Installation of a Samsung WindFree™ MaxHeat wall-mounted heat pump in Baie-D’Urfé, in the West Island of Montreal

Replacing an old system in a confined space beneath an outdoor structure

At Baie-D’Urfé, installing this Samsung WindFree™ MaxHeat wall-mounted heat pump presented a very different challenge from a project carried out on a completely unobstructed facade. The property already had several outdoor units installed side by side beneath a raised structure. The available space was limited by the foundation wall, existing supports, neighboring units, and the low clearance above the condensers.

The photo taken before the work clearly shows the initial site conditions: several aging units, including an old Samsung unit and a GoldStar air conditioner, were mounted on wall brackets above a ground surface covered with flat stones. The units were located beneath a slab or outdoor structure that restricted the natural circulation of the warm air discharged by the condensers.

In this type of configuration, replacing a heat pump does not simply involve removing the old unit and placing the new one in the same location. We must analyze airflow, the strength of the anchors, future access to components, defrost water drainage, and the proximity of other air-conditioning systems.

At AirGreen, we therefore approached this project as a complete HVAC system modernization, rather than a simple equipment replacement.

An existing configuration that required detailed analysis

The old outdoor units had clearly been exposed to moisture, dust, and temperature fluctuations for several years. The yellowing panels, buildup of dirt on the coils, and overall condition of the electrical installations confirmed the importance of a complete inspection before connecting a new heat pump.

Our technicians specifically checked:

  • the strength of the wall and metal supports;
  • the distance between the various outdoor units;
  • the clearance available beneath the structure;
  • the condition of the wiring and electrical disconnects;
  • the routing of the refrigerant lines;
  • the ability to access the service valves;
  • the space required to remove the panels during future maintenance;
  • the drainage of water produced during defrost cycles.

This final check is particularly important for a heat pump operating during the Quebec winter. When an outdoor unit enters defrost mode, the ice accumulated on the coil melts and produces a variable amount of water. If this water remains trapped beneath the unit or freezes around its supports, it can create a block of ice, obstruct drainage, or increase vibrations.

The rocky ground visible in the photo allows some water infiltration, but it must remain sufficiently clear to prevent leaves, debris, or ice from accumulating directly beneath the unit.

Why the Samsung WindFree™ MaxHeat Was a Good Fit for This Property

The homeowner was looking for a system capable of improving comfort during the summer while providing efficient heating during cold periods. The Samsung WindFree™ MaxHeat meets this need well thanks to its variable-speed operation and its ability to modulate its output according to the room’s actual demand.

In the configuration selected for this project, the 12,000 BTU/h version offers seasonal efficiency of up to approximately 24 SEER2, depending on the exact indoor and outdoor unit pairing. It is also designed to maintain heating capacity at outdoor temperatures as low as approximately -30 °C.

This data must always be interpreted in the context of the building. A 12,000 BTU/h heat pump is not automatically suitable for all rooms of similar size. The choice also depends on:

  • the area actually being conditioned;
  • the number and size of windows;
  • solar orientation;
  • insulation level;
  • ceiling height;
  • the building’s airtightness;
  • air circulation between rooms;
  • the presence of another heating system.

In Baie-D’Urfé, several homes were built during periods when insulation standards differed from those applied today. We must therefore avoid sizing a heat pump based solely on the number of square feet.

WindFree™ technology to limit direct drafts

The WindFree™ function is one of the most appreciated features of this Samsung range. After reaching the requested temperature, the indoor unit can distribute air through numerous microperforations rather than maintaining a concentrated, high-speed air stream.

This gentler air distribution is particularly useful when the wall-mounted unit is located:

  • above a sofa;
  • near a bed;
  • facing a work table;
  • in a living room where occupants remain in the same place for long periods;
  • in a room where a direct draft quickly becomes uncomfortable.

However, WindFree™ mode does not replace a well-planned installation. The location of the indoor evaporator remains essential. We must avoid obstacles in front of the unit, maintain the recommended clearances around the cabinet, and position the unit to promote even airflow throughout the served area.

Removal of the old system and preparation of the new location

Before removing the old heat pump, we secured the electrical power supply and assessed the condition of the refrigerant circuit. When a system still contains refrigerant, it must be recovered using the appropriate equipment. It must never be released into the atmosphere.

Once the old equipment has been removed, the wall and supports become fully accessible. This step makes it possible to identify problems that were previously concealed:

  • loose screws or anchors;
  • corrosion on the supports;
  • a sagging bracket;
  • inadequately sealed wall penetration;
  • deteriorated refrigerant insulation;
  • exposed wiring;
  • vibration transmitted directly to the structure.

When replacing a system, we never assume that the existing supports can automatically be reused. Weight, depth, and the distribution of support points may vary from one model to another. The manufacturer’s recommendations must be followed to prevent chassis deformation or excessive vibration.

Particular attention to airflow beneath the structure

The main visible concern with this installation is the low ceiling above the outdoor units. A heat pump extracts or rejects a significant amount of air depending on its operating mode. If this air remains trapped in an overly enclosed area, the equipment may reabsorb some of the air it has just discharged.

This recirculation can lead to:

  • reduced efficiency;
  • increased electricity consumption;
  • longer cycles;
  • abnormal operating pressure;
  • overheating in cooling mode;
  • faster frost buildup in heating mode;
  • premature compressor wear.

We therefore checked not only the distance between the unit and the ceiling, but also the total depth of the space beneath the structure. An area open on several sides may sometimes provide sufficient ventilation despite limited height. Conversely, equipment installed beneath a balcony enclosed by side panels may encounter problems even if it appears to have adequate clearance in front of it.

The assessment must be carried out on site. The dimensions visible in a photograph alone are not enough to confirm whether a location complies with the requirements.

Preserving access to the three outdoor units

When several condensers are installed side by side, each unit must retain its own air volume and reasonable access for maintenance. The technician must be able to reach the refrigeration connections, electrical box, service valves, and side panels.

A common mistake is to install a new unit too close to an old one in order to maintain visual alignment. The installation may look neat at first glance but become very difficult to service.

At this Baie-D’Urfé property, the alignment therefore had to account for several simultaneous constraints:

  1. not block the air discharged by nearby units;
  2. maintain access to the electrical disconnects;
  3. avoid disorderly crossing of the lines;
  4. allow the panels to be removed;
  5. keep the unit high enough for winter operation;
  6. limit the transmission of vibrations to the wall.

The desired result was not merely aesthetic. It had to remain functional for years to come.

An installation designed for Baie-D’Urfé’s climate and long-term maintenance

Evacuation and protection of the refrigeration circuit

The quality of a wall-mounted heat pump installation largely depends on steps that are no longer visible once the project is complete. Evacuating the refrigeration circuit is one of these essential operations.

After connecting the copper lines, we must remove the air and moisture present in the circuit. Insufficient evacuation can leave moisture in the compressor oil and contribute to the formation of acidic contaminants. These contaminants can reduce the system’s service life.

We also perform a leak test before commissioning. Flared connections must be prepared correctly, tightened to the appropriate torque, and positioned so they are not subjected to mechanical stress.

When replacing a system, the old lines should not be reused without verification. Their diameter, internal condition, thickness, and compatibility with the new refrigerant must be confirmed. A crushed, contaminated, or incorrectly sized line can compromise the performance of a new unit.

Vibration management on wall-mounted supports

An outdoor unit mounted on a wall can transmit vibrations to the structure, especially if the wall faces a bedroom or living space. To limit this phenomenon, several elements must be checked:

  • rigidity of the supports;
  • quality of the anchors;
  • leveling of the unit;
  • presence of appropriate vibration isolators;
  • no direct contact between the pipes and the masonry;
  • correct fastening of the protective conduits.

It is not enough to add pads under the unit. If the supports are too flexible or the refrigerant lines touch a rigid surface, vibration can still be transmitted despite the isolators.

The Samsung WindFree™ MaxHeat uses a variable-speed compressor, which generally reduces the abrupt starts associated with older fixed-speed systems. The mechanical installation must nevertheless be sturdy to maintain quiet operation.

Winter clearance and snow accumulation

In Baie-D’Urfé, snow accumulation and freezing-rain events must be taken into consideration from the planning stage. Installing the unit beneath a structure provides some protection from direct precipitation. However, this protection must not interfere with ventilation.

The height of the unit above the ground must allow for:

  • drainage of defrost water;
  • temporary ice formation without blocking the base;
  • clearing snow around the unit;
  • keeping the air intake clear;
  • access to components in winter.

We recommend that homeowners never stack objects, wood, bags, or seasonal equipment in front of outdoor units. The space beneath a terrace can easily become a storage area, but a heat pump needs continuous airflow throughout its operation.

Mistakes to avoid in a similar installation

Restricted spaces beneath a balcony or terrace require more preparation. Some of the most costly mistakes include:

Installing the unit based solely on the available space

The fact that a unit can physically fit in an area does not mean it can operate properly there. Clearances must be assessed in three dimensions.

Automatically reusing old supports

A rusty support, one that is too short, or one designed for a less-deep unit must not support a new appliance without validation.

Blocking access to the disconnect

The electrical disconnect must remain accessible. It should not be hidden behind the condenser or wedged between two units.

Neglecting defrost drainage

A heating unit can produce a significant amount of water during defrost cycles. This water must be able to flow away from the base of the unit.

Installing the units too close to one another

Excessive proximity can cause air recirculation and complicate any future service work.

Keeping damaged refrigerant-line insulation

A split or UV-exposed insulation layer promotes heat loss and condensation. It must be replaced or protected.

Commissioning and operational verification

After installation, we perform a complete commissioning of the Samsung WindFree™ MaxHeat heat pump. This step includes checking the heating and cooling modes, the remote control, air temperatures, drainage, and fan operation.

We also check:

  • the absence of unusual noises;
  • the stability of the outdoor unit;
  • the condition of the electrical connections;
  • the response to setpoint changes;
  • the operation of the shutters;
  • activation of WindFree™ mode;
  • communication between the units;
  • the absence of leaks in the condensate drain.

The customer then receives the necessary explanations for using the unit efficiently. A variable-speed heat pump generally performs best when it maintains a relatively stable temperature. Frequent stops and restarts can reduce comfort and prevent the unit from fully benefiting from its modulation.

Maintenance Suited to a Dusty Environment

The stone-covered ground and the partially sheltered area visible in the photo may encourage dust, leaves, and small debris to accumulate around the units. The outdoor coil must remain clean to allow efficient heat transfer.

The homeowner should in particular:

  • regularly remove leaves around the condenser;
  • keep the front and sides of the unit clear;
  • clean the indoor unit’s filters;
  • watch for abnormal ice formation;
  • avoid using a high-pressure jet on the coil;
  • schedule professional maintenance when the unit becomes difficult to clean.

An inspection is also recommended when several systems share the same space. The operation of one unit can be affected by the condition or position of the neighboring equipment.
