A wall-mounted heat pump installed in a tight space where every centimetre mattered
At Otterburn Park, this installation of a MIDEA 28 triple-zone heat pump represents exactly the type of project where the quality of the work is visible in the details. In the photo of our installation, one of the MIDEA wall-mounted units is positioned very close to the ceiling and immediately beside a wall return. The available space is limited, the geometry of the room imposes its own constraints, and the routing of the lines must remain discreet.
The result looks simple: a white wall-mounted unit, a short transition to the left, almost no visible piping, and a unit that blends naturally into the wall. However, achieving this appearance requires much more preparation than installing a unit on a large, completely unobstructed wall.
For this project, we installed a MIDEA 28 triple-zone system, meaning a single outdoor heat pump supplying three separate indoor units. The MIDEA multi-zone system is designed to connect several indoor units to a single outdoor unit in order to heat or cool different areas of the property. Each indoor unit can have its own temperature setting.
For this residence inOtterburn Park, this choice made it possible to serve several areas of the house without installing three separate outdoor condensers or building a complete central duct network.
What the photo reveals about this AirGreen installation
The photograph taken after the installation shows several interesting elements that are not necessarily found in a standard installation.
The MIDEA unit is installed high up, where the wall meets a projection or architectural return on the left. We therefore had to work with a very precise amount of actual available width. A positioning error of just a few centimetres could have made the unit look unbalanced, complicated the routing of the lines, or reduced the necessary access around the unit.
The connection exits from the left side and quickly reaches the adjacent section. This avoids a long visible run beneath the unit. In a room where the walls remain largely visible, this detail considerably improves the finish.
The active digital display on the front of the unit is also visible, showing “60” when the photo was taken, along with the lower louver open to distribute the air. This lets us see the unit operating rather than simply seeing a unit mounted on the wall before it is commissioned.
Why installing a wall-mounted unit near a corner requires greater precision
A wall-mounted air conditioner or a wall-mounted heat pump needs room to breathe. The surrounding air is drawn in, passes through the filters and heat exchanger, and is then redistributed throughout the room. So it is not enough to find a rectangle of wall that is large enough.
Before securing the unit, we check in particular:
- the required clearances for the unit;
- the ability to open the panel properly to clean the filters;
- the airflow direction;
- the route of the refrigerant lines;
- the path of the communication cable;
- condensate drainage;
- the presence of structure behind the wall;
- the possibility of eventually carrying out a HVAC maintenance or a repair;
- the aesthetic impact of the finishing conduit.
In a configuration like the one observed in Otterburn Park, the left side of the unit is near an architectural feature. We must therefore determine the location before drilling the wall, not afterward.
This is an important difference between simply “hanging a heat pump” and planning a true HVAC installation.
Drainage: the invisible part that can cause the most visible problems
In cooling mode, an indoor unit removes moisture from the air. This moisture turns into water on the coil and then must be discharged through the condensate drain.
When we design a particularly short or discreet route like the one shown in the photo, we must maintain proper drainage while taking the existing structure into account.
A poor drain can cause:
- draining sounds;
- water accumulation in the drain pan;
- odors;
- moisture around the unit;
- leaks on the wall;
- damage to the interior finish.
That is why we never determine the route based solely on its appearance. Drainage reliability remains a priority.
The best result is one where the homeowner never thinks about the drain because it works properly year after year.
A single outdoor unit for three comfort zones
The greatest benefit of this MIDEA 28 triple-zone heat pump lies in the distribution of comfort.
The MIDEA system is designed to allow individual control of the indoor units. The manufacturer particularly highlights the ability to heat or cool the spaces being used rather than systematically imposing the same demand on the entire home.
For a home in Otterburn Park, this can be particularly useful when needs differ between:
- a bedroom and an open-concept area;
- an upper floor and a basement;
- a room with significant sun exposure and another facing north;
- an office occupied during the day and a bedroom used mainly at night.
However, three zones do not mean three completely independent heat pumps. The three indoor units share a single outdoor unit. Sizing the complete system is therefore much more important than it may seem.
Why we never choose the three indoor capacities at random
A common mistake with multi-zone systems is to believe that it is enough to choose the largest possible unit for each room.
That is not our approach.
An oversized unit can quickly reach its setpoint without providing the desired modulating operation. Conversely, an undersized head may run for a long time without adequately meeting requirements during more demanding temperatures.
With three zones, we must also consider the capacity available from the outdoor unit.
MIDEA documentation specifies that when the total demand of the indoor units exceeds the outdoor unit's rated capacity, the actual capacity available to each unit may be reduced, particularly in heating mode.
This manufacturer's comment is fundamental.
Therefore, we do not look only at the BTUs displayed on each of the three units. We evaluate the operation of the complete combination.
MIDEA combinations make it possible to adapt the units to different rooms
The MIDEA technical brochure shows that multi-zone configurations can use different indoor capacities. For the three-connection system presented in the combination table, wall-mounted units of 6,000, 9,000, 12,000, or 18,000 BTU/h are among the available options, along with possibilities for certain cassette, console, or ducted formats.
This allows us to adapt each area more precisely.
A small bedroom does not automatically need the same capacity as a large common area. Even in a relatively compact home, the windows, exposure, insulation level, and ceiling height can create very different loads.

MIDEA 28: efficiency, Inverter technology, and technical criteria to know before installation
Inverter technology responds to constantly changing demand
A home never requires exactly the same amount of heating throughout the day.
Sunlight enters through the windows. An exterior door opens. The outdoor temperature rises or falls. One bedroom is no longer occupied. Another zone requires more heating.
The Inverter technology of the MIDEA multi-zone system adjusts capacity by changing how the compressor and fan motors operate. When demand is lower, the system can operate at partial load instead of continuously running at maximum capacity.
In a three-zone installation, this modulation is particularly meaningful.
It is common for the three spaces not to need exactly the same amount of energy at the same time.
A concrete example of certified performance in the MIDEA range
To understand the possible performance of this platform, the table of the page 10 of the MIDEA brochure provides a three-zone Extreme Heat combination using three 6,000 BTU/h All Easy Pro units with the outdoor unit MO3HX-H18B-2A. This combination bears the number AHRI 215471457.
For this specific combination, the documentation indicates, among other things:
- power supply 208/230 V, single-phase, 60 Hz;
- rated capacity of 19,000 BTU/h cooling capacity;
- rated capacity of 20,000 BTU/h heating capacity;
- SEER2 of 25;
- EER2 of 15;
- heating rating indicated at 10,4 in the table;

heating capacity of 19,000 BTU/h at 5 °F, or approximately -15 °C.
These figures show the level of efficiency that certain combinations in the range can achieve.
However, it is important not to automatically attribute this performance to any three-zone configuration. The head capacities, exact condenser model, and AHRI combination determine the certified values.
The Otterburn Park photo does not allow the indoor unit’s nameplate to be read precisely enough, and the outdoor unit is not visible. We therefore do not present these figures as the exact specifications of the photographed head, but as a documented certified example from the MIDEA multi-zone range.
ENERGY STAR and rebates: verify the combination before promising an amount
Homeowners shopping for a heat pump in Otterburn Park, in Montreal or elsewhere in Quebec, often look at three factors at the same time: installation cost, potential energy savings, and financial assistance programs.
It is therefore essential to distinguish between an appliance’s commercial name and the complete certified combination.
The MIDEA brochure contains specific ENERGY STAR combination tables for the various multi-zone units.
It also associates different combinations with their own AHRI references. For example, the table on page 10 does not assign the same AHRI number to a three-zone system as to a four-, five-, or six-zone configuration.

The documentation presents units wall-mounted, consoles, cassettes, ceiling-floor units, and ducted units, as well as air-handling equipment. The system is presented as compatible with configurations with or without ducts.
Page 4 of the brochure also illustrates a residential range comprising several indoor unit formats rather than a single wall-mounted model.
This diversity gives us more options when the architecture imposes a constraint.
In Otterburn Park, the wall-mounted unit shown in the photo suited the available space. In another room or building, a cassette or ducted unit may sometimes be a better option.
SynchroConnect and the hidden complexity behind three refrigerant circuits
A triple-zone heat pump has multiple connections between the outdoor and indoor units.
Each zone involves, among other things, its own refrigerant circuit and communication connections. When several sets of lines arrive at the same condenser, identification must be rigorous.
MIDEA describes the function in its documentation SynchroConnect, which can diagnose connection pairings and synchronize the refrigerant lines with the associated wiring in certain configurations.
This function obviously does not relieve the installer of the need to work methodically. Rather, it provides additional protection and a verification tool during commissioning.

The mistakes we avoid with a triple-zone heat pump
After many heat pump installations in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore, and the South Shore, we find that the same mistakes often recur when the system was selected or installed without sufficient planning.
Install the unit only where it is easiest to mount
A wall that is convenient for the installer is not always the best choice for the homeowner.

Oversize each zone “just to be sure”
Adding BTUs without calculating the requirements is not a guarantee of comfort.
A multi-zone configuration must be balanced.
Forget that the zones share the same outdoor unit
Three wall-mounted units do not create three independent capacity reserves. The outdoor unit must supply the entire system.
Neglect the drain in favor of a more attractive finish
We want both: a clean finish and reliable drainage.
Make the filters difficult to access
A heat pump must be maintained for years. The ability to open the unit and properly clean its filters is therefore part of our considerations from the day of installation.
Maintaining a unit installed in a restricted space
The head unit visible in our Otterburn Park photo particularly illustrates the importance of this last point.
The unit is located in a space where the ceiling and wall return limit the available clearance. Even when the installation is compact, we must preserve the necessary access предусмотрено for the use and servicing of the unit.

The unit must start up, maintain the requested temperature, drain its condensate properly, and blend naturally into the home.
