Quick facts
The galvanized centred Y fitting splits a round duct into two branches that spread out evenly on either side of the axis. Unlike a regular Y, no duct continues straight through: the air is split between two branches at the same angle.
The right choice for supplying two neighbouring rooms
When one branch has to serve two bedrooms side by side, or two outlets on either side of a wall, the centred Y gives both sides an equal starting point. It is also a useful part in an air exchanger network, where you want a similar fresh air supply in each bedroom.
Three diameters
Offered in 5, 6 and 8 in. The size is the nominal diameter of the round duct to be connected; measure the existing duct before ordering.
For a truly even split
- Give both branches a similar length and number of elbows.
- Install a round damper on each branch to correct any imbalance.
- Screw the three joints and seal them with aluminum tape or mastic.
- Insulate branches that run through an unheated space.
It can also be used the other way around, to join two ducts symmetrically ahead of a fan.
Installed by AirGreen across Greater Montréal
We install and balance ventilation and forced-air networks in Montréal, Laval, Longueuil, the South Shore and the North Shore. RBQ licence 5645-9605-01, subcategory 15.8 Ventilation. For availability or a quote, call us at 514 316-2973 or email sales@airgreen.ca with the diameter and quantity.
Two branches treated equally
Neither branch is on the axis: the air divides between them in a similar way, which makes balancing easier.
- Feeding two neighbouring rooms from one branch
- A duct end that splits toward two outlets on either side
- Air exchanger distribution to two bedrooms
- Joining two ducts symmetrically toward a fan

What to know before installing
- The size is the nominal round duct diameter.
- Keep the two branches similar in length if you want similar airflow in each room.
- A damper on each branch lets you fine-tune the split.

Frequently asked questions
How is it different from a regular wye?
In a regular wye, the duct continues straight and a single branch leaves at an angle. The centred wye splits the duct into two branches that move away from the axis equally.
Will both rooms get the same airflow?
The centred wye starts them on an equal footing, but each branch’s length and number of elbows also count. A damper per branch lets you fine-tune.
Which diameters are available?
5, 6 and 8 in.
Can you install it?
Yes. We install and balance duct systems across Greater Montréal.
