Quick facts
This 20 kA surge protector for HVAC equipment is installed on the electrical circuit of a heat pump or air conditioner, most often at the outdoor disconnect, right next to the unit. It limits voltage spikes coming in through the power supply before they reach the unit's circuit board.
Why protect a heat pump against surges
Variable-speed (inverter) heat pumps are run by circuit boards. A storm, a power outage or a switching operation on the grid can send a voltage spike that damages this board or the compressor module. Replacing a board puts the unit out of service, sometimes in the middle of winter. A surge protector installed at the unit reduces this risk, in addition to whole-house protection at the electrical panel.
Where and how it is installed
- On the unit's circuit, usually at the outdoor disconnect.
- Connected by qualified personnel, in accordance with the Québec Electrical Code.
- Surge protector voltage chosen to match the unit's voltage.
What it does not do
A surge protector limits transient overvoltages; it does not protect against a direct lightning strike or against poor grounding. Before installation, we check the voltage, the circuit and the model of your unit.

Protecting a heat pump’s electronics
Variable-speed heat pumps rely on control boards that are sensitive to voltage spikes.
- Outdoor units of wall-mount, central and multi-zone heat pumps
- Central air conditioners
- After replacing a control board already damaged by a surge
- Areas with frequent outages and storms
