The 90° oval vertical elbow changes the direction of an oval duct in the vertical plane: it takes the duct from horizontal to vertical, or the other way around. Both ends are oval, the same size as the duct, in 5 or 6 in.

The bottom and top of a riser in a wall

A riser to the upper floor often starts in the basement, between the joists, then enters a wall cavity. At the bottom of the riser, the duct has to turn upward; at the top, it often has to go back to horizontal between the joists of the upper floor. The vertical elbow makes both turns without leaving the oval format, where a round elbow would take up too much room.

Choosing the right oval elbow

  • 90° vertical elbow: to go up or down at a right angle
  • 45° vertical elbow: for an angled offset in the same vertical plane
  • Flat elbow: to turn while staying in the same plane, for example in a ceiling
  • Oval-to-round elbow: when the duct has to turn and become round at the same spot

Installation

Dry-fit the elbow in the cavity before cutting the plate or the subfloor, to check the clearance. Screw both joints and seal them with aluminum tape or mastic; once the wall is closed, the joints are no longer accessible.

01 · What it is for

The turn that starts the riser

At the bottom of a wall, the oval duct arrives horizontally and has to rise: the vertical elbow makes that turn without leaving the oval format.

  • Bottom of a riser inside a wall cavity
  • Top of a riser, to run horizontally between the upper-floor joists
  • Going from a ceiling into a wall in tight spaces
  • Forced-air and air exchanger systems in oval duct
Vertical turnIt takes the duct from horizontal to vertical, or the reverse.
Oval all the wayBoth ends are oval: no change to round at this point.

Frequently asked questions

Vertical or flat elbow?

The vertical elbow makes the duct rise or drop. The flat elbow changes direction while staying in the same plane, in a ceiling for example.

Should I use an oval-to-round elbow instead?

If the duct must turn round right after the bend, the oval-to-round elbow does both at once. Otherwise, the vertical elbow keeps the oval format.

Which sizes are available?

5 and 6 in, for oval duct of the same size.

Can you install it?

Yes. We build oval-duct risers to upper floors across Greater Montréal.
