A 200 US gallon tank in ASME configuration for buildings that use a lot of hot water

Some buildings cannot afford to run out of hot water, even for a few minutes. A seniors’ residence during morning care, a sports centre whose showers fill up after every game, a commercial laundry or a hotel in high season. For these uses, the Bradford White M3ST200R5A hot water storage tank offers a reserve of 200 US gallons (167 imperial gallons, or 751 L) and includes the ASME configuration. AirGreen installs it in commercial and institutional buildings in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on the South Shore and on the North Shore.

Like any storage tank, the M3ST200R5A does not heat water. It holds the water produced by commercial electric water heaters or by an electric boiler, and makes it available when demand exceeds what these units produce at that moment.

What the ASME configuration changes

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) code governs the design and construction of pressure vessels. In Bradford White’s storage tank series, ASME construction is offered as an option, and the M3ST200R5A is precisely the version that includes it. In many projects, the engineer, the insurer or the building manager requires a tank built to this code above a certain volume; choosing the ASME version from the outset avoids reordering at the last minute. We confirm this requirement with you from the assessment stage.

Buildings where this volume makes sense

A 200 US gallon reserve is justified when demand arrives in very sharp waves. In a seniors’ residence, baths and care are concentrated in the morning. In an arena or a fitness centre, all the showers run at the same time for twenty minutes, then nothing. A commercial laundry fills several washers at once. A small hotel or inn sees its guests shower at the same hour before checkout.

In a medium-sized residential building, this volume is sometimes larger than needed; a smaller tank from the same series may be enough. It is the analysis of your peaks that decides, not the size of the building.

A volume that changes the system design

With large storage, hot water production can be spread over long hours rather than concentrated at the peak. In practice, this often makes it possible to use electric water heaters or an electric boiler of reasonable wattage relative to the building’s electrical service, while still delivering the peak without a temperature drop. A circulating pump, controlled by a thermostat on the tank, handles the exchange between the heating units and the reserve. A thermostatic mixing valve at the outlet keeps the stored water hot while delivering a safe temperature to showers and sinks.

Planning the delivery of a 633 lb tank

The M3ST200R5A weighs 633 lb empty. Once filled, the load on the floor becomes considerable, and the slab must be able to carry it. Its 32 in diameter does not fit through every door, and its 77 in height requires checking the free height under the pipes and ducts of the mechanical room. We plan the delivery route, the handling equipment and the final position before ordering, taking into account the service space around the fittings and the drain valve.

Tank construction and protection

The inside is lined with Vitraglas with Microban and protected by two anode rods. On a tank this tall, two anodes spread the protection better than one. 2 in of CFC-free foam covers the sides and top, and Bradford White states that its storage tanks meet or exceed the ASHRAE 90.1b standard.

2 1/2 in connections and working pressure

The 2 1/2 in (64 mm) NPT water connections allow high flow rates to the building’s distribution system. The working pressure is 150 psi (1,034 kPa). We check the supply pressure, install a pressure-reducing valve when needed, and select a relief valve suited to the volume and configuration of the tank. A thermal expansion tank sized for the system completes the installation.

Maintaining a large tank

One visit per year is a minimum for a tank of this volume: flushing sediment through the low-restriction brass valve, testing the relief valve, checking the fittings and the pump controls, and inspecting the anodes at regular intervals. In a building where hot water is essential, we schedule these visits outside peak hours.

Manufacturer’s warranty

Bradford White provides a 5-year limited tank warranty and a 1-year limited parts warranty.

Installation of the Bradford White M3ST200R5A tank by AirGreen

AirGreen is a family business established in Montreal and active in heating, ventilation and air conditioning for more than fifteen years. Our RBQ licence 5645-9605-01 covers ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work. For a tank of this size, our work includes:

  • analysis of consumption peaks and of the electric heating units in place;
  • confirmation of the ASME requirement and of the floor’s load capacity;
  • planning of delivery, handling and positioning;
  • removal of old tanks or the equipment being replaced;
  • 2 1/2 in water connections, the circulation loop and isolation valves;
  • the relief valve, its discharge pipe, the expansion tank and the thermostatic mixing valve;
  • the electrical connection of the pump and its control, commissioning and a yearly maintenance plan.

We work with property managers, institutions and businesses in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, Brossard, Boucherville, Saint-Eustache, Terrebonne, Mascouche and across the South Shore and the North Shore. The on-site estimate is free, the quote is written and financing is available.
