In Saint-Simon, a Fujitsu triple-zone installation where every centimetre counted above a door
In this residence in Saint-Simon, our AirGreen team had to integrate a Fujitsu Aquila XLTH triple-zone heat pump into an interior where the available space for one of the wall-mounted units was particularly limited. The project photograph clearly shows the result: a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE indoor unit installed directly above a glass door, between the upper trim and the ceiling, on a wall covered with white rectangular tiles with dark grout lines.
This type of location seems simple once the work is complete. In practice, it requires considering several elements at the same time: the unit’s height, accessibility, clearance, piping route, condensate drainage, airflow into the room, and finishing around the unit.
In a triple-zone system, this consideration must then be repeated for the home’s other areas. We are not simply looking for three places to mount three indoor units. We are looking for three locations that allow the system to operate properly while respecting the building’s architecture.
The Saint-Simon project precisely illustrates this approach.
A wall-mounted unit installed above an opening: a choice that requires precision
In the photo, the Fujitsu unit occupies a relatively narrow strip of wall above the door.
The top of the unit is located close to the ceiling, while its lower section remains high enough not to encroach on the opening’s trim. This positioning also keeps the entire surface of the adjacent walls available.
In a room where wall space is already occupied by doors, windows, cabinets, or other architectural elements, the area above a door can sometimes be an excellent option for a wall-mounted heat pump. The dimensions and clearances must still allow for a compliant installation.
The visible result in Saint-Simon is particularly discreet: the white Fujitsu unit blends naturally with the door’s white trim and the wall covering.
The routing of the lines was incorporated into the installation
To the left of the indoor unit, a white line-set cover can be seen leading directly to the appliance.
This component helps organize and protect the connections required for the system to operate while maintaining a much cleaner finish than a set of exposed pipes.
Behind this type of finish may run the essential components connecting the indoor unit to the outdoor system, including the refrigerant lines and connection components required for the installation.
For a HVAC installation in Saint-Simon, the challenge is therefore not only determining where the unit will be placed. We must also determine how to reach it cleanly with the technical connections.
An excellent location becomes much less appealing if the piping route requires a complicated finish or an unnecessarily long path.
Air projection matters as much as appearance
A wall-mounted unit must be positioned so that it distributes air effectively throughout the area it serves.
In the photograph, the lower louver of the Fujitsu head is open and the unit is operating. It is positioned high up, which promotes air distribution in the space in front of it.
This is particularly important in air conditioning.
Cooled air naturally tends to descend. An appliance installed high up can therefore project air into the room before it gradually spreads throughout the space.
In heating mode, adjusting the louvers and ventilation also helps direct air toward the occupied zone rather than keeping it only near the ceiling.
In our projects in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, the South Shore, and municipalities such as Saint-Simon, we therefore always consider the actual movement of air, not just the visually most convenient location.
A triple-zone heat pump is not three devices installed at random
The term triple zone describes an architecture in which several indoor units share a compatible outdoor unit.
Fujitsu documentation on AIRSTAGE H Series Aquila multi-zone systems presents, among other options, outdoor units rated at 18,000, 24,000, 36,000, and 45,000 BTU/h, with different connection options depending on the outdoor model selected.
The document indicates, among other things, that:
- the 18,000 BTU/h platform can connect up to two indoor units;
- the 24,000 BTU/h platform can connect up to three units;
- the 36,000 BTU/h platform can accept up to four units;
- the 45,000 BTU/h platform can support up to five indoor units.
For a triple-zone project such as Saint-Simon, it is therefore necessary to select an outdoor unit compatible with three zones and, above all, correctly choose the capacity of each indoor unit.
The photograph alone does not make it possible to identify with certainty the exact capacities of the three indoor units installed for this project. We therefore prefer not to arbitrarily assign a BTU rating to the equipment shown in the photograph.
Fujitsu allows multiple indoor capacities within a single system
The H Series documentation presents various wall-mounted unit sizes, including capacities of 7,000, 9,000, 12,000, 15,000, 18,000 and 24,000 BTU/h, depending on the approved combinations.
This variety is one of the most interesting aspects of a multi-zone installation.
A house does not naturally divide into three spaces with exactly the same heating and cooling requirements.
A small bedroom may require relatively little capacity. A large open-concept area with several windows may require more. A third zone on another floor may respond differently to changes in outdoor temperature.
It would therefore make little sense to systematically choose three identical units simply because the system has three zones.
Fujitsu combination tables do not replace proper sizing
This is an important technical point in the documentation provided.
On the pages listing approved combinations, Fujitsu explicitly states that the tables are not intended to be used to select system capacity. The manufacturer recommends its Design Simulator software for selecting equipment for the AIRSTAGE H Series.
In other words, two different questions must be asked.
Firstly: can this combination of indoor units actually be connected to this outdoor unit?
Secondly: does this combination actually match the home's heating and cooling requirements?
The first answer comes from the manufacturer's tables.
The second requires an analysis of the building.
At AirGreen, we place great importance on this distinction because a technically approved combination may still be poorly suited to a specific residence.
Three comfort zones around a single Fujitsu outdoor system
Individual control of each zone
Fujitsu documentation presents multi-zone systems as a solution for individual zoning: each indoor unit can be controlled independently using its remote control.
In everyday life, this advantage is considerable.
A bedroom does not need to be set exactly like the living room. A rarely used room can maintain a different setpoint. An upper floor that accumulates more heat in summer can be adjusted separately.
The homeowner therefore gets three control zones instead of a single temperature imposed throughout the house.
For a three-zone heat pump, this adjustment capacity is one of the main reasons to choose a multi-zone system rather than a single unit intended to condition several rooms indirectly.
Heating or cooling: a limitation to know
Control is individual, but the indoor units always share the same outdoor unit.
Fujitsu documentation specifies that the systems concerned can provide heating or cooling, but not both simultaneously.
This distinction is important when explaining how a multi-zone heat pump works.
A zone can have its own setpoint and demand level, but the system generally operates in the same mode.
In the middle of a Quebec winter, all zones will normally require heating. In summer, they will mainly need cooling. In most homes, this pattern closely matches actual use.
Inverter technology suited to multi-zone systems
Fujitsu documentation also indicates that the system uses an inverter-driven compressor, that is, Inverter technology.
This modulation capacity is particularly relevant when a single outdoor unit supplies multiple zones.
Imagine how the system operates over the course of a day: a single room may require a temperature adjustment in the morning; a few hours later, two zones may be in use; then sunlight or occupancy in a room may change the load again.
The system's needs are therefore not constant.
Modulating operation allows the outdoor unit to adjust its output according to demand rather than treating every operating period as if all three zones constantly required their maximum capacity.
Up to 130% connected capacity: what it really means
The page on individual zoning also indicates that certain Fujitsu multi-zone outdoor units allow connection capacity of up to 130%.
This information must be interpreted correctly.
The manufacturer's tables also indicate that exceeding 100% in combined indoor capacity does not increase the outdoor system's output capacity.
For example, connecting several indoor units whose combined nominal capacity exceeds the condenser’s nominal capacity does not turn the condenser into an appliance that performs beyond its actual capacity.
The logic is instead based on the diversity of the loads: not all rooms necessarily require their maximum output at the same time.
This is precisely why choosing a triple-zone combination requires considering the behavior of the entire house.
Several indoor unit styles are possible
Although the project photographed in Saint-Simon shows a Fujitsu AIRSTAGE wall-mounted unit, the Aquila system presented by Fujitsu offers other possibilities.
Page 2 of the document shows four families of compatible indoor units, depending on the configurations:
wall-mounted units, Slim Duct, compact cassettes, and Mid Static Duct.
This flexibility can be particularly useful in a multi-zone project.
One zone may be equipped with a wall-mounted unit like the one visible above the door in Saint-Simon, while another zone, depending on the selected configuration and the building’s constraints, may require a more discreet or ducted solution.
The documentation does, however, specify certain limitations when Mid Static Duct units are included in the combinations. The total number of units that can be connected may then be limited according to the number of ducted units selected.
Quebec’s climate is part of the selection process
The Fujitsu document on the Aquila and Aquila CTEB series presents cold-climate heating capacity down to -26 °C for the CTEB units described in that documentation.
The zoning page also indicates that, for these versions, cooling operation is available down to 50 °C.
These characteristics explain why choosing the precise model is important when a system is expected to contribute to heating a Quebec residence.
However, we avoid automatically applying data for an entire family to every configuration without verifying the model in question.
The Aquila XLTH in the Saint-Simon project must always be evaluated using the technical data sheets corresponding exactly to the installed indoor and outdoor units.
Visual integration: a detail that matters in a finished room
Unlike an installation carried out on a wall under construction, the one visible in Saint-Simon is located in a room that is already finished and furnished.
The white tile wall covering, door frame, and ceiling were already in place. The goal was therefore to add the system without making it look as though the heat pump had been placed at random.
The unit's width fits well with that of the door below. The white line-set cover remains discreet. The AIRSTAGE casing also echoes the room's light tones.
This kind of detail greatly influences how an installation is perceived.
An HVAC unit remains a piece of technical equipment, but it is also part of the home's everyday decor. When we can combine good air distribution, accessibility, and clean integration, we avoid sacrificing one of these aspects for the benefit of the others.
Future maintenance must be considered from the outset of the installation
The proximity of an indoor unit to the ceiling or a door also requires maintaining the ability to service it.
The front panel and filters must remain accessible. A technician must be able to service the unit during future HVAC maintenance or diagnostics.
A heat pump can be perfectly installed from an aesthetic standpoint but become problematic if no space has been provided for maintenance.
That is one reason why we always inspect the entire environment before permanently securing a unit.
The best location is not necessarily the one that hides the unit the most. It is the one that allows for good airflow, a logical line-set route, proper drainage, a clean finish, and reasonable future access.
Common mistakes to avoid with a triple-zone heat pump
A multi-zone installation involves enough variables that certain errors can have consequences for many years.
Among those we seek to avoid:
- choosing the capacity of the three indoor units based solely on floor area;
- automatically installing three identical heads;
- confusing an authorized Fujitsu combination with thermal sizing;
- placing a unit too close to an obstacle that blocks airflow;
- neglecting access to filters and components;
- creating an unnecessarily complex line-set route;
- forgetting that a multi-zone system cannot heat one zone and cool another simultaneously;
- assuming that 130% connected capacity means 130% of the capacity actually produced.
These details are essential when a homeowner compares several heat pump quotes in Saint-Simon or Greater Montreal.
What the Saint-Simon photo really shows about our work
At first glance, this image simply shows a Fujitsu unit above a door.
But it also reveals the logic behind a good HVAC installation.
The available space was limited. The unit had to integrate with a finished wall covering. The technical routing had to remain discreet. The appliance had to be high enough to clear the door without being installed without regard for the ceiling. And its location had to allow effective air projection into the zone.
Multiplying this consideration by three gives a better idea of the work required for a Fujitsu Aquila XLTH triple-zone heat pump.

Fujitsu documentation confirms the great flexibility of the AIRSTAGE Aquila system: multiple outdoor capacities, several indoor unit formats, up to five zones on certain platforms, and numerous authorized combinations.
This flexibility is an advantage, but it also makes the design more important.
The more options there are, the more important it is to select the right ones.
A successful triple-zone project is judged room by room
For a homeowner considering a triple-zone heat pump, we recommend not limiting the inquiry to the total price or the overall BTU capacity.
It is more useful to ask which unit will be installed in each zone, why that location was selected, how the piping will be routed, and how the outdoor capacity will be distributed among the indoor units.
The Saint-Simon project is a good example.
The unit visible in the photo was integrated into a very specific architectural area, directly above a door, with a discreet piping route and sufficient clearance for operation. The other units in the system must be planned with the same care, because each serves its own space while sharing the same outdoor unit.
This is how we approach a Fujitsu Aquila XLTH triple-zone heat pump installation: not as three separate appliances, but as a single system in which each zone must contribute to the overall comfort of the residence.
