Quick facts
The universal oval-to-round fitting joins an oval duct to a round duct on the same axis. It does not turn the air: it only changes the shape of the duct. It is the basic transition fitting in the oval family, available in 5 and 6 in.
Going from oval to round where there is room
Oval duct only makes sense in tight spaces. As soon as the duct leaves the wall or ceiling cavity, it is simpler to go back to round: fittings, dampers and equipment are almost all round. The universal fitting makes that switch in a straight line, for example under a wall’s bottom plate, in a basement or at the inlet of an air exchanger.
Choosing the right transition
- Universal fitting: straight transition, for most cases.
- Extended fitting: straight transition with a longer body, depending on the space available.
- 90° oval-to-round elbow: when you also need to turn at the same spot.
Installation
Pick the size of your oval duct; the round side takes the matching round duct. Screw both joints and seal them with aluminum tape or mastic. If you want to adjust the branch’s airflow, install a round damper on the round duct that follows, in a spot that will stay accessible.

Changing shape without changing direction
The duct comes out of the wall and carries straight on, but round: the universal transition makes that change without a turn.
