THERMO 2000 DOUBLEMAX 50-4 Indirect Water Heater (50 gallons) | Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, South Shore & North Shore
A 50 US gallon double-wall indirect water heater for homes heated by an electric boiler
You heat your home with an electric boiler and radiant floors or radiators, and your old electric water heater takes up a corner of the basement. The Thermo 2000 DoubleMax 50-4 indirect water heater brings the two functions together: the boiler heats the house and produces hot water through a double-wall copper heat exchanger housed in a 50 US gallon tank. AirGreen installs it in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the South Shore and on the North Shore.
It is the format that best suits a typical single-family home: enough reserve for a family, a 22 in diameter that slips in beside the boiler and an output that depends directly on the boiler’s capacity.
How an indirect water heater works
The DoubleMax heats water from the boiler: hot water from the boiler circulates through copper piping wound in parallel helicoidal lines inside the tank, then returns to the boiler. It transfers its heat to the potable water without ever mixing with it. When the water in the tank cools, the control calls for heat from the boiler, which feeds the exchanger until the set point is reached. AirGreen installs this tank with an electric boiler, on a zone dedicated to domestic hot water.
Why a double-wall heat exchanger
In an ordinary coil, a single thickness of metal separates the heating water from the water you drink. The DoubleMax uses two: the exchanger’s copper piping is double-wall. This extra barrier is sought after when the heating water contains an additive, such as antifreeze, or when an engineer or inspector requires double separation. Thermo 2000 also states that the copper components meet the low lead requirements for potable plumbing products and the NSF 61 standard.

Reading the output table by boiler capacity
Thermo 2000 publishes the output of the DoubleMax 50-4 according to boiler capacity, for cold water at 40 °F and boiler water at 180 °F. Each value reads in two parts, as first hour / continuous, in US gallons per hour. The first two lines of the table are those closest to a residential electric boiler:
- 50,000 BTU/h (15 kW) boiler: 136 / 86 US gallons for water at 110 °F; 80 / 60 at 140 °F; 69 / 60 at 160 °F.
- 100,000 BTU/h (29 kW) boiler: 222 / 172 US gallons at 110 °F; 140 / 120 at 140 °F; 129 / 120 at 160 °F.
The 110 °F column corresponds to the mixed water coming out of a shower; the 140 °F column to hotter stored water, then brought back to a safe temperature by a mixing valve. The effect of the boiler is clear right away: doubling its capacity clearly increases continuous output, while the tank volume stays the same.
Choosing the electric boiler capacity
An electric boiler is sized first for heating the house. If it must also produce hot water, we check that its capacity gives enough output at peak times and we usually program hot water priority: for a few minutes, the boiler devotes itself to the tank, then returns to the rooms. Thanks to the thermal mass of the radiant floor or radiators, this short detour is rarely felt in the house. The electrical service, the panel capacity and the circuit gauge are part of this check.
Who the DoubleMax 50-4 is for
This model suits a family of three or four with one or two bathrooms, in a home already equipped with an electric boiler. It also suits new construction where radiant floors are planned from the start, or the replacement of an old indirect tank. For a home with a large tub or several simultaneous showers, a larger DoubleMax offers more reserve; we compare the formats during the assessment.
Location and connections
At 59 1/4 in high and 22 in in diameter, the tank fits beside the boiler in most basements. The boiler connection is 1 1/4 in NPT male; the size of the potable water connections is confirmed with the manufacturer’s sheet at the quote stage. The brass ball drain valve makes yearly maintenance easier. The 260 lb weight, plus that of the water, requires a solid, level floor, ideally near a drain.
Manufacturer’s warranty
Thermo 2000 distinguishes residential and commercial use. In residential use, the tank and copper coils are covered by a 15-year warranty. In commercial use, the warranty on the tank and coils is 10 years. Mechanical parts are warranted for 2 years. The terms applicable to your installation are confirmed in writing with the quote.
