Quick facts
48 kW on single phase: the largest BTH ULTRA XL on 240 V
First, the electrical question
At 48 kW on 240 V single phase, the BTH ULTRA XL draws 200 A on its own, per Thermo 2000. Before even talking about heating, you need to know whether the building’s electrical service can carry that load on top of the lighting, ventilation and other equipment. The manufacturer gives a maximum supply wire size of 350 MCM; circuit protection is set according to the electrical code. If the building has three-phase power, the BTH ULTRA XL also comes in 480 V and 600 V.
What the 48 kW BTH ULTRA XL is
It is the largest 240 V model in Thermo 2000’s commercial line, which the specification document calls the BTH ULTRA XL 2.0. Eight 6 kW elements, controlled in four stages, produce 163,776 BTU/h according to the manufacturer. The boiler, made of steel and insulated with 2 in fibreglass, holds 8 US gal (30 L) of water, weighs 180 lb and measures 23 3/8 x 12 3/4 x 23 1/4 in (W x D x H). It mounts on the wall or on the floor on an optional stand.
It suits buildings heated by a hot-water loop that only have a single-phase service: places of worship, community halls, schools, good-sized apartment buildings, businesses. Thermo 2000 also presents it as backup for a heat pump or a geothermal system.
A parish hall on the South Shore, for example
A parish hall on the South Shore, heated by large radiators, is only used a few days a week. The T2 UltraSmart controller proves useful there: it modulates output based on demand, sets the water temperature with the supplied outdoor sensor and stops heating in mild weather, within a 0 to 105 °F range. Boost mode and pump purge are also among its functions. For safety, the manufacturer provides the low water cut-off with test button and indicator lights, the 30 psi (ASME) relief valve, two limit controls and fuses.
What our installation includes
We start with a free on-site estimate focused on the electrical service, the loop and the emitters. The written quote specifies the boiler, the floor stand where applicable, the circulator and the expansion tank, which are not among the supplied items. Our technicians then install the boiler, connect the piping in 1 1/2 in NPT and the electrical circuit, fill and purge the loop, then set up the controller. Thermo 2000 covers the tank for 10 years (limited warranty, closed-loop heating) and the electrical and mechanical components for 2 years (parts and accessories).

What to know before installing
- 240 V single-phase, 60 Hz power: 200 A for the boiler alone, per Thermo 2000. The electrical service must carry this load on top of the building’s other equipment.
- Supply wire up to 350 MCM, per Thermo 2000; circuit protection follows the electrical code.
- For a building on 480 V or 600 V three-phase, the BTH ULTRA XL also comes in those voltages.
- The circulator and expansion tank are not on the list of supplied items: the quote specifies them.
- 30 psi relief valve (ASME)
- Drain valve
- Outdoor sensor
- Low water cut-off
- Temperature and pressure gauge
- Fittings and reducers

Frequently asked questions
Can my building supply a 200 A boiler?
That is the first thing we check. Thermo 2000 lists 200 A on 240 V single phase for this model. During the free estimate, we record the capacity of the electrical service and the existing load.
Is there a three-phase version?
Yes, the BTH ULTRA XL also comes in 480 V and 600 V three-phase. If your building has three-phase power, we tell you which version fits.
What does Thermo 2000 supply with the boiler?
A 30 psi (ASME) relief valve, a drain valve, the outdoor sensor, the low water cut-off, a temperature and pressure gauge, and fittings and reducers.
How much space is needed?
The cabinet measures 23 3/8 x 12 3/4 x 23 1/4 in (W x D x H) and weighs 180 lb. It mounts on the wall or on the floor on an optional stand.
What is the warranty?
Thermo 2000 offers a 10-year limited warranty on the tank (closed-loop heating, residential and commercial) and 2 years on electrical and mechanical components (parts and accessories).
