Hot water with no wait at the farthest tap, thanks to a 6 US gallon tank

In a large home or a commercial space, a sink or washbasin is sometimes located far from the main water heater. Every time it is used, the cold water sitting in the piping has to run before the hot water arrives. The Bradford White RE16U6-1NAL electric water heater solves this at the source: this small 6 US gallon (5 imperial gallon, 23 L) tank is installed right next to the point of use and supplies hot water almost instantly. It runs on 120 V with a 1,500 W element. AirGreen installs it in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the South Shore and on the North Shore.

The point-of-use water heater principle

A point-of-use water heater does not replace the home's main tank. It serves a single sink or a small group of fixtures in the same spot. Since the hot water only has a few feet of pipe to travel, it reaches the tap without delay, and cold water is no longer wasted while waiting. This type of unit is also useful in a building where a sink is added far from any hot water supply: it avoids running a long hot water line through walls or ceilings.

Where it comes in handy

The RE16U6-1NAL is the smallest of the residential tanks in this Bradford White line. It suits a kitchen island far from the main tank, an office kitchenette, a basement bar, the washbasin of a powder room added during a renovation, or the utility sink of a commercial space. At 14 in. in diameter and 16 3/16 in. tall, it can often fit in a cabinet under the sink or in a nearby closet; we measure the space and the access to the connections before confirming the location. It is not meant to supply a shower or a bath: its reserve is designed for handwashing, dishes and cleaning.

A single 1,500 W element at 120 V

The RE16U6-1NAL is shipped wired for 120 V with a single 1,500 W element. This configuration lets it run on a 120 V circuit, without the two-pole circuit a large tank requires. Bradford White also offers the series in 208 V, 240 V, 277 V and 480 V, single-phase only, but for this model the wattage never exceeds 3,000 W, regardless of voltage. In the vast majority of cases, the factory configuration is the right one. We provide a dedicated circuit and check the capacity of the electrical panel before installation.

What to expect from 6 US gallons

A small reserve empties quickly if the water is left running for a long time, after which the element reheats it at a rate of 7 US gallons per hour for a 90 °F rise. For handwashing, rinsing dishes or cleaning a counter, this is more than enough, since each use takes only a fraction of the reserve. If the sink is used to fill large pots or to feed an appliance that uses a lot of hot water, we steer you toward a larger size in the same line instead.

Construction and compliance

The tank is protected by Bradford White's Vitraglas with Microban lining. The element is immersed and screwed in, so it can be replaced without changing the tank, and the factory-installed dielectric fittings limit corrosion between the tank and the copper piping. According to the manufacturer, all models in the series are UL listed, and applicable models are verified by CSA for energy performance under standard C191.1-M90.

Manufacturer's warranty

The RE16U6-1NAL is covered by a 6-year limited warranty on the tank and 6 years on parts. The detailed terms are provided with the quote.

Installation of the Bradford White RE16U6-1NAL by AirGreen

AirGreen is a family-owned heating and cooling company established in Montreal, active for more than fifteen years. Electrical connections are made under our RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, which covers ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. After a free on-site estimate, you receive a written quote. Installation includes:

  • choosing the location as close as possible to the tap served, with access for maintenance;
  • removing the old small tank, where applicable;
  • connecting the cold and hot water in 3/4 in. NPT;
  • installing the relief valve and its discharge line;
  • the 120 V electrical connection on a dedicated circuit;
  • filling the tank completely before powering it up, then setting the temperature;
  • maintenance and usage advice.

Maintenance and safety

Even a small tank must be filled with water before it is powered up, otherwise the element can burn out within seconds. It is the first thing we check at commissioning. After that, we recommend a partial flush once a year to remove sediment, especially if the water is hard, along with a test of the relief valve. If the tank is installed inside a cabinet, keep the access clear so it can be inspected.

Service area

We install this water heater in Montreal, Laval and Longueuil, as well as in Outremont, Verdun, Pointe-Claire, Brossard, Saint-Lambert and everywhere on the South Shore and the North Shore. When it is part of a larger renovation project, our financing lets you spread out the cost.
