerant circuits converge at the same outdoor unit.

A system designed for heating in cold climates

The Fujitsu AIRSTAGE Aquila H Series lineup presented by the manufacturer is intended for multizone residential applications, including heating needs in cold climates. Fujitsu documentation indicates, among other things, that the CTEB versions of the series can operate in heating mode down to -26 °C and in cooling mode up to 50 °C.

This information is particularly relevant in Quebec.

However, we must distinguish between a heat pump's minimum operating temperature and the amount of heat it can actually provide in extremely cold weather.

These are two different things.

To determine whether a heat pump can meet a property's needs on its own or whether supplemental heating remains advisable, we instead look at the heating capacity available at low temperatures, the building's heat loss, and the home's overall heating strategy.

A single outdoor unit, serving multiple indoor zones

The Fujitsu AIRSTAGE H Series platform offers several outdoor unit formats.

According to the documentation provided by Fujitsu:

  • one 18,000 BTU/h outdoor unit can connect up to two indoor units;
  • one 24,000 BTU/h unit can be connected to up to three;
  • a 36,000 BTU/h unit can support up to four;
  • a 45,000 BTU/h unit can support up to five indoor units.

The document specifically presents, on page 4, an example of a three-zone system using an AOUH24KWAS3/AOUH24KWAH3 outdoor unit.

This does not mean that every home with three rooms to heat or cool should automatically receive a 24,000 BTU heat pump. Selection must always take the building’s actual loads and the manufacturer-approved combinations into account.

The mistakes we aim to avoid on a triple-zone installation

After numerous installations of wall-mounted and multi-zone heat pumps in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore, certain mistakes regularly come up when we inspect existing installations.

Among the most important:

Choosing BTUs based solely on floor area. A room with significant sun exposure and an interior room of the same size may have very different requirements.

Unnecessarily overloading the outdoor unit. The fact that a combination is permitted does not mean it is the best choice for every building.

Installing the condenser too close to the ground. In Quebec, snow and ice must be part of the planning from the outset.

Neglecting the appearance of the lines. On a triple-zone system, three poorly organized routes can quickly become highly visible on a façade.

Forgetting to allow access for service. A condenser wedged against an obstacle can turn a simple service call into a much more complex operation.

Confusing independent control with completely independent operation. The three units can offer individual settings, but the multi-zone system operates in an overall mode that is compatible with all zones.

An installation that remains accessible for HVAC maintenance

A heat pump’s longevity also depends on what happens after its installation.

Periodic HVAC maintenance makes it possible to check the condition of the indoor units, filters, heat exchangers, drainage system, and outdoor unit.

On a system with three evaporators, it is particularly important not to wait until one unit begins to show obvious signs of fouling. The three units may operate for very different lengths of time depending on the occupants’ habits.

A unit installed in the living room may operate much longer than one in a rarely used bedroom. Maintenance should therefore take into account the actual condition of each zone rather than treating all three units as perfectly identical.

Why we like this configuration for certain properties in Saint-David

This project illustrates exactly the type of situation in which a Fujitsu triple-zone heat pump becomes appealing: several spaces need to be heated and cooled, but the homeowner wants to avoid installing multiple condensers around the building.

A single outdoor unit simplifies the property's appearance and makes it possible to centralize much of the mechanical installation.

Indoors, occupants can still adjust their different zones according to how they use them.

It is this combination of indoor flexibility and fewer outdoor units that explains the popularity of multizone systems in homes in Montreal and the surrounding areas.

The invisible work matters just as much as what is visible in the photo

A well-executed outdoor installation naturally attracts attention, but the elements that truly determine long-term reliability are often invisible once the work is complete.

Line preparation, the quality of the refrigerant connections, vacuum evacuation, electrical connections, drainage, securing the indoor units, and compliance with the manufacturer's specifications are all essential steps.

With a Fujitsu Aquila XLTH triple-zone installation, these operations are repeated or coordinated across several circuits. Precision therefore becomes even more important than with a simple wall-mounted air conditioner.
