Installation of a GREE FreeMatch R32 two-head wall-mounted heat pump in Saint-Amable

The permit does not wait until the work is finished, and neither does the heat pump.

The kitchen was half finished when we arrived. The ceiling drywall stopped abruptly against a bare rough-wood beam, the floating shelves already held cups and spice jars, the stepladder had not left the room for three weeks, and the homeowner was expecting two different tradespeople during the same week as us.

This is a common situation in Saint-Amable, where the residential housing stock from the 1980s is reaching the age of major renovations in large numbers. It is also the situation in which homeowners are most often called to account by the municipality—not for the quality of the work, but for its sequence. So we handled this project as it should have been handled: compliance first, then the layout, and only then the equipment.

What Saint-Amable's bylaw really says about when work begins

The City of Saint-Amable's permits and certificates bylaw is numbered 699-00-2012, with an administrative codification current as of 2025. Section 5(b) states the obligation to obtain the required permit or certificate of authorization before starting the work. The City repeats this on its own construction and renovation page. This is not a decorative rule: it determines whether your project is legal on Monday morning.

Section 21(b) of the same bylaw provides an exemption for minor work whose cost remains below 10 000 $provided that they do not affect the structure, foundations, or partitions. A kitchen opened up, like our client's, falls outside this exemption as soon as the first partition is moved. Many property owners calculate the exemption based solely on the amount and overlook the second half of the sentence.

The zoning bylaw is numbered 712-00-2013. It contains Article 129, titled “Mechanical equipment, tank, ventilation duct.” This is the article governing the location of your outdoor unit. We do not publish its text: the current codification can be consulted through the Planning Department, and a blog post is not a regulatory source. Require every bidder to carry out the same verification and tell you what response they received.

What concerns us here is something else: not how long the permit takes, but the order in which the work must proceed once it has been issued.

The constraint the neighbours will enforce

Saint-Amable has a bylaw on nuisances and public peace, 693-00-2012, whose Article 46 specifically names noise from heat pumps, air conditioners, pumps, filters, and fans.

Two practical rather than technical points emerge from this.

  • The measurement is taken at the property line from which the noise originates, not at the base of the unit or on the neighbour's property. Article 46.1 sets the general threshold at 53 dB(A).
  • Article 46.1.1 then specifies thresholds by zone: 50 dB in a residential zone, 55 dB in a commercial zone, and 60 dB in an industrial zone.

What this changes in a quote: the location of the outdoor unit is not merely a matter of piping convenience. On a narrow suburban lot, the property line may be only a few metres from the façade, and the compliant location is not always the shortest route. That is exactly what happened here, and it determined the model we installed.

A third provision is worth knowing for anyone renovating: Article 52 prohibits construction work between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. A job that runs into the evening to make up for a delay risks an infraction notice, regardless of the urgency.

The selected configuration, and why the outdoor unit is larger than the total connected load

We installed a GWHD(42)ND6MO outdoor unit connected to two wall-mounted indoor units: one rated at 15,000 BTU/h for the large kitchen-dining-living area, and one rated at 12,000 BTU/h for the bedroom zone, for a total connected capacity of 27,000 BTU/h.

The chassis is rated at 42,000 BTU/h in cooling and 44,300 BTU/h in heating. Our two indoor units therefore represent approximately 64%. We will say it plainly: this is not the usual selection logic, nor was capacity what dictated the choice.

The reason is the routing. Given the measurement point at the property line and the rules applicable to mechanical equipment, the compliant location for the outdoor unit was at the corner farthest from the house. The result: 71 metres of total piping for the two branches. The GWHD(42) is the only unit in the FreeMatch series precharged for 50 metres, with a maximum allowable total length of 100 metres and a maximum elevation difference of 25 metres. Our 71 metres exceeded the precharge length by 21 metres, requiring 420 grams of additional R-32 at a rate of twenty grams per excess metre, bringing the circuit charge to 3,120 grams. With a chassis precharged for 30 or 40 metres, the same routing would have been non-compliant with the manual before the first hole was drilled.

In other words, the municipal bylaw chose the location, the location chose the length, and the length chose the compressor. That is the actual order of decisions on a constrained site, and it is the opposite of what quick quotes suggest.

The model's other useful specifications are: a minimum modulation capacity of 8,870 BTU/h, an EER of 3.81 and a COP of 3.90, a weight of 79 kilograms, an MCA of 30 amps, an MOCP of 45 amps, and AHRI certifications 214931590, 214931596, and 214931600.

Regarding the unused capacity, we will not repeat the argument here: we developed it in detail on our Beaconsfield and Sainte-Hélène-de-Bagot pages, where we explain why an available port is not the same as a feasible third zone, and why the handover file must state in writing whether a port remains available and where the line would run.

R-32 and room area

R-32 belongs to the A2L class, meaning it is mildly flammable. The practical consequence is unique and non-negotiable: the required minimum area for each room served is calculated based on the final circuit charge, including the 420 grams added, not the value printed at the factory. On a run this long, the difference is not insignificant. We recalculate it after charging, never before, and a room that is too small must be addressed by changing the unit or the distribution—not by turning a blind eye.

Two normal behaviors are worth knowing because they generate unnecessary service calls: on a unit equipped with an A2L sensor, the indoor fan may start on its own even when the unit is turned off; and certain household aerosols are enough to trigger an alarm even when there is no leak whatsoever.

An indoor unit above a countertop is first and foremost a water issue

Here is the point the photo conveys better than a quote. The indoor unit is mounted high on the kitchen wall. Below it, in order, are open shelves loaded with dishes, spice jars, and food supplies, a coffee grinder, a backsplash, and a countertop. There is not a single square inch beneath this unit that can tolerate a drop.

An air-conditioning evaporator produces condensate continuously. This condensate leaves the unit by gravity through a pipe that must slope downward without any backpitch along its entire route. That is simple when the indoor unit is on an exterior wall and the ground is lower than the unit. That was not the case here.

We are not addressing drain blockages, their causes, or their warning signs here: we devoted an entire page to them for Saint-Basile-le-Grand. The subject of this installation is different and arises earlier: what to do when gravity drainage is not available.

Gravity or condensate pump: the choice must be made before drilling

When the unit cannot be drained by gravity—an interior wall, a lowered ceiling, a beam to work around, or an outlet higher than the indoor unit—there is the condensate pump, a small device that draws condensate into a reservoir and pumps it to a drain point. It is a perfectly legitimate solution. It comes with requirements that few quotes spell out.

  • The safety float must be connected and shut off the unit. A pump that clogs or stops working without shutting off the heat pump turns a reservoir holding a few decilitres into water damage above a countertop. A high-level contact is available on reputable pumps; it still needs to be wired.
  • The check valve prevents the discharge column from flowing back into the reservoir each time the pump stops, which would cause short cycling and premature wear.
  • The discharge point must be an actual discharge point, not a pipe that ends inside a wall cavity or above a suspended ceiling.
  • The pump is a wear item and a maintenance point. Its reservoir needs to be cleaned. It is not covered by the heat pump manufacturer's warranty because it is not part of the heat pump.
  • It makes a noise intermittently, for a few seconds at a time, up to several dozen times a day. In an open kitchen, it is noticeable. This needs to be explained beforehand, not afterward.

We always prioritize gravity drainage whenever possible, even if that means moving the indoor unit one bay over or routing the piping through another side. Here, gravity drainage was possible because we were able to decide where to drill while the ceiling was still open, which brings us back to the first part of this article.

The mistakes we see most often on a renovation site

  • Have the heat pump installed last. The unit is then installed in a finished room, and every routing decision comes at the cost of drywall repairs and painting. The right time is when the walls and ceiling are still open.
  • Have the heat pump installed first and let the work continue around it. Drywall dust and paint aerosols settle on a new coil.   • Do not designate anyone as responsible for coordination. When a general contractor, an electrician, a drywall finisher, and an HVAC installation contractor are working during the same week, someone needs to manage the schedule. It does not necessarily have to be us, but it must be someone, and that person must be named in the contract.
  • Assume that finishing around the unit is included. We drill, seal, and install; joint compound application, sanding, and painting are handled by other trades. We explain this in detail on our Saint-Lambert page.
  • Choose the outdoor unit's location based on the pipe length. In Saint-Amable, the property line is what determines it, as we have just seen.

Saint-Amable at a glance

The parish was established on June 13, 1921, and was named after Father Amable Prévost (1757–1820), who served as parish priest of Beloeil from 1816 to 1820. The municipality became a city on October 26, 2019. It had 13,585 residents in the 2021 census over an area of 36 square kilometres, approximately 90% of which is agricultural land, about thirty kilometres from Montreal. Its population is remarkably young: children under fifteen account for 22.7% of residents. It is a city of first homes and first renovations, which explains the volume of projects we see there.
