Quick facts
60 kW on 480 V, as main heating or as backup for a renewable source
Two roles for one commercial boiler
The BTH ULTRA XL is Thermo 2000’s commercial line of electric boilers, named the BTH ULTRA XL 2.0 in its specification document. The manufacturer presents it both as a commercial heating boiler and as backup for a heat pump, a geothermal or a solar system. The 60 kW, 480 V three-phase model brings together twelve 5 kW, 277 V elements, controlled in four stages, for 204,720 BTU/h according to Thermo 2000.
It is meant for office buildings, institutional buildings, warehouses and workshops whose electrical distribution is 480 V and that heat with hot water, whether through radiators, baseboards or a radiant slab.
Backing up a geothermal system on the North Shore
Think of an institutional building on the North Shore heated by a geothermal system connected to a hot-water loop. In deep cold, or while the geothermal system is being serviced, an electric source takes over. The 60 kW BTH ULTRA XL can fill that role; the loop connection and the controls of both sources are designed with the whole system, and we study them before proposing the setup.
On the electrical side, Thermo 2000 lists 72.2 A on 480 V three-phase and a supply wire of up to 2/0; circuit protection is set according to the electrical code. On the water side, the boiler holds 8 US gal (30 L), connects with 1 1/2 in male NPT fittings and works up to 30 psi (207 kPa). It measures 23 3/8 x 12 3/4 x 23 1/4 in (W x D x H), weighs 180 lb and mounts on the wall or on the floor on an optional stand.
Controls and safety
The T2 UltraSmart controller modulates output based on demand and water temperature based on the supplied outdoor sensor, with warm weather shutdown adjustable within a 0 to 105 °F range, a Boost mode and a pump purge. For safety, Thermo 2000 includes a low water cut-off with test button and indicator lights, a 30 psi (ASME) relief valve, two limit controls and fuses.
What our installation includes
The on-site estimate is free: we look at the voltage, the panel, the loop and, where applicable, the other heat source. The written quote specifies the boiler and the parts outside the list of supplied items, such as the circulator and the expansion tank. Our technicians install the boiler, connect the piping and the 480 V circuit, fill and purge the loop, then set up the controller. Thermo 2000 covers the tank for 10 years (limited warranty, closed-loop heating) and the electrical and mechanical components for 2 years (parts and accessories).
