Quick facts
48 kW for buildings supplied at 600 V three-phase
The 48 kW BTH ULTRA XL on 600 V
The BTH ULTRA XL, called the BTH ULTRA XL 2.0 in Thermo 2000’s specification document, is the manufacturer’s commercial line of electric boilers. On 600 V three-phase, it comes in 48, 60 and 72 kW. This first size produces 163,776 BTU/h according to Thermo 2000, with 347 V elements controlled in four stages, and draws only 46.2 A.
It is meant for managers of apartment buildings, residences, institutional buildings and businesses supplied at 600 V that heat with a hot-water loop. Thermo 2000 also presents it as backup for a heat pump, a geothermal or a solar system.
A seniors’ residence in Longueuil, for example
In a seniors’ residence in Longueuil, heating cannot fail. The building is supplied at 600 V, like many buildings of that size in Quebec, and each room has its own hot-water radiators. The 48 kW BTH ULTRA XL connects to a circuit whose protection is set according to the electrical code, with a supply wire of up to 2/0 per Thermo 2000.
For this kind of occupant, steady heat matters. The T2 UltraSmart controller modulates output based on demand and sets the water temperature using the supplied outdoor sensor; warm weather shutdown is set within a 0 to 105 °F range. Boost mode and pump purge round out its functions. For safety, Thermo 2000 includes a low water cut-off with test button and indicator lights, a 30 psi (ASME) relief valve, two limit controls and fuses.
Size and connections
The boiler measures 23 3/8 x 12 3/4 x 23 1/4 in (W x D x H), weighs 180 lb and holds 8 US gal (30 L) of water. It mounts on the wall or sits on the floor on an optional stand. Its water connections are 1 1/2 in male NPT; the relief valve and drain connect in 1 1/2 in MPT reduced to 3/4 in FPT. Maximum working pressure is 30 psi (207 kPa).
Our installation
The on-site estimate is free: 600 V panel, loop, emitters and existing boiler. The written quote specifies the boiler, the floor stand where applicable, the circulator and the expansion tank, which are not on the list of supplied items. Our technicians schedule the work to limit the heating interruption, install the boiler, connect the piping and the circuit, fill and purge the loop, then set up the controller. Thermo 2000 covers the tank for 10 years (limited warranty, closed-loop heating) and the electrical and mechanical components for 2 years (parts and accessories).

Frequently asked questions
Is this boiler suited to an apartment building?
Yes, if the building is supplied at 600 V three-phase and 48 kW covers its heat load. We do that calculation during the free estimate, based on the loop, the emitters and the building.
How much current does it draw?
46.2 A on 600 V three-phase, per Thermo 2000, with a supply wire of up to 2/0. Circuit protection follows the electrical code.
Does heating stop when the weather is mild?
Yes. With the supplied outdoor sensor, the T2 UltraSmart controller stops heating in mild weather; Thermo 2000 gives a setting range of 0 to 105 °F.
What does Thermo 2000 supply with the boiler?
A 30 psi (ASME) relief valve, a drain valve, the outdoor sensor, the low water cut-off, a temperature and pressure gauge, and fittings and reducers.
What is the warranty?
Thermo 2000 offers a 10-year limited warranty on the tank (closed-loop heating, residential and commercial) and 2 years on electrical and mechanical components (parts and accessories).
