01 · Your room

Is it the right size for this room?

Amana doesn't publish a room size for this unit. From its 8,700 BTU/h of cooling, we estimate ≈ 120 to 185 sq ft. Choose your room's area.

It's the right size.

For a 130 to 175 sq ft room, this is the range we estimate for this unit: 8,700 BTU/h of cooling, 7,800 BTU/h of heat-pump heating and a heater of up to 5,000 W when the cold calls for it.

AirGreen estimate: Amana publishes no room size, so we apply the application ranges Trane publishes for its PTACs of the same cooling capacity. Our estimator confirms the exact area on site.

Typical 153 sq ft room with one exterior wall, in Montréal: 1,089 kWh of heat per winter (Environment Canada 1991–2020 climate normals). The heat pump is counted only at 8 °C and warmer, where Amana rates its output; below that, the heater, at the price of a baseboard. If it keeps heating in colder weather, the bill goes down.

≈ $128 for the year, before tax. Winter is 88% of it. If your home stays in the first tier of Rate D in summer (7.065 ¢/kWh), cooling drops to $9.92.

03 · Good to know

What you should know about this one

Published, verifiable facts, not brochure claims.

8,700What it really delivers in cooling

The name says 9,000 BTU: that's the unit's size class. Amana publishes 8,700 BTU/h at 230 V and at 208 V, the supply in many buildings: the capacity doesn't drop.

5,000 WThe heater that takes over

At Amana, the two digits after the series letter (the ** in PMH093J**AXXX) set the heater when ordering: 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 or 5.0 kW at 230 V, 1.3 to 4.1 kW at 208 V. At 5.0 kW it takes a 6-30P plug on 30 A; at 3.5 kW, a 6-20P on 20 A. It heats when the heat pump can no longer keep up.

25-35The fresh air it brings in

The PMH is Amana's DigiAIR heat pump: a make-up air module brings in 25 to 35 cfm of outside air, depending on building pressure. That's what sets it apart from the PTH.

3.6The COP published at 8 °C

Amana publishes a heat-pump COP of 3.6: 7,800 BTU/h of heat at 230 V. Each kWh you pay for gives back 3.6 in heat, against 1 for the heater or a baseboard.

−7 °CWhen the heat pump hands over

Amana switches the unit from heat pump to the heater when the coil drops below 20 °F (−7 °C), or when the heat pump can't keep up on a two-stage thermostat.

7⅝ inHow far it sticks into the room

Amana quotes a 7⅝ in deep front, one of the slimmest in the industry: the unit takes less space out of the room.

4 °CRoom freeze protection

As soon as the unit senses 40 °F (4 °C) or below, it starts the fan and the heater: an empty room won't freeze in winter.

6-30PThe outlet it needs

With the 5.0 kW heater: a NEMA 6-30P plug on a dedicated 30 A circuit. With 3.5 kW: 6-20P on 20 A. With 2.5 kW: 6-15P on 15 A. In a replacement, the outlet already in the wall dictates the heater size.

Replacement

It fits the standard 42 × 16 in sleeve

Amana sleeves have the industry-standard dimensions: 42 in wide, 16 ¹⁄₁₆ in high, 14 ⅛ in deep. Our estimator checks the sleeve and the grille in place before ordering.
