Quick facts
The galvanized tee fitting takes a 90° branch off a round duct. It is the most compact branch fitting: where a wye would need length, the tee comes straight out the side.
The branch takeoff for tight spaces
In a ceiling cavity, between two joists or along a foundation wall, there is often no room for an angled fitting. The tee lets you feed an outlet very close to the duct, or run an air exchanger branch to a room without a detour. It is also used to prepare for a future connection: its outlet is closed with a round cap until the day the branch is installed.
Six diameters
Available in 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 in, based on the nominal diameter of the duct being connected.
Tee or wye: how to choose
- Tee fitting: the shortest, for narrow spaces and outlets close together.
- Wye fitting: the branch comes off at an angle and the air turns more gently; the better choice when space allows, especially for joining two exhaust runs.
Installation
Screw all three joints and seal them with aluminum tape or mastic. Support the fitting and its branches so the weight of the ducts does not strain the joints.

A branch where a wye won’t fit
Between two joists or against a wall there is often no room for a wye: the tee takes the branch straight off the side.
- Branch take-off on a round duct in a tight space
- Branch to an outlet located right next to the duct

What to know before installing
- The size is the nominal round duct diameter.
- A 90° take-off slows the air more than a wye: keep the tee for places where a wye won’t fit.
- Close an unused outlet with a round cap of the same diameter, screwed and sealed.
- Screw and seal all three joints with foil tape or mastic.

Frequently asked questions
When should I pick a tee over a wye?
When space is tight or the outlet sits right next to the duct. Elsewhere, a wye turns the air more gently.
Can I prepare a branch for later?
Yes. Install the tee now and close its outlet with a round cap of the same diameter, well sealed, until the branch is connected.
Is a tee used for exhaust?
It can join two ducts, but for exhaust a wye is better: the two flows merge with less turbulence.
Can you install it?
Yes. We install ventilation and forced-air ducts across Greater Montréal.
