The SENVILLE SENA R454B | 18000 BTU Ceiling Cassette Air Conditioner meets a very different need from that of a traditional wall-mounted heat pump. Here, the indoor unit does not occupy a large section of wall: it is integrated into the ceiling, which can be particularly advantageous in an open-concept area, a commercial space, an office, a renovated condo, or a home where the architecture leaves little available wall space.

The cassette allows the air-distribution source to be placed closer to the center of the space rather than blowing exclusively from a peripheral wall. The exact match covered by this specification consists of the SENA-18HF-OG outdoor unit and the SENA-18HF-ICG indoor cassette, under reference AHRI 215735306. Current certification data confirm a cold-climate ENERGY STAR unit operating with R454B, with a SEER2 of 20, an EER2 of 12.5, and an HSPF2 of 12.3.
One essential clarification: “18,000 BTU” is the commercial class, but the AHRI capacity is different
This is probably the most useful information to understand before comparing this product with other heat pumps.
The system is marketed in the 18,000 BTU category, but Senville’s detailed technical specifications indicate a certified cooling capacity of 16,000 BTU/h and a rated heating capacity of 19,000 BTU/h. The published modulation range is 7,000 to 18,500 BTU/h in cooling and 8,700 to 20,000 BTU/h in heating.
Senville’s current official page lists exactly these values.
This difference is not unusual in HVAC. A commercial designation of 18,000 BTU may refer to an equipment family whose certified capacity under a specific match is slightly different.
At AirGreen, when we size a project or compare two units, we therefore use the AHRI capacity of the exact match, rather than relying solely on the number shown in the product title.

The electrical specifications require clarification: the manufacturer's documentation indicates MCA 19 A and maximum protection 20 A. This detailed technical data is what we use to plan the electrical circuit.
20 SEER2: high efficiency without chasing a spectacular number at the expense of the project
With a SEER2 of 20, this Senville cassette falls into a very attractive efficiency category for a ceiling-recessed system.
The ENERGY STAR certification also confirms the cold-climate designation of the exact matched system, with a capacity of 16,000 BTU for cooling and 19,000 BTU for heating.
At AirGreen, however, we avoid presenting SEER2 as guaranteed dollar savings.
Actual performance depends in part on insulation, operating hours, desired temperature, solar exposure, ceiling height, air infiltration, and sizing.
A highly efficient cassette installed in a space that is too small may run shorter cycles than desired. Conversely, a properly sized unit can make better use of its Inverter technology by modulating rather than constantly switching between full capacity and complete shutdown.
A ceiling cassette is primarily an air distribution solution
The real difference from a wall-mounted unit is not purely aesthetic.
A wall-mounted unit blows from one side of the room. In a large open area, we therefore need to find a wall that allows the air to travel a sufficient distance.
A ceiling cassette can be placed much closer to the center of the occupied area. This is particularly useful in an open-plan living room and kitchen, a retail space, a meeting room, or an area with several glass façades.
This positioning allows airflow to be distributed from a central point instead of relying on a single wall.
This Senville's airflow ranges from approximately 194 CFM at low speed to 447 CFM in High/Turbo mode, depending on the settings.
A good ceiling position can therefore be more important than an arbitrary increase in capacity.
27.5 dB(A) at low speed: a cassette can remain very quiet
The published indoor sound level goes down to approximately 27.5 dB(A). At higher speeds, the levels gradually rise to 41, 44.5, and then 48 dB(A).
In an office or residential area, this modulation is useful: the system does not need to operate at maximum speed continuously when the load is low.
The outdoor unit is listed at approximately 57.5 dB(A).
As always, the perceived noise level also depends on the installation. An outdoor unit poorly positioned against a resonant structure can transmit more vibration than a properly supported unit.
Heating down to -30 °C: what the numbers really say
Senville advertises heating operation down to -30 °C, as confirmed by the official brochure.
This specification is interesting, but it should never be interpreted as “19,000 BTUs available down to -30 °C.”
At approximately -8 °C, the combination delivers approximately 14,900 BTU/h.
At -15 °C, certification data indicate approximately 17,000 BTU/h, with a COP of around 1.9.
At -30 °C, the AirGreen product information sheet indicates a maximum capacity of approximately 8,100 BTU/h.
This is precisely why we always refer to the capacity curve, rather than simply the minimum temperature.
A heat pump can still operate at -30 °C while requiring a supplemental heat source if the building's heat loss exceeds the BTUs it can deliver.
Heating capacity can be greater than cooling capacity
This model clearly illustrates a reality that is often misunderstood.
Its certified cooling capacity is 16,000 BTU/h, while its rated heating capacity reaches 19,000 BTU/h.
For Quebec, this distinction is particularly relevant, as heating often represents a significant portion of annual energy use.
A homeowner comparing two systems solely on their cooling capacity may therefore overlook an important part of the analysis.
Dehumidification: approximately 4.23 pints of water per hour
Senville indicates a moisture removal capacity of 2 liters per hour, or approximately 4.23 pints/h.
During the very humid periods of July and August in Montréal, this dehumidification work directly contributes to comfort.
A room at 23 °C with high humidity can feel much less comfortable than a room at the same temperature with better humidity control.
This is also why we avoid unnecessarily oversizing heat pumps. A unit that reaches its temperature setpoint too quickly may reduce the length of the cycles needed to remove humidity.
A SENVILLE cassette requires different installation planning than a wall-mounted unit
The first challenge is not the refrigerant: it is the ceiling
A cassette measuring 22.44 × 22.44 × 9.65 in must be integrated into the available space above the ceiling.
We therefore need to check before the work begins:
the structure, joists, available depth, existing ducts, electrical wires, plumbing, access for maintenance, and the drain route.
A wall-mounted unit can often be installed without opening a large section of the ceiling. A cassette requires much more precise coordination with the building structure.
That is why a photo of the room is not always enough to confirm feasibility.
Our AirGreen experience in Outremont: a few inches can change the project
During an AirGreen installation of an 18,000 BTU ceiling cassette in Outremont, we had to work in a restricted attic space. The main challenge was not the heat pump’s capacity, but the mechanical integration of the unit, routing 1/4 in – 1/2 in piping, and managing condensate drainage.
This project involved a GREE cassette, not this Senville unit. Nevertheless, the experience remains directly applicable to planning: a ceiling cassette must be selected based on the concealed space above the ceiling as much as on the BTUs required for the room.
In 2026, we also completed an installation in Ahuntsic-Cartierville where the cassette had to be perfectly aligned in an open living area, between the existing architectural elements. Visual integration was just as important as HVAC performance.
Drainage must be planned before closing the ceiling
A cassette produces water in cooling mode.
With dehumidification capacity of up to approximately 2 L/h, drainage should not be considered a secondary detail.
We plan the drain based on the possible slope, the water destination, future access, and the system requirements.
A drainage error on a wall-mounted unit is already problematic. On a ceiling-recessed cassette, it can cause much more costly damage to the finishes.
This is one of the reasons why we pay particular attention to drainage before the ceiling is closed.
R454B: evacuation, leak-tightness, and suitable tools
The Senville uses 55.38 oz of R454B and is precharged for a length of up to 25 ft.
Senville specifies that an installation with a 50 ft kit requires the installer to adjust the charge and that a professional installation is required to maintain the warranty and performance.
R454B belongs to the A2L category. We therefore use procedures and equipment suited to refrigerant handling, leak testing, evacuation, and commissioning.
A cassette also has a finished ceiling above it, behind which several connections may become less accessible after the work is completed. We therefore want these connections to be properly made from the outset.
1/4 in – 1/2 in piping: a particularly important detail in renovations
The SENA-18HF-OG / SENA-18HF-ICG configuration uses 1/4 in – 1/2 in piping.
In new construction, we can plan their route relatively freely.
In a renovation in Montréal or Longueuil, the lines may sometimes need to pass between joists, behind a soffit, or through an existing finished wall.
We therefore assess not only the shortest distance, but especially the route that allows for a clean installation, adequate drainage, and reasonable service access.
The electrical circuit: information to correct before installation
The manufacturer’s technical data sheet clearly states:
MCA: 19 A
and
Maximum protection: 20 A.
This point is important because reversing these values in a commercial product sheet can create confusion.
For the actual installation, we rely on the manufacturer’s technical documentation and the nameplate on the equipment delivered.
Wi-Fi: to be treated as an option, not as a guaranteed native feature
The AirGreen product sheet indicates Wi-Fi optional.
The Senville documentation provided with this cassette mentions a wireless remote control but does not present Wi-Fi as a standard included component.
The current ENERGY STAR database also indicates that connected capability is not native to this pairing.
We therefore present Wi-Fi control as an option to be confirmed based on the accessory or controller selected, rather than implying that it is automatically integrated.
LogisVert: why this cassette qualifies for $1,788
The heating capacity used for the calculation at -8 °C is 14,900 BTU/h.
Hydro-Québec currently offers $120 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8 °C for an ENERGY STAR-certified cold-climate heat pump when all LogisVert program conditions are met.
The calculation is therefore simple:
14.9 × $120 = $1,788
This is the $1,788 LogisVert rebate associated with this configuration.
The older Hydro-Québec lists specifically identify AHRI 215735306, SENA-18HF-OG + SENA-18HF-ICG, with a capacity of 14,900 BTU/h at -8 °C and an amount of $1,788 under the $120/$1,000 BTU schedule.
Hydro-Québec nevertheless specifies that the amount and eligibility are determined according to the installation date. We therefore always verify the conditions in effect when preparing the project.
Warranty: the manufacturer’s brochure and AirGreen coverage must be distinguished
The Senville brochure currently indicates 10 years on the compressor and 5 years on parts.
The AirGreen product page associated with the product, for its part, presents 10-10-0, with an additional warranty possible.
These two data points are not identical.
The warranty that actually applies must therefore be clearly specified on the final AirGreen quote, according to the manufacturer’s program, registration conditions, and any additional coverage offered to the customer.
We prefer to clarify this difference before purchase rather than leave an ambiguity in a warranty file several years after installation.
Mistakes we aim to avoid with a ceiling cassette
The first mistake is choosing a cassette based solely on its appearance. If the space between the ceiling and the structure does not allow for proper installation, the project becomes unnecessarily complex.
The second is placing the cassette exactly at the geometric center of the room without checking the structure. The best visual location is not always the best mechanical location.
The third is neglecting the drain. A concealed cassette must be able to reliably drain its condensate.
The fourth is oversizing the system. An 18,000 BTU cassette is not automatically preferable to a 12,000 BTU model simply because the room is large.
The fifth is confusing the 18,000 BTU commercially advertised capacity with the 16,000 BTU of certified cooling capacity for this combination. For sizing, we work with the actual technical data.
What type of project do we especially recommend this SENVILLE for?
This cassette can be particularly suitable for a large open area where the walls are occupied by windows, cabinets, or architectural features.
We also consider it for certain businesses, offices, and spaces where a wall-mounted unit would be visually obtrusive.
During a full renovation, it can be installed while the ceiling is already open, which greatly facilitates routing the lines, drainage, and electrical wiring.
It is less suitable when the space above the ceiling is inaccessible or when future maintenance would require removing a large amount of finishing.
