In a café, a daycare, a clinic or a small new building heated by an electric boiler, hot water must circulate through a longer and busier network than in a home. The Thermo 2000 TurboMax 80-5A indirect water heater combines an 80 US gallon tank, a 32.7 sq. ft. copper coil system and 2 in male sweat potable water connections, suited to larger-diameter distribution. What 2 in connections change

The diameter of the potable water connections determines that of the piping leaving the tank. With 2 in connections, the TurboMax 80-5A connects directly to a commercial distribution of good diameter, without a reduction at the outlet. In a building where several sinks, a dishwasher and hand basins are supplied at the same time, properly sized piping limits pressure losses and temperature swings at the tap. The model’s maximum domestic hot water flow is 15 gpm; we design the network around that value and the fixtures to be served.

Restaurants, cafés and daycares

The consumption profile of a small business has nothing in common with that of a home. In a café, the pot sink and dishwasher run continuously at busy times. In a daycare, handwashing, dishes and cleaning are spread over the whole day, with peaks at lunch. In a clinic, the hand basins run from morning to night. The TurboMax 80-5A meets these profiles with an 80 US gallon reserve that absorbs the peaks and an exchanger that keeps production going as long as the electric boiler supplies the necessary heat.

Higher temperatures and user safety

Several commercial uses require hotter water than a shower. Thermo 2000’s table shows, for water at 140 °F, 581 US GPH in the first hour and 549 US GPH continuous; at 160 °F, 316 US GPH and 302 US GPH. The manufacturer specifies that these values must be reduced for high-temperature and continuous-flow applications. When water is produced at a high temperature, a thermostatic mixing valve brings the water delivered to hand basins and washrooms back to a safe temperature, which matters especially in a daycare.

Real output with an electric boiler

The published flows assume that the boiler supplies the exchanger’s maximum exchange capacity, up to 645,000 BTU/h (189 kW) for water at 110 °F. With an electric boiler, the available capacity depends on the building’s electrical service, and it is that capacity that sets the real continuous output. We establish this capacity from the start, then tell you the expected output. If a gap remains with your needs, we discuss it before ordering rather than after commissioning.

New construction: planning the mechanical room

In a new project, the best time to plan hot water is at the drawing stage. The TurboMax 80-5A is 74 3/4 in high and 24 in in diameter and weighs 317 lb empty. You need enough free height, taking the top fittings into account, a floor able to carry the filled tank, a nearby drain and clear access for service. The boiler connection is 1 1/2 in NPT male. The tank drain valve, supplied as standard, makes yearly maintenance easier.

Planned maintenance in a commercial setting

In a business, a hot water outage is costly: a kitchen cannot open, a daycare has to make other arrangements. We recommend a yearly visit scheduled outside opening hours. It includes a test of the relief valve, a check of the circulator, the control and the mixing valve, an inspection of the fittings and a partial draining through the tank drain valve when the water carries sediment.
