THERMO 2000 DOUBLEMAX 80-5 Indirect Water Heater (80 gallons) | Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, South Shore & North Shore
An 80 US gallon indirect water heater for large homes heated by an electric boiler
A large home heated with hot water often has hot water needs to match its size: three bathrooms, a deep tub, sometimes a multigenerational unit on the ground floor. The Thermo 2000 DoubleMax 80-5 indirect water heater relies on the home’s electric boiler to heat an 80 US gallon tank through a 30.9 sq. ft. double-wall copper heat exchanger. AirGreen installs it in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the South Shore and on the North Shore.
For large families and multigenerational homes
The DoubleMax 80-5 comes into its own when several people use hot water at the same hour. In a home where two generations live under one roof, morning showers, the dishwasher and the washing machine add up. A family of five with a large freestanding tub is another typical example. For a more modest home, a smaller tank from the same series is often enough; we make the comparison with you during the visit.
This tank works with an electric boiler already in place or installed at the same time, as part of a radiant floor project or the replacement of an old heating system.

The reserve fills the tub, the boiler handles the rest
Thermo 2000’s values read as first hour / continuous, in US gallons per hour, with cold water at 40 °F and boiler water at 180 °F. The gap between the two figures shows the role of the tank. With a 50,000 BTU/h (15 kW) boiler, the DoubleMax 80-5 delivers 166 / 86 US gallons at 110 °F: the first hour is much more generous than the continuous rate, because the 80 US gallons already hot add to what the boiler produces during that time.
That is exactly what a large tub needs. It fills from the stored water, in a few minutes, without waiting for the boiler. Once the reserve is drawn down, continuous production takes over, then the tank rebuilds while the household sleeps or is at work.
What boiler capacity changes
The same tank produces much more with a stronger boiler. Here are three lines from the manufacturer’s table, at 110 °F, 140 °F and 160 °F (first hour / continuous):
- 50,000 BTU/h (15 kW): 166 / 86 at 110 °F; 92 / 60 at 140 °F; 74 / 60 at 160 °F
- 100,000 BTU/h (29 kW): 252 / 172 at 110 °F; 152 / 120 at 140 °F; 134 / 120 at 160 °F
- 150,000 BTU/h (44 kW): 338 / 258 at 110 °F; 213 / 181 at 140 °F; 194 / 181 at 160 °F
An electric boiler is first sized to heat the house. We start from that capacity to tell you what the DoubleMax 80-5 will really deliver, rather than quoting the most flattering line of the table. If a gap remains between your needs and the expected output, we discuss it before ordering.
A double-wall copper heat exchanger
The DoubleMax exchanger is made of double-wall copper pipes, wound in parallel helicoidal lines. Two thicknesses of metal separate the boiler water from the potable water. This design is valued when the heating water contains an additive such as antifreeze, or when the inspection requires double separation. The copper components meet the NSF 61 standard and the low lead requirements for potable water.
A tall tank: check the free height
The DoubleMax 80-5 is 73 3/4 in high and 24 in in diameter. It is a slender format that takes little floor space but requires enough free height under the joists, ducts and piping, not forgetting the space needed above for the fittings. We measure the mechanical room or basement before confirming the model. The tank weighs 355 lb, plus the weight of the water: it must sit on a solid, level floor, near a drain.
Controls, priority and temperature
The tank control is connected to the electric boiler, usually with hot water priority. The boiler connection is 1 1/2 in NPT male; the size of the potable water connections is confirmed with the manufacturer’s sheet at the quote stage. If you choose to store water at 140 °F or more, a thermostatic mixing valve brings the water delivered to the taps back to a safe temperature. According to Thermo 2000, the 15 gpm maximum flow must be reduced for high-temperature and continuous-flow applications; we take this into account when choosing the piping.
Manufacturer’s warranty
In residential use, Thermo 2000 provides a 15-year warranty on the tank and copper coils. In commercial use, this warranty is 10 years. Mechanical parts are warranted for 2 years. The applicable terms are confirmed in writing with the quote.
