Of the four X Series models, the X24ERV is the only one with a counterflow core, larger (14.25 in) than the X30ERV's (12 in, crossflow). Its sheet lists 83% sensible recovery at 0 °C, versus 75% for the X30ERV.

Per its defrost table, the X24ERV runs no defrost cycle above −10 °C, while the X24HRV starts at −5 °C. Between −5 and −10 °C, ventilation therefore carries on without defrost interruptions.
65%What it still recovers at −25 °C
The only efficiency figure that matters for a Québec winter, and the one the Code uses. An efficiency quoted without its temperature means nothing; this one is measured at a test airflow of 64 cfm.
DamperIt defrosts without depressurizing the house
In cold weather, a motorized damper closes the outdoor air intake and recirculates indoor air through the core to thaw it. The house doesn't go into negative pressure during the cycle: no cold air drawn in through leaks, and none of the imbalance manufacturers warn about when there's a fireplace or a combustion appliance.
ERVIt moves moisture too, not just heat
An ERV transfers some moisture between the two airstreams. Useful in a house that gets too dry in winter or takes on a lot of humidity in summer. The trade-off: it generally recovers less heat than a comparable HRV.
