Quick facts
Armacell’s Armaflex elastomeric tube insulation slides over copper piping and forms a continuous sleeve around the line. Its closed-cell foam keeps humid air from reaching the cold metal: no condensation dripping into a ceiling, and less heat lost between the outdoor unit and the indoor unit.
Insulating a refrigerant line along its full length
We use it on suction lines and, when needed, on the liquid lines of wall-mounted, central and multi-zone heat pumps. The 6 ft lengths are easy to handle in a wall, a ceiling or a service chase, and are also used to replace insulation that has been crushed or dried out by the sun.
Twelve diameters, three wall thicknesses
- 3/8 in wall: 1/4 in to 2-5/8 in pipe.
- 1/2 in wall: 3/8 in to 3-1/8 in pipe.
- 3/4 in wall: 3/8 in to 2-1/8 in pipe.
The colder the line and the more humid the location, the thicker the wall should be. Each combination has its own AirGreen code and Armacell part number, shown when you select it.
Installation tips
Slide the insulation on without stretching it, glue the butt joints with Armaflex 520 adhesive and close exposed joints with Armaflex foam tape. Keep the insulation away from the flame during brazing. Outdoors, the foam must be protected from the sun with a suitable covering.

What to know before installing
- Pick the size of the pipe to insulate first, then the wall thickness.
- Do not stretch the insulation to make it longer: it thins out and the joints open over time.
- Glue butt joints with Armaflex 520 adhesive to keep humid air out.
- Keep the insulation away from the flame while brazing.
- Outdoors, protect the foam from sunlight with a suitable finish.

Frequently asked questions
Which wall thickness should I choose?
The colder the line and the more humid the space, the thicker the wall. A 3/8 in wall suits many residential lines; 1/2 and 3/4 in walls are for humid or unheated spaces and colder suction lines.
Does the liquid line need insulation?
The suction line (the larger one) always does. On a heat pump the liquid line is often insulated too, since it runs hot or cold depending on the mode. Follow the equipment installation manual.
How do I join two lengths?
Butt the ends together without stretching them and glue them with Armaflex 520 adhesive. On an exposed joint, add Armaflex foam tape.
Can you install it?
Yes. Our technicians insulate the refrigerant lines on every heat pump installation, everywhere in Greater Montréal.
