Where does the air go?

01The packaged unit explained

One cabinet outside, ducts inside the house

A regular central heat pump has two units: one outside, one in the house. A packaged unit puts everything in the outdoor cabinet. It blows heated or cooled air into your ducts and takes return air back through other ducts.

Daikin does not publish a minimum operating temperature for these series. Its DP16HM installation manual (IOD-3018B, 01/20) recommends backup heat below 45 °F (7.2 °C) and lists EH electric heat kits from 5 to 20 kW.

SEER2 or SEER: compare like with like

The DP5 and DP3 series are rated with the SEER2 / HSPF2 method. The DP16 and DP14 series only have original SEER / HSPF ratings. The two methods do not give the same numbers: the tool refuses to mix them.

Documented example: the 5-ton DP16HM, installation manual IOD-3018B (01/20). The other series have their own manual; details are confirmed at quotation time.

Which Daikin thermostat for which system

Daikin’s DP16HM installation manual calls for a 24 V thermostat. The ONE+ and ONE touch are built for communicating Daikin equipment: no Daikin document we checked lists them for our packaged units. Compatibility is confirmed on quotation.

Frequently asked questions about Daikin

What is a packaged heat pump?

A unit that puts compressor, coils and blower in one outdoor cabinet. It connects to the house ductwork, with no indoor unit.

HH or HM: what is the difference?

In the Daikin code, HH means horizontal airflow only; HM means multi-position, horizontal or downflow. Both are heat pumps.

Which size do I need?

Our Daikin packaged units go from 2 to 5 tons. The size is confirmed at the on-site estimate, based on the building and the ducts.

Are these packaged units eligible for LogisVert?

No. As of October 13, 2026, none of the Daikin packaged units offered here is on Hydro-Québec’s LogisVert list or in the ENERGY STAR database.

Which refrigerant do they use?

All 48 models offered use R-410A: that is the “4” at the end of the “41” code.

Do they heat in very cold weather?

Daikin publishes the heat delivered at 17 °F (-8.3 °C) for the DP3 and DP5 series, but no minimum temperature. Its DP16HM manual recommends backup heat below 45 °F (7.2 °C).

What is the Daikin warranty?

12 years on parts with registration (5 years without). For DP5 and DP16, one-time unit replacement within 6 years if the compressor fails, with conditions. Labour is not covered by Daikin.

Must the warranty be registered in Québec?

In Québec, the DP5 and DP16 certificate gives the registered coverage without registration. For DP3 and DP14, Daikin points to its list of places, which includes Québec.

Which thermostat should I choose?

The DP16HM manual calls for a 24 V thermostat. The compatible model is confirmed on quotation.

What power supply is needed?

208/230 V single-phase for all 48 models (the “1” in the “41” code). For DP3 and DP5, the Daikin sheet gives the minimum circuit ampacity and maximum fuse for each size.

Where does a packaged unit go?

Outside, on the ground or on a flat roof, near where the ducts enter the house. The DP16HM manual recommends 48 in of clearance around the unit.

Why two kinds of ratings, SEER2 and SEER?

The DP5 and DP3 series have recent sheets rated SEER2 / HSPF2. The DP16 and DP14 series only have their original SEER / HSPF ratings. The numbers do not compare directly.
